Abstract

Oral and dental health is a component of overall health that can significantly impact a child's quality of life. Dental caries is a major oral health problem among preschool children. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the severity of dental caries and the quality of life of children attending TK Bersama Ceria Delitua kindergarten. This analytical survey employed a cross-sectional design. The study population consisted of all children enrolled. A sample size of 30 participants was selected using purposive sampling. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires and dental examinations. Data analysis was performed using Spearman's rank correlation coefficient. The mean decay (d) score was 5.47 ± 2.474, the mean extraction (e) score was 0.80 ± 1.064, and the mean filling (f) score was 0.13 ± 0.434. The overall mean def-t score was 6.40 ± 2.908. The mean child quality of life, as measured by the Early Childhood Oral Health Impact Scale (ECOHIS), was 46.43 ± 7.873. Spearman's correlation analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between the severity of dental caries and children's quality of life (p = 0.003; r = 0.521), indicating a strong relationship. The study concludes that a higher def-t score is associated with a poorer quality of life in children.

Abstract

Observations in Pancur Batu District, Deli Serdang Regency, revealed an abundant growth of Bacang mango trees (Mangifera foetida), yet their potential benefits remain underutilized by the local community. This study aimed to investigate and provide insight into the antibacterial properties of Bacang mango leaf extract. An experimental laboratory study was conducted using a randomized posttest-only control group design. The results demonstrated that Bacang mango leaf extract effectively inhibited the growth of Streptococcus mutans in vitro, surpassing the efficacy of 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate used as a positive control. Measurement of the inhibition zone diameters indicated a proportional relationship between extract concentration and antibacterial efficacy. At 25% concentration, the mean inhibition zone diameter was 13.15 ± 0.49 mm. Increasing the concentration to 50% yielded a larger diameter of 15.75 ± 0.66 mm, while the highest antibacterial activity was observed at 75% concentration, with an inhibition zone diameter of 16.73 ± 0.55 mm. In comparison, the 0.2% chlorhexidine digluconate positive control produced an inhibition zone diameter of only 12.50 ± 0.26 mm. These findings suggest that Bacang mango leaf extract at 75% concentration is the most effective in inhibiting Streptococcus mutans growth. Its significantly greater inhibitory effect relative to lower concentrations and the positive control highlights its potential as a natural antibacterial agent.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui analisis uji organoleptik produk obat kumur minyak atsiri buah kapulaga pada pasien di Halitosis Care Center RS Siti Hajar Medan. Jenis penelitian adalah survei dengan desain cross sectional denganxpopulasi pasien halitosis yang berobat di Halitosis Care Center RS Siti Hajar Medan. Besar sampel dihitung menggunakan rumus estimasi proporsi dan diperoleh sampel sebanyak 35 orang. Pengujian organoleptik dengan cara menyebarkan kuesioner kepada sampel melalui Google form dengan memberikan penilaian terhadap produk obat kumur minyak atsiri buah kapulaga ditinjau dari rasa, aroma, warna, dan bentuk. Data dianalsiis secara deksriptif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, mayoritas responden menyebutkan bahwa rasa dari obat kumur adalah enak (40%), dan segar (51,4%), sangat beraroma (51,4%) dengan aroma yang wangi dan segar (45,7%), warna yang sangat menarik (45,7%), dan bentuk dari produk membuat responden sangat tertarik untuk dibeli (54,3%). Produk obat kumur minyak atsiri buah kapulaga telah memiliki kualitas yang sangat baik.

