Abstract

The Special Region of Yogyakarta achieved the highest national performance in the 2026 Academic Competency Test, highlighting the need to examine educational factors associated with students’ academic achievement, including literacy culture. This study synthesizes the relationship between literacy culture and academic achievement and examines its implications for interpreting Yogyakarta’s test results. A systematic literature review was conducted using a selection process guided by PRISMA 2020. The corpus comprised 21 publications issued between 2020 and 2026, including journal articles, conference proceedings, a thesis, a preprint, and official national and international reports. The publications were retrieved from Google Scholar, Scopus, ERIC, Crossref, Dimensions, and Garuda and analyzed through thematic content analysis. The synthesis indicates that literacy culture is associated with reading habits, information comprehension and literacy, critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and various indicators of academic achievement. These relationships are also shaped by family support, teacher competence, the school environment, learning motivation, and socioeconomic conditions. The findings position literacy culture as a strategic component of the educational ecosystem that may support academic achievement. In the context of Yogyakarta’s 2026 Academic Competency Test results, literacy culture provides a relevant conceptual perspective for interpreting the province’s performance; however, it cannot be regarded as a direct causal factor without further empirical investigation.

Abstract

General Background: Indonesia’s cultural pluralism encompasses the Tamaddun Melayu civilization, a rich repository of local wisdom and ethical systems currently vulnerable to erosion in the era of globalization. Specific Background: SMA Negeri 1 Batam serves as a strategic site for exploring how educational institutions integrate these values to counter cultural degradation among youth. Knowledge Gap: Existing educational practices often lack structured, multi-dimensional approaches to cultural preservation, creating a disconnect between national character education goals and local implementation. Aims: This study aims to examine the strategies for internalizing Tamaddun Melayu values at SMA Negeri 1 Batam through intracurricular, cocurricular, and extracurricular activities using a phenomenological approach. Results: The findings reveal that schools implement a synergistic model: integrating Malay values into Sociology coursework, utilizing experiential learning through local wisdom exploration, and reinforcing cultural identity via arts and traditional attire. Novelty: By applying Culturally Responsive Teaching (CRT) and Bourdieu’s Habitus Theory, this research demonstrates that a tri-pathway strategy effectively transforms cultural knowledge into incorporated habitus. Implications: The results provide an adaptive model for schools in the Riau Islands to strengthen student cultural identity and character education through structured, community-linked pedagogical practices. Highlights Integration of Malay values within Sociology curriculum establishes a robust conceptual foundation for students. Cocurricular exploration of local wisdom facilitates authentic, experiential learning that effectively deepens cultural habituation. Participation in extracurricular arts and traditional practices solidifies symbolic capital and collective cultural identity among learners. Abstract

Indonesia’s cultural diversity demands fair and inclusive representation in educational materials, especially in junior high school Social Studies (IPS) textbooks. This study aims to examine the representation of cultural diversity in IPS textbooks and explore the perceptions of Social Studies Education master’s students, both those with and without teaching experience. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data were collected through a structured questionnaire developed from relevant literature and validated by experts. The data were analyzed using a Likert scale and presented in percentages to identify students’ perception trends. The results show that IPS textbooks include narratives on cultural diversity, mainly related to religion and respect for differences. However, the students perceive that cultural representation remains uneven, particularly in terms of ethnicity, traditions, local languages, and regional perspectives. The textbooks tend to emphasize dominant cultures while underrepresenting minority ones. Multicultural values are mostly presented in general terms, lacking inclusive and detailed content. This highlights the need to enrich the narratives to better reflect the true diversity of Indonesian society.
