Abstract

This qualitative case study investigates the online formative assessment practices and the challenges faced by junior high school English teachers in Banyumas Regency. Utilizing observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis with five purposively selected teachers, the study explores the practical implementation of digital assessment tools in English Language Teaching (ELT) classrooms. Findings reveal that teachers actively utilize interactive platforms like Quizizz, Google Forms, and Wordwall, primarily for quick quizzes and immediate feedback, demonstrating a clear alignment with learning objectives. This approach significantly boosts student motivation and engagement, largely owing to the tools' interactive and gamified features. However, the path to seamless integration is marked by several key hurdles. Prominent challenges include limited student access to suitable devices and reliable internet connectivity, persistent technical issues with platforms and signals, students' initial unfamiliarity with online tools, and significant concerns over phone misuse and academic integrity. Additionally, teachers themselves reported perceived gaps in their experience and digital skills. These insights collectively emphasize the crucial need for enhanced technological infrastructure, tailored professional development for educators, and supportive policy frameworks to effectively realize the full potential of online formative assessment in ELT

Abstract

This study measures the correlation between the Intensive Training Program (ITP) and the English and Arabic Proficiency Test (EAPT) scores among 100 postgraduate students at IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo from four non-language programs. A quantitative method with an ex-post facto design was used, and data analysis was conducted using Spearman’s correlation test. Data were collected through a three-aspect proficiency test: listening (istima’), structure (tarakib), and reading (qira’ah), using a Computer Assisted Test (CAT) application with 140 items. The test results were processed using score conversion and SPSS Version 30. Before the ITP, none of the students achieved the minimum passing score for the EPT (450), and only six passed the APT. After the training, 18% reached the minimum EPT score, and the number of students who passed the APT increased significantly to 32. Correlation analysis showed that ITP effectively improved listening (correlation 0.582; p=0.002) and structure (correlation 0.592; p=0.002) in EPT, but was less effective for reading (correlation 0.085; p=0.686). In contrast, ITP greatly enhanced all aspects of APT: istima’ (correlation 0.972; p=0.000), tarakib (correlation 0.993; p=0.000), and qira’ah (correlation 0.997; p=0.000). The short duration of the training affects its effectiveness, along with students’ educational backgrounds and learning motivation. To enhance efficacy, it is recommended to extend the training duration, provide relevant modules for non-language students, enhance motivation through regular practice, and improve reading instruction methods. ITP positively impacts Arabic and English language proficiency, particularly for APT, suggesting that targeted training can significantly benefit non-language students’ language skills.

Abstract

This study scrutinizes the magical realism in Reyna Grande's The Distance Between Us and Clarissa Goenawan's The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida through the four characteristics of Wendy B. Faris: the irreducible element, the phenomenal world, the unsettling doubt, and the merged nature. This study was under a descriptive qualitative research design to explore the presence and function of magical realism and mystery. The qualitative approach was designated to allow a deeper understanding of how narrative elements contribute to emotional resonance and ambiguity in literary texts. The primary data sources were the two novels under study. Selected narrative passages and dialogues that exhibit characteristics of magical realism and mystery were identified for analysis. The study used content analysis with a thematic analytical framework supported by a comparative literary analysis. Data were scrutinized using Wendy B. Faris’s four characteristics of magical realism. Findings show that in Goenawan's novel, ghost sightings and surreal events build a mysterious atmosphere which challenges the boundaries of reality. While in Grande's work, El Otro Lado is present as an invisible force that is full of mystery, creating doubt and emotional tension. Both works display how magical realism and mystery work together to discover complex inner experiences and jiggle the boundaries between reality and unconscious. Future scholars are encouraged to figure on these findings by discovering how magical realism encounters with trauma theory, identity formation, or diasporic narratives across diverse cultural contexts.

Abstract

In the midst of rapid digital transformation, language education faces the urgent need to redesign curricula that align with technological advancements while ensuring inclusivity. This study aims to investigate how technology facilitates the reconstruction of language curricula in urban Indonesian contexts. Employing a qualitative multi-site case study design, data were collected from 15 language teachers across eight schools in South Jakarta and South Tangerang between August and October 2024 through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis. Thematic analysis revealed three major findings: (1) technological adaptation varied by region, with South Jakarta schools integrating advanced tools such as AI-powered applications, while South Tangerang relied on basic platforms due to infrastructural constraints; (2) pedagogical shifts toward learner-centered approaches were more evident in well-resourced schools, supported by collaborative digital tools; and (3) inclusivity efforts, including smartphone-based activities and bilingual resources, were hindered by socioeconomic disparities and unstable internet access. The study concludes that while technology holds transformative potential for language education, its impact is constrained by resource inequities, highlighting the need for targeted teacher training and equitable infrastructure investment. These findings contribute to the limited Southeast Asian literature on technology-enhanced curriculum design and offer practical implications for policymakers and educators in developing contexts.

