Abstract

Throughout the world, almost every day, 800 mothers die due to complications of pregnancy and childbirth, and more than 5 million babies die every year. One factor that can increase the risk of maternal and infant death is Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) during pregnancy. This research aimed to analyse the determinants of CED factors in pregnant women with modifications to Lawrence Green's and Snehandu B. Kar's theories. This research used an analytical survey with a cross-sectional approach. In August–September 2023, there were 97 cases and 97 controls. The sampling technique was purposive sampling—bivariate analysis used chi-square and multivariate with a logistic regression test. The statistical analysis showed that education, gravida, parity, pregnancy interval, and husband's support have a significant relationship with CED (p<0.05). Meanwhile, age, knowledge, occupation, Antenatal care (ANC) examination, intention to become pregnant, independence in making health decisions, the role of health workers, family and health cadre support, transportation facilities, and ease of obtaining health information were not significant relationships to CED (p>0.05). Multivariate statistical analysis showed primigravida was the most dominant factor (p<0.05). The factors of education, gravida, parity, pregnancy interval, and husband's support were significant relationships with CED in pregnant women. The most dominant factor causing CED is primigravida. We recommend providing optimal FE tablets and educating adolescents about the importance of adolescent nutrition and integrated services in the school environment.

Abstract

Background: Nutritional problems in toddlers remain a serious issue in several regions in Indonesia, including the working area of Songgon Health Center in Banyuwangi Regency. Aims: This study aims to analyze the influence of community and societal factors on wasting in children aged 3-5 years. Methods: The study uses a case-control approach with the entire population of toddlers in the working area of Songgon Primary Health Center as the target population. A cluster random sampling technique was used to obtain a sample of 166 individuals (83 wasting cases and 83 controls). Data were collected using a questionnaire that had passed validity and reliability testing. The collected data were analyzed through bivariate analysis using the chi-square test, and multivariate analysis using logistic regression. Results: The research results on wasting showed the following pvalues: t for family income 0.520 > α (0.05); occupation 0.263 > α (0.05 access to healthcare 0.121 > α (0.05); f immunization status 0.064 > α (0.05); education 0.436 > α (0.05); maternal knowledge 0.148 > α (0.05); family support 0.931 > α (0.05), and food security 0.430 > α (0.05), thus it can be interpreted these do not have a significant influence on wasting incidence. However, environmental sanitation significantly influences wasting incidence, as the p-value is 0.002 < α (0.05). Conclusion: The most influential factor in wasting incidence is environmental sanitation. Meanwhile, factors that have no influence are family income, mother’s occupation, healthcare access, immunization, education, knowledge, family support, and food safety.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Stunting is a global health issue that affects children's growth and development, particularly in developing countries. One of the effective prevention strategies is a parent-based approach, including educational models such as Sekolah Orang Tua Hebat (SOTH). However, the effectiveness of this model compared to other approaches still needs further study. This article is a literature review to analyze the effectiveness of a parent-based approach in preventing stunting. This study uses a literature review method with a narrative approach. The search was conducted through scientific databases such as Google Scholar, Garuda, and ScienceDirect using keywords like "stunting prevention," "parenting approach," and "Sekolah Orang Tua Hebat." Inclusion criteria included articles discussing parent-based interventions for stunting prevention published in the last five years. A review of 10 selected articles shows that parent-based interventions can improve nutritional knowledge, parenting styles, and health practices contributing to stunting prevention. One highly relevant model is Sekolah Orang Tua Hebat (SOTH). This model effectively increases parental involvement in children's nutrition and early stimulation. However, some studies highlight that its effectiveness depends on socioeconomic factors, access to information, and program sustainability. SOTH has the advantage of providing holistic education for parents, but it requires government and community support to optimize its impact. Comparisons with other approaches, such as community-based interventions, suggest combining strategies may yield more significant. A parent-based approach, mainly through the SOTH model, can be an effective solution for stunting prevention. However, further research is needed to identify the success factors and challenges in implementing this program. Keywords: Stunting, Parental Approach, Great Parent's School, Prevention of Malnutrition, Family Education.