Abstract

Halitosis is an oral health problem frequently associated with salivary condition, particularly its degree of acidity (pH). Acidic salivary pH supports the growth of anaerobic bacteria which produce volatile sulphur compounds, the primary cause of oral malodour. A non-pharmacological approach with the potential to neutralise salivary pH is the use of natural substances, such as avocado fruit (Persea americana), which contains bioactive compounds with antibacterial and acid-buffering effects. This study aimed to determine the effect of avocado consumption on salivary pH in students with halitosis. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest model was employed. The sample consisted of 38 students meeting the inclusion criteria of having acidic salivary pH and halitosis. Salivary pH was measured before intervention, and at 30 and 60 minutes after subjects chewed 10 grams of avocado 32 times. Data were analysed using the Friedman and Wilcoxon tests with a significance level of 5%. The results demonstrated a significant increase in salivary pH 30 minutes after avocado consumption, from an acidic towards a neutral state (p < 0.05). However, at the 60-minute measurement, salivary pH returned to baseline and showed no significant difference compared to pre-intervention values (p > 0.05). This indicates that the effect of avocado consumption on increasing salivary pH is transient. In conclusion, consuming avocado fruit can significantly increase salivary pH in the short term and may help reduce halitosis, although regular consumption coupled with diligent oral hygiene practices is necessary to maintain this effect.

Abstract

Tooth extraction is one of the simple procedures commonly found in dentistry. Bleeding is a common complication following this procedure. It requires special equipment and can quickly lead to shock, syncope, and death if not treated promptly. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of Areca seed or beetle leaf ethanol extract in shortening bleeding time after tooth extraction in a Wistar rat model. Thirty-two male Wistar rats were divided into two treatment groups. The first group was treated with piper beetle leaf ethanol extract, and the second group was treated with areca seed ethanol extract. This extract was directly applied to the tooth socket. Meanwhile, the bleeding time was recorded on a filter paper every half minute using a stopwatch. All data were analyzed by T-Independent Test. The results of this study indicated a significant difference in bleeding time between the first group (betel leaf ethanol extract) and the second group (areca seed ethanol extract) with a p-value < 0.001. The mean bleeding time for the first group (143.19 ± 15.93 seconds) was longer than that for the second group (88.06 ± 23.80 seconds). Overall, it can be concluded that the areca seed ethanol extract significantly shortens bleeding time compared to piper beetle extract.

Abstract

Halitosis, known as bad breath, is a condition in which many patients complain about that cause unpleasant odor that comes from the mouth, which can affect the quality of life both psychologically and social life. Knowledge of maintaining oral health plays an important role in oral health conditions. This research to discover whether there is correlation between halitosis and the level of oral hygiene in high school students at Letjen S.Parman school in Medan. Researcher used a descriptive observational method which then analyzed the data using SPSS bivariate analysis with Pearson measuring to analyze the correlation between halitosis and oral hygiene. Shapiro-Wilk test found sig.value amounting to 0.180 on the questionnaire score and 0.068 on the OHIS, both results are greater than 0.05 indicates the datas are normally distributed. Then bivariate analysis was carried out and the Pearson results obtained showed Sig (2 tailed) value of 0.421, where the significance value was Sig.(2 tailed) 0.004<0.05, so can be affirmed that there is a relation between halitosis and the level of oral hygiene. H1 is accepted, which defines that there is an association between halitosis and the level oral hygiene of high school teenagers at Letjen S. Parman Medan school.

Abstract

Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis are bacterial pathogens of dental caries and root canal treatment failure. The growth of bacteria that cause dental and oral disease can be inhibited by using antibacterials derived from plants that have antibacterial properties. The aim of the research was to compare the antibacterial effectiveness of Moringa oleifera leaf extract against the growth of Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus mutans bacteria in vitro. This type of research is a laboratory experiment with a post test only control group design. The research samples were pure cultures of Streptococcus mutans and Enterococcus faecalis. There were seven treatment groups, namely Moringa leaf extract concentrations of 50%, 25%, 12.5%, 6.25%, 3.125%, positive control chlorhexidine and negative control DMSO with four repetitions each. Testing the antibacterial effectiveness of Moringa leaf extract used the diffusion and dilution method, then the data was analyzed using one way ANOVA and post hoc LSD statistical tests. Based on the research results, it was stated that there was effective inhibitory and killing power of Moringa oleifera leaf extract on the growth of Enterococcus faecalis and Streptococcus mutans bacteria. From the research results, it can be concluded that Moringa oleifera leaf extract is more effective as an antibacterial against Streptoccus mutans compared to Enterococcus faecalis

