Abstract

The implementation of the PLN Nusantara Power Integrated Management System (PLN NP-IMS) requires competent internal auditors in accordance with ISO 19011:2018 to ensure effective management system auditing and continual improvement. A needs assessment identified gaps in auditors' competencies, particularly in risk-based auditing, audit program development, evidence collection, audit reporting, and follow-up of audit findings. This community service program aimed to enhance the knowledge and practical skills of PT PLN Nusantara Power employees through an In-House Training on ISO 19011:2018 and an Internal Audit Workshop for PLN NP-IMS. The program adopted a Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) approach combining lectures, interactive discussions, case studies, workshops, and audit simulations. Program effectiveness was evaluated using pre-tests, post-tests, competency observations, and participant satisfaction questionnaires. The results showed that the average participant score increased from 64.8 to 88.6, representing an improvement of 23.8 points. The average competency observation score reached 4.43 (good category), while participant satisfaction achieved 4.87 (excellent category). Beyond improving individual competencies, the program established a shared understanding of internal audit practices and strengthened the implementation of PLN NP-IMS. These findings demonstrate that the training approach was effective in enhancing internal auditor competency and supporting the implementation of an integrated management system within PT PLN Nusantara Power.

Abstract

The global energy transition and decarbonization agenda have positioned coal-fired power plants (PLTU) in a strategic dilemma, as they remain essential for maintaining electricity supply reliability while simultaneously facing increasing pressure to reduce carbon emissions. This condition requires PLTU organizations to develop adaptive strategies that can respond effectively to regulatory changes, stakeholder demands, and environmental uncertainty. This study aims to analyze the role of strategic management principles as an adaptive strategy for PLTU in the era of decarbonization and to examine their implications for the sustainability of organizational performance, with decarbonization pressure acting as a moderating variable. The study employs a quantitative, causal-explanatory research design, with data collected through structured questionnaires from managerial and supervisory personnel working in PLTU in Indonesia. Data analysis is conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The results demonstrate that the application of strategic management principles has a positive and significant effect on adaptive strategy, indicating that systematic processes such as environmental scanning, strategic formulation, implementation, and strategic control play a critical role in enhancing organizational adaptability. Furthermore, adaptive strategy is found to have a significant positive impact on the sustainability of PLTU performance, enabling organizations to maintain operational stability and efficiency under increasing environmental and regulatory pressures. The moderating analysis reveals that decarbonization pressure strengthens the relationship between strategic management principles and adaptive strategy, suggesting that external environmental pressure can function as a catalyst for strategic transformation when supported by strong strategic capabilities. This study concludes that the sustainability of PLTU performance in the era of decarbonization is highly dependent on the effective integration of strategic management principles into adaptive strategies, thereby positioning strategic management as a key enabler of organizational resilience during the energy transition.

Abstract

Abstract

This study systematically reviews the strategic transformation of power utilities in the context of the global energy transition, driven by decarbonization, digitalization, and decentralization. Using a PRISMA-based approach, this research analyzes peer-reviewed articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science from 2000 to 2025. The findings reveal four dominant research clusters: (1) external drivers, (2) strategic responses, (3) transformation capabilities, and (4) performance outcomes. Despite the rapid growth of the literature, existing studies remain fragmented, with limited integration between strategic management theories and energy transition research. This study contributes by proposing a novel integrative framework—SET-UP (Strategic Energy Transformation of Utilities under Pressure)—which explains how external pressures shape strategic responses and organizational capabilities, ultimately influencing performance outcomes. The paper advances the literature by bridging strategic management and energy transition studies and outlines a future research agenda focusing on emerging economies, capability development, and longitudinal analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of regulatory and political pressures on dynamic capabilities and their implications for the performance of energy companies in the context of the energy transition in Indonesia. The global energy transition is pushing energy companies to adjust their business strategies and improve their organizational capabilities in responding to changes in regulations, technology, and sustainability demands. This study uses a quantitative approach with a survey method of managers and heads of strategic units in energy sector companies in Indonesia. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using the Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) method. The results show that regulatory and political pressures have a positive and significant influence on the dynamic capabilities of energy companies. These findings suggest that changes in energy policies, environmental standards, and political dynamics encourage companies to improve their strategic adaptability and organizational innovation. Furthermore, dynamic capabilities have been shown to have a positive and significant influence on company performance. Companies that are able to effectively integrate, build, and reconfigure organizational resources tend to perform better in the face of changes in the energy sector business environment. This study contributes to the development of strategic management and sustainability literature by demonstrating that dynamic capabilities play a crucial role in linking institutional pressures with improved company performance in the energy transition era. Practically, the results of this study provide implications for energy companies to strengthen organizational capabilities, increase innovation in clean energy technology, and integrate sustainability strategies into long-term business planning.

Abstract

This study examines the strategic determinants and performance consequences of Energy Transition Strategy Intensity in Indonesian power companies. Drawing on Institutional Theory, the Resource-Based View, Corporate Governance Theory, and Dynamic Capability Theory, the study investigates the effects of Institutional Pressure, Firm Characteristics, Corporate Governance, and Dynamic Capabilities on transition strategy and firm performance. A quantitative explanatory approach was applied to 42 Indonesian electricity companies during 2021–2025, generating  firm-year observations analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. The results show that Institutional Pressure, Firm Characteristics, Corporate Governance, and Dynamic Capabilities significantly influence Energy Transition Strategy Intensity, with Dynamic Capabilities emerging as the strongest determinant. High Leverage constrains strategic flexibility and transition investment. Energy Transition Strategy Intensity has a strong positive effect on Non-Financial Performance, particularly environmental, social, and governance outcomes, emission reductions, stakeholder trust, and organizational legitimacy, while its positive effect on Financial Performance is weaker and more gradual. The strategy also mediates the relationships between Institutional Pressure, Corporate Governance, and firm performance, while Dynamic Capabilities strengthen the effect of Institutional Pressure on transition intensity. The study concludes that energy transition is a capability-driven strategic reconfiguration process rather than merely a regulatory compliance initiative. Regulatory alignment, organizational capability development, effective governance, and financial flexibility are therefore essential to support sustainable transformation and long-term value creation in the electricity sector.