Abstract

This study explores intersectional identities in female characters to investigate hidden patriarchy in Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This study aims to explore the intersectional identities of female characters and how they expose the hidden patriarchal structures within the narrative. Using a qualitative descriptive approach with textual analysis applied to selected female characters as primary data, this study used Crenshaw’s intersectional feminist lens to explore how overlapping identities affect equality in society. The findings of this study uncover the female characters only function as supporters, enforcers, or extensions of male authority. It highlights that the female characters experience overlapping oppression and are positioned in a male-dominated hierarchy. The conclusion of this study proves that the existence of hidden patriarchy in the narrative is revealed through the lens of intersectionality which clarifies gender-based boundaries. It is recommended that further discussions and critical analyses be conducted to challenge patriarchal narratives in popular literature, as literary representations continue to reflect and reinforce societal norms.

Abstract

The Indonesian government has introduced a deep learning approach based on three principles: mindful, meaningful, and joyful learning. This approach is considered essential to address learning challenges by ensuring that education is not only focused on content mastery but also on the application of knowledge in real-life contexts. Learning English as a general course for non-English major university students often faces challenges of low motivation, limited engagement, and lack of perceived relevance. Applying deep learning principles in this context is therefore urgent, as it can help create a more supportive learning atmosphere, enhance student motivation, and strengthen the practical connection between English and students’ real-life needs. This study aims to explore deep learning approach implementation and the impacts for non-English major university students who learn English as general course.  This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using a closed-ended questionnaire based on a Likert scale, distributed to 108 students from three different study programs. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, validated by source triangulation. The results show that the majority of students perceived that lecturers successfully applied the principles of mindful (90%), meaningful (96%), and joyful learning (95.6%) in the learning process. Students reported increased focus, emotional engagement, relevance of the material to real-life contexts, and higher learning motivation. These findings indicate that the deep learning approach has a significantly positive impact on the effectiveness of English language learning. However, a small portion of students expressed disagreement, suggesting that there is still room for improvement, particularly regarding lecturer readiness and infrastructure support. Therefore, educator training and capacity building are essential steps to ensure the successful implementation of deep learning.

Abstract

There has to be a new way of thinking about reading in this technological age. This approach is called a multimodal approach. It is an approach that contributes to several modes in the reading sources. To explore students' attitudes towards reading through a multimodal approach in terms of their conative attitudes’ perception, this study employs this approach. This study used a descriptive quantitative method to fulfill the purpose. Fifteen students were purposively selected as the sample. They had the same characteristics, such as having completed the previous reading class. Ten steps were involved in conducting the study. The data were collected using a closed-ended questionnaire. A statistical analysis using SPSS was performed on the collected data. According to the numbers, four out of the eight categories are significantly high, accounting for 46.7%. It can be concluded that students have a pleasant impression. The statements made by the students demonstrate that they remained focused on reading through the channel informed by the teacher, participated in class, avoided procrastination with classmates, and engaged in reading. It can be concluded that based on the quantitative data, the students’ conative attitude perception towards the implementation of the multimodal approach in their reading class is positive.

Abstract

People from the colonized countries in the past moved to the United Kingdom to seek better lives. The researched novels depict this with the main characters of two different Muslim women. They must maintain their Islamic values while also adapting to English lifestyles and social relationships. The objective of the research is to identify patterns relating to how the concept of istiqamah (holding fast to Islamic principles) was practiced by Muslim woman characters in two novels, namely Brick Lane and The Translator, as well as the challenges faced by these characters in the novels. The research, being qualitative research, took the data from the two literary works in the form of primary data. The secondary data was taken from reviews of novels and other books. . Analysis of data was conducted by taking the excerpts from the novel being relevant to the theoretical concepts. The theory used is comparative literature, that is the application of religious concept(s) to literary works. The results showed that two different patterns in holding to istiqamah can be observed; one character is still steadfast in the principle, while the other changes. Future researchers are encouraged to conduct research by adding more novels having the same themes.