Abstract

Masalah kesehatan gigi mulut anak sekolah yang sering terjadi adalah karies gigi. Hal ini disebabkan oleh masih buruknya perilaku anak sekolah yang mempunyai kebiasaan makan coklat, permen dan tidak menyikat gigi secara teratur. Perawatan gigi sejak usia dini diharapkan dapat mencegah kerusakan pada email dan kekuatan pertumbuhan gigi anak. Salah satu upaya untuk mencegah terjadinya karies gigi adalah dengan memberikan edukasi kesehatan gigi mulut serta melakukan Topikal Aplikasi Fluor (TAF). TAF adalah perawatan gigi dengan mengoleskan fluoride langsung ke permukaan gigi untuk memperkuat email dan mencegah karies gigi. Perawatan ini sangat di anjurkan untuk anak usia sekolah. Departemen Ilmu kesehatan Gigi Masyarakat Pencegahan, Fakultas kedokteran gigi Universitas Prima Medan mengadakan bakti sosial dengan memberikan edukasi dan Topikal Aplikasi Fluor pada 120 Anak SD IT Cendikia. Kegiatan ini penting dilakukan secara terprogram di sekolah agar cakupan pencegahan meningkatkan dan status kesehatan gigi anak dapat lebih terjaga.

Abstract

Composite resin is one of the most widely used restorative materials in dentistry due to its aesthetic properties, mechanical strength, and ease of manipulation. However, the long-term mechanical stability of composite resins can be affected by chemical exposure, such as from mouthwash solutions used in daily oral hygiene routines. This study aimed to determine the difference in microhardness of microhybrid composite resin after immersion in mouthwash containing alcohol, alcohol-free mouthwash, and herbal mouthwash. This was an experimental laboratory study with a pre-test and post-test group design. A total of 30 samples of microhybrid composite resin (Solare X) were divided into three groups, each immersed for 48 hours at 36°C in Listerine Multi Protect Zero (alcohol-containing), MeToo Mouthwash Probiotic (alcohol-free), and Amodent Gargle with Cardamom Essential Oil (herbal). The microhardness values were measured using a Vickers Hardness Tester, and the data were analyzed using One Way ANOVA followed by Post Hoc Bonferroni tests. The results showed a significant increase in surface hardness after immersion in all groups, with the highest mean value in the alcohol-containing mouthwash group (32.85 VHN), followed by the herbal mouthwash (29.23 VHN), and the alcohol-free mouthwash (24.05 VHN) (p < 0.05). It can be concluded that all types of mouthwash have a significant effect on the surface hardness of microhybrid composite resin. Abstract

Halitosis is a significant oral health concern with considerable psychosocial consequences, particularly among dental students who are expected to uphold exemplary oral hygiene as future professionals. This study investigated the association between halitosis and quality of life among dental students at Universitas Prima Indonesia. A cross-sectional design was employed, involving 31 dental students selected through purposive sampling from August to September 2025. Halitosis was objectively assessed using the Tanita Breath Checker and categorized into three severity levels, whereas quality of life was evaluated using the validated Oral Health Impact Profile-14 (OHIP-14) questionnaire. The findings indicated that 51.6% of participants experienced moderate halitosis, while 58.1% reported moderate impairment in quality of life. Statistical analysis revealed a significant correlation between halitosis severity and quality of life (p = 0.001), demonstrating a clear gradient relationship in which greater halitosis severity corresponded to poorer quality of life. Notably, all respondents reported inadequate tongue-cleaning and mouthwash use despite their dental training. These findings underscore a critical paradox in dental education: future oral health professionals exhibiting suboptimal oral hygiene practices that contribute to halitosis and, in turn, negatively affect their well-being. The study highlights the need to integrate targeted oral health promotion initiatives into dental curricula to address both the clinical and psychosocial dimensions of halitosis, thereby enhancing the professional competence and overall well-being of dental students.
