Abstract

Thermal insulation in a residence can help keep the room's temperature stable, allowing maximum comfort at work and relaxation. Because of its low thermal conductivity value of 0.1166 W/mK, banana stem fiber (BP) is an environmentally friendly thermal insulation material, while the matrix uses polypropylene (PP). Because excessive polypropylene production can pollute the environment, recycled polypropylene (PPDU) should be investigated as a candidate matrix. This study employs compression molding at a pressure of 8 MPa and a temperature of 170 °C for 60 minutes, with volume fractions of banana stem fibers varying by 10%, 30%, and 50%, as well as different matrix types, namely PP and PPDU. The manufacturing results were then evaluated using density and thermal conductivity tests. The density testing results for BP/PP and BP/PPDU decreased as more volume fractions were added. This phenomenon can occur as a result of void formation during the manufacturing process. Furthermore, the thermal conductivity values for BP/PP increased from 0.37 to 0.89 W/mK and from 0.58 to 0.94 W/mK for BP/PPDU, respectively. The lower the thermal conductivity value, the smaller the volume fraction of fiber. Similarly, pure PP is preferable because it has lower conductivity values than PPDU.

Abstract

[EN] As an alternative to conventional energy sources, wind energy is one of the many alternative energies that have been developed. The utilization of this energy is inseparable from its conversion tool, windmills. One component of the windmill that is quite important is the blade. Blades often experience problems in the form of erosion on the surface due to collisions by particles carried by the wind which can cause the blade function to be not optimal. So, it takes a replacement material that is stronger but lighter, namely composite. The composites used were natural fiber composites (Melaleuca leucadendra-polyester fibers). In this study, the effect of the volume fraction of fiber in the form of shavings on tensile strength, flexibility, and toughness will be investigated. The making of natural fiber composites of Galam Wood (Melaleuca leucadendra) -polyester by mixing resin, catalyst, and Galam Wood fiber in the form of shavings is then printed in a mold that has been coated with aluminum foil. Samples were then tested for tensile strength with ASTM D 638 standard, bending test with ASTM D 790 standard and impact testing under ASTM D 6110 standard. The method used in manufacturing was the hand lay-up method. The result of this study is the optimum value achieved is 70% fiber in all mechanical tests. Obtained tensile strength values of 13.07 MPa, the optimum bending strength of 36.8 MPa and the optimum value of impact strength of 590.39 MPa.

Abstract

Although Indonesia is abundant supply of salak (Salacca zalacca) fruit, bark of salak is not yet advanced utilized. This work therefore chracterized its fiber and process it into polymer matrix composites. The study was conducted using varied chemical treatments. Delignification using NaOH solution with concentration of 1%, 5%, 10% with 3 hours immersion time. Bleaching treatment was using H2O2 media with varied immersion time at 30, 60 and 90 minutes. Tensile tests, impact tests, microscopic image test using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and chemical composition test using fourier-transform infra-red (FTIR) spectroscopy were carried out in this work. This work showed that optimal delignification treatment can be found when 5% NaOH concentration was used. The corresponding ultimate tensile strength and impact strength were 25.47 MPa and 11.95 kJ/m2, respectively. The optimal bleaching treatment was 90 minutes immersion. The results of SEM image analysis showed that the salak midrib fiber composite without treatment has a lousy interface. Meanwhile, fiber with delignification treatment only has reasonable good interface and fiber with delignation treatment followed by bleaching treatment has excellent interface. FTIR test results showed that the salak midrib fiber composite without treatment had a cellulose component although hemicellulose and lignin levels still dominated. The delignification treatment had succesfully broken the lignin-specific C = O bond but still could not eliminated hemicellulose and lignin bond. In comparison, bleaching treatment reduced intensity of OH intensity, CH and CO which are typical hemicellulose and lignin functional groups. Based on the results of the study, salak midrib fiber with delignification chemical treatment using 5% NaOH for 3 hours followed by bleaching treatment using 2% H2O2 for 90 minutes was the best treatment.
