Abstract

Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) is a food seasoning that is widely used. Consumption of MSG in excessive doses can cause an excess of free radicals in the body that trigger oxidative stress and finally affect the reproductive system hormones. These free radicals can be suppressed by administration of antioxidants. Rhizomes of Curcuma xanthorrhiza extracts containantioxidants and they are widely grown. Theyare used as traditional medicine in Indonesia. This experiment was conducted to investigatewhether rhizomes of Curcuma xanthorrhiza extracts areable to inhibit decreasing endometrial thickness in female mice after receiving orally MSG-treatment.This research adoptedtrue experimental posttest only control group design. It includes 25 mice that were divided into 5 groups: control K1 (CMC) and K2 (MSG), treatment group (MSG and rhizomes of Curcuma xanthorrhiza extracts with dose of 0,4 mg/gBW, 0,8 mg/gBW, 1,2 mg/gBW).In addition, the mice’s endometrium were removed to be subsequently stained using Hematoxillin-Eosin. Thickening of uterus was observed and measured with 40x magnitude using Microphoto Microscope Olympus. Data was analized using One Way ANOVA. The research finally comes with a result showing that there were not any significant differences discovered from the endometrium thickening from the five tested groups (p0,05). Therefore, it is implied that rhizomes of Curcuma xanthorrhiza extracts has no effect on endometrial thickness of uterus by oral MSG-treatment. Keywords: MSG, curcuma, endometrium

Abstract

Telah dilakukan sintesis senyawa 2,3-dibromo propanol menggunakan bahan awal gliserol hasil isolasi produk samping pembuatan biodiesel. Peningkatan yang cepat dalam produksi biodiesel diperkirakan akan mengakibatkan surplus gliserol. Penggunaan gliserol sebagai bahan awal bertujuan meningkatkan nilai ekonomis dari gliserol itu sendiri. Gliserol dengan  rendemen 88,7 % telah diisolasi dari produk samping pembuatan biodiesel melalui reaksi transesterifikasi trigliserida dalam minyak sawit menggunakan katalis basa KOH. Selanjutnya, gliserol didehidrasi dengan asam format untuk mendapatkan senyawa alil alkohol melalui metode destilasi pada 195-260 0C. Sintesis senyawa 2,3-dibromo propanol dicapai melalui brominasi alil alkohol pada -2-0 0C menggunakan pelarut khloroform. Karakterisasi struktur dilakukan menggunakan spektrometer IR, 1H-NMR, dan GC-MS. Pada penelitian ini, alil alkohol yang diperoleh melalui metode destilasi memiliki rendemen sebesar 44,78 % dan reaksi brominai alil alkohol menghasilkan senyawa  2,3-dibromo propanol dengan rendemen 80,3 % yield. Keywords : senyawa 2,3-dibromo propanol, gliserol, biodiesel

Abstract

The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of carbopol 940, oleic acid and interaction of both in the value of viscosity and release rate and to find optimum formula of diclofenac sodium base gel which can produced viscoisity between 20 dPa.s - 200 dPa.s and rate release 50μg/cm2.menit1/2 - 150μg/cm2.menit1/2 using factorial design 22. The level of carbopol 940 were 1,3% and 0,8% while the level of oleic acid were 5% and 20%. Analysis of the research used Design Expert 10 software.The results showed that carbopol 940 and oleic acid had significant effect in determining the viscosity response and the release rate. The addition of carbopol 940 and oleic acid l increased the viscosity response and the addition of carbopol 940 and oleic acid  decreased the release flux response. There were 100 optimum compositions of combination of carbopol 940 between 0.8% to 1,194% and oleic acid between 5% and 19.95% which can be used to obtain sodium diclofenac base gel preparation with viscosity responses between 76,042 dPa.s -199,570 dPa.s and flux release responses from 101,000 μg/cm2.minute1/2 until 124,250 μg/cm2.minute1/2.

