Abstract

Primary lung cancers, or tumors originating in the lung, are relatively uncommon in dogs. The objectiveof this study was to describe the canine lung carcinoma that serially transplanted into severe combinedimmunodeficiency (SCID) mice, in order to established cell line from this tumor cell.  Morphology andcharacteristic of this canine lung carcinoma in SCID mice by histopathological and ultrastructuralexaminations with metastatic lesion in lung were also examined.  Histopathologically, the tumor masswere consisted of cuboidal to columnar cells with papillary pattern, uniform in size, the nuclei were oftenvariable in size, and some cells have vacuole on their cytoplasms.  Glandular forms were predominant withlobulated pattern, ductal pattern with papillary injected into tube-like structure were also encountered.Mitotic figures commonly found with inflammatory reaction were sometimes present in the interstitiumand lumen gland.  Ultrastructural analysis of the tumor cells showed round to oval cells with one or moreprominent nucleoli.  The cells possessed numerous mitochondria, smooth endoplasmic reticulum, andindividual cells which were interconnected via desmosomes.  Tonofilament characterize by long cytoplasmicmaterial was encountered.  Positive reaction of the round to oval tumor cells to anti keratin antibodyconfirmed that their epithelial cell nature.  Lung metastatic lesions were found in SCID mice aftertransplantation and this phenomenon indicated that canine lung carcinoma is tumorigenic to SCID mice.

Abstract

This study aim was to determine the immunomodulatory activity of noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) fruitextract in mice infected with Staphylococcus aureus. Mice were divided into two group :  non-infected  andinfected. Non Infected group was without S. aureus infection whereas the infected group was infected withS. aureus. Group contain control, dose 1 (25 mg/kg BW), dose 2 (100 mg/kg BW), and dose 3 (300 mg/kg BW).Oral treatment carried out for 20 days in every morning and each sample was injected with  S. aureus atday 21 with 109 cell/mL. Relative number of T cell (CD4+, CD4+CD25+),) and cytokine interferon-ã fromCD4+ T cell (CD4+IFN-ã+) subsets was measured using the BD FACSCaliburTM Flowcytometer. Data wereanalyzed by using Analysis of Varians (p<0,05) and SPSS 16 for windows. The result showed thatadministration of noni crude extract was significantly change the relative number of CD4+, CD4+IFN-ã+,and CD4+CD25+ T cells. Treatment of noni crude extract in non-infection group could increase  relativenumber of CD4+, CD4+IFN-ã+  and CD4+CD25+ T cells that might be caused by active compounds of noni asmitogen.  Giving of noni crude extract in infected group could reduce  the relative number of CD4+, CD4+CD25+and CD4+IFN-ã+ T cells due to it  active compounds as anti-inflamation. Noni fruit extract can be used aspreventive therapy on S. aureus infection  because it contains active compounds as an anti-inflammationeffect.

Abstract

The study aim of this  was to evaluate the effects of food restriction on metabolic aspects (bloodchemistry parameters) in Ettawa crossbred goats. Four adult male and clinically healthy Ettawa crossbredgoats were used in this study. The animals were kept in individual cage for 12 weeks. Animal feed consistedof aerial part of peanut plant and concentrate at a ratio of 60:40. The experiment was devided into 2phases of feeding periods, fullfeeding (ad libitum  feeding and restricted feeding. After the adaptationperiod for 4 weeks (week 1-4), the animals were fed ad libitum for 4 weeks (week 5-8), and then continuedwith 50% of the ad libitum feed intake during the following 4 weeks restricted feeding period (week 9-12).During the experiment, drinking water was supplied ad libitum. Body weight were examined and bloodsamples were collected at the end of the fullfeeding and restricted feeding periods for blood chemistryanalyses. Statistical differences were determined by paired t-Test at probability level of 0.05. This studyshowed that feed restriction up to about 50% of ad libitum (80% of maintenance) feed intake resulted inchanges of blood chemistry parameters. At the end of restricted feeding period, the elevated concentrationof serum inorganic phosphate, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, and cholesterine were observed and reducedconcentration of glucose, calcium, and triglyceride were observed. However no change was observed on  levelof arterial blood pH and the concentration of serum natrium, potassium, chloride, and protein. In conclusion, nutritional status has significant effect on blood chemistry parameters of Ettawa crossbred goats. Seruminorganic phosphate, calcium, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, cholesterine, glucose, and triglycerideconcentration could provide the more reliable information for assessment of the nutritional status ofEttawa crossbred goat.

Abstract

The bat is very important for human life, because of their  role as pollinator of plants, as a producer oforganic fertilizer,  and as food.  In Northern Celebes fruit eating bats serve as exotic food, so the presenceof bats were threatened to be extinct due to uncontrolled hunting.  The changes of the forest for plantationlands, damage the habitats and the bats were forced to migrate out.   The aim of the study was to identifythe fruit eating bats of Celebes.  Morphometry of body size, skull,  and physical characteristics were usedin determining the types and distribution  of fruit eating bats in Celebes. The field survey was carried outat the hunting area, bat dealers, and bat sellers. The collected data were analyzed by using descriptivemethod and interpreted by narrating to describe the entire study. The result show that  there were fivetypes of fruit eating bats : i.e.  kalong sulawesi (Acerodon celebensis),  paniki pallas (Nyctimene cephalotes),codot wallet (Thoopterus nigrescens), nyap biasa (Rousettus amplexicaudatus), and  kalong hitam  (Pteropusalecto).

Abstract

Tolerance between donor and recipient is a key for successful allogeneic transplantation. To determinethe involvement of CD8+ T cells in regulating T cell homeostasis in allogeneic transplantation, spleen cellswere analyzed post bone marrow transplantation. In this study, C57BL/6 mice were used as donor andBALB/c mice were used as recipients. BALB/c mice were irradiated with a lethal dose of 850 rad prior tothe transplantation. Twenty-four hours post a radiation BABL/c mice were transplanted with bone marrowcells (10x106) derived from C57BL/6 mice that free from mature T cells. Analysis of hematopoietic cells inthe spleen was done two months post-transplantation. The results showed that CD8+CD25+FOXP3+ T cellin collaborasion with CD4+ regulatory T cell contribute to the prevention of graft-versus-host diseases(GVHD). In this study at was demonstrated that naïve CD4+CD62L+ T cells dominated the sub set of Tcells, whereas the development of CD4+CD44+ memory T cells are very limited. In conclusion, that regulatoryT cells maintain normal homeostasis by maintaining T cells remained at naïve status.