Abstract

Tofu is a type of traditional food that is widely consumed by the community. Tofu is susceptible to damage so manufacturers know often add preservatives such as formaldehyde. Formaldehyde or known as formalin is not included in the list of food additives as they are toxic and harmful to human health. This study aims to determine the decrease in formalin content in tofu using the addition of white turmeric. The method used by spectrophotometry with chromatropic acid as reagent and absorbance is measured at a wavelength of 570 nm. Based on the research results obtained formalin level on tofu before added white turmeric equal to 10.279 ppm. After addition of white turmeric solution with concentration 2.5%; 5% and 7.5%, respectively with soaking for 5 minutes, 10 minutes and 15 minutes obtained the largest decrease of formalin at 7.5% concentration for 15 minutes at 62.8%. From these results it can be concluded that with the addition of white turmeric can reduce formalin in tofu. Keywords : Tofu, Formaldehyde, White Turmeric, Spectrophotometry

Abstract

The usage of Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) as flavour enhancer in food is increasing and has reached alarming condition. Excessive consumption of MSG results in the formation of a number of free radicals in the body and affects the function of hypothalamus. A disturbed hypothalamus results in the decline of estrogen levels, and in turn, this estrogen deficiency causes a decrease in vaginal epithelial proliferation in which epithelial cells become thinner. Giving antioxidants might help to address these problems. One of the plants that is rich in antioxidant and grow in mass in Indonesia is curcuma. This study is aimed at analyzing the effect of giving curcuma extract (Curcuma Xanthorrhiza Roxb.) with varying doses on the thickness of vaginal epithelium in mice that are exposed to MSG. The research design employed in the study is true experimental posttest only control group by using 5 groups, namely: K1 (CMC-Na), K2 (MSG), P1 (MSG + curcuma rhizome extract dose of 0,4mg/gr BW), P2 (MSG + curcuma rhizome extract dose of 0,8mg/gr BW), P3 (MSG + curcuma rhizome extract dose of 1,2mg/gr BW). Vagina of each mouse was taken and studied to measure its epithelial thickness by using a 40x magnification on Olympus micrograph microscope. Data were then analyzed using One Way ANOVA. The results show that there is no significant difference in the thickness of vaginal epithelium in each treatment (ρ-value 0.341). Therefore, it can be concluded that the extract of curcuma rhizome does not have a significant influence on the thickness of vaginal epithelium in mice that are exposed to MSG. Keywords : MSG, Curcuma Xanthorrhiza, epithelium, vagina.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui perbandingan aktivitas antikanker ekstrak etanol bagian akar, daun dan bunga dari tanaman Calotropis gigantea terhadap sel kanker kolon WiDr. Pengujian efek penghambatan pertumbuhan antikanker dilakukan dengan metode MTT. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol bagian akar dan daun  Calotropis gigantea  mempunyai aktivitas antikanker terhadap sel kanker kolon WiDr yang lebih tinggi berturut turut dengan IC50 44.20 μg/ml; 48.50 μg/ml dibanding bagian bunga (IC50 3576 μg/ml) sehingga bagian akar dan daun dapat direkomendasikan untuk uji lebih lanjut dalam pengembangan fitofarmaka.Kata kunci: Calotropis gigantea, WiDr cell line, anti kanker

Abstract

Eel fish (Anguilla marmorata Quoy Gaimard) is one of the strategic commodities to be developed because it has high nutritional value such as protein, fatty acid, vitamins and minerals. Minerals are one of the nutrients the body needs for the body's physiological processes. This study aims to determine the amount and mineral content of eel meat Anguilla marmorata Quoy Gaimard) originating from the river Palu and lake Poso. Sampling was done by Purposive sampling method based on type, weight 35-40 gram, size 300-450 mm and location of taking. Mineral testing on eel meat using laboratory experimental with Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results showed that the mineral content contained in yellow eel fish from Palu river contains potassium 1,519 mg/kg, magnesium 203 mg/kg, zinc 11,2 mg/kg, and mercury 0,129 mg/kg; and from the  Poso lake contains potassium 1,360 mg/kg, magnesium 179 mg/kg, and strontium 1.32 mg/kg. Based on this study  can be concluded that there is influence the location against the amount of mineral content.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the yield, toxicity, and toxic concentration of crude extracts of ethanol, n-hexane fraction extract, ethyl acetate fraction extract and n-butanol fractions extract pare leaf (Momordica charantiaL.) larvae Culex pipiens. The method used to determine the toxicity of extract larvasida test larvae Culex pipiens to obtain the LC99 values obtained using the analysis of Reed and Muench. Extraction and fractionation processis known to yield a ethanol crude extract obtained 8.86%, n-hexane fraction extract of 1%, ethyl acetate fraction extract 1.80% and n-butanol fractions extract of 0.80% and the toxicity obtained test results that pare leaf (Momordica charantia L.) have the potential toxicity larvae larvae of Culex pipiens as indicated by the value by Lethality Concrentation 99 % (LC99) in the crude extract ethanol 7416.52  ppm, n-hexane fraction extract of 2564.48 ppm, ethyl acetate fraction extract 2702.09 ppm and n-butanol fractions extract of 2665.63 ppm. Keywords: Pare leaf (Momordica charantia L.), toxicity, larvae Culex pipiens

Abstract

Monosodium Glutamat activates an axis ablation in arcuate nucleus hypothalamus which happens to possibly initiate malfunctions in Hipothalamic Pituitary Adrenal axis. Yet, it is known that hypothalamus produces Gonadotropin Releasing Hormone which is able to stimulate the secretion of Gonadotropin Follicle Stimulating Hormon and Luteinizing Hormone from the anterior pituitary gland. These two hormones, however, are essentials for the development of gonad and during the cycles of oogenesis. Hence, any malfunctions resided in the human’s hypothalamus can possibly put endocrine gland into troubles, such as reproduction hormones which affect the workings of gonad. Therefore, the extract of Temulawak is promoted to be the attempt to resolve the issue for its antioxidant properties. Temulawak extract contains antioxidant, properties for as much as 87.01 ppm, according to Rosidi research’s result, analyzing the Temulawak’s potentials. The amount of antioxidant found Temulawak extract is categorized as active and applicable as natural antioxidant source. However, this research adopts true experimental post-test only control group design. It includes 5 (five) groups of female mice as which are K1 (CMC), K2 (CMC+MSG), P1 (MSG+0.4 mg Temulawak extract), P2 (MSG+0.8 MG Temulawak extract), P3 (MSG+1.2 mg Temulawak extract). In addition, the mice’s ovaries are removed to be subsequently tested using Hematoxillin-Eosin and the ovaries’ follicles quantity is observed and counted. The data is analyzed using One Way ANOVA. The research finally comes with a result showing that there are not any significant differences discovered from the ovaries’ follicles quantity from the five tested groups (p0.05). Abstract

Kurkumin (diferuloylmethane (C21H20O6) merupakan komponen berwarna kuning–orange yang terkandung dalam tanaman Curcuma longa.  Secara tradisional masyarakat Indonesia  memanfatkan bagian rimpang  tanaman tersebut sebagai salah satu komponen bumbu masakkan sehari-hari dan sebagai komponen jamu dari berbagai kondisi dan penyakit seperti  panas, hepatitis, jerawat, infekasi bakteri, inflamasi, scabies dll. Studi in vivo dan in vitro menunjukkan bahwa kurkumin mempunyai berbagai aktivitas farmakologis  antara lain antiinflamasi, antiviral, antibakteri, antifungal,antikanker, antioksidan, antidiabetes mellitus, antirheumatoid arthritis. Sedangkan studi klinik juga telah banyak dilakukan diantaranya pada kanker pancreas, kanker kolon, kanker payudara, dan multiple myeloma. Pada makalah ini penulis akan membahas tentang etnomedisin kunyit (Curcuma longa), studi pre-klinik baik secara in vitro maupun in vivo, studi klinik pada pasien dan mekanisme kerja senyawa kurkumin sebagai agen kemopreventif dan kemoterapi penyakit kanker. Kata Kunci :Kurkumin.
