Abstract

This study discusses the use of digital media and the public’s access to information in the fields of education and politics in Pangandaran Regency, West Java. In regards to assumptions of the Social Constructionism Theory (SCOT), people’s understandings about the presence of technology in their life    depend on how they interpret and treat the technology. As to the assumptions related to the public sphere, the potential for digital media to serve as a public sphere could also be questioned. This research uses a case study conducted by applying several data collection techniques, namely; in-depth interviews, observation and documentation studies. This study found that the high use of digital media in Pangandaran is not only the result of easy access but also people's perspectives of technology. Digital media can be an alternative to find educational information.  However, there is still a lack of information which is needed very much by the public about educational scholarships and studies at universities.  Meanwhile, political information is limited due to a lack of effort to disseminate government programs that are directly related to or will directly benefit the public. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that digital media has the potential to become a public sphere with a very limited function, namely a sphere where public interests can be discussed and citizens’ awareness of and participation in education and politics can be increased. In addition, the use of digital media can only be increased if there is awareness among individuals or institutions to utilize digital media so that the quality of digital literacy and political will possessed by all parties including the public, government and members of the Pangandaran Regency Regional House of Representatives will improve accordingly.

Abstract

This study examines how Tempo magazine represents the ethical scandal of the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court through its October 22 and November 12, 2023 covers. Using a qualitative approach, the study integrates Peirce’s semiotics and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation to analyze how meaning is constructed and ideologically framed in visual media. The findings show that Tempo consistently constructs the scandal not as an isolated personal violation, but as a broader institutional crisis. This representation is produced through the interaction of judicial iconography, metaphors of rupture and collapse, and critical lexical framing. At the micro level, semiotic analysis reveals structured relations among signs that signify weakened judicial legitimacy. At the macro level, these sign patterns function as an encoding strategy that directs audiences toward a preferred reading in which judicial authority is delegitimized and linked to political dynasty. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that Tempo’s visual representation operates as a counter-hegemonic discourse that challenges the normalization of dynastic politics and highlights tensions surrounding judicial independence. By integrating semiotic and representational approaches, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how media actively constructs political meaning and participates in broader ideological struggles.

Abstract

Increasing company performance means increasing shareholder wealth, which has often been the focus of previous research. Company performance is investors' perception of the company. This research aims to determine the effect of environmental cost accounting on company financial performance. The company's financial performance is proxied by the Return on Assets (ROA) indicator. Furthermore, the research year focuses only from 2019- 2023. The results of hypothesis testing using SPSS show that the partial significance value for the environmental cost accounting variable is 0.145 > 0.05, which means that environmental cost accounting has no effect on the company's financial performance. So it can be concluded that H0 is accepted and Ha is rejected.

Abstract

The dominance of mainstream media often sidelines the voices of marginalised groups, prompting the emergence of alternative media as a form of symbolic resistance. Bandungbergerak, a local alternative media outlet, consistently highlights progressive issues and amplifies the interests of vulnerable communities in Bandung. This study examined how Bandungbergerak represents minority groups in Bandung, how it curates and publishes related issues, and how it navigates the challenges of sustaining an alternative discursive space. The research employed a qualitative approach through in-depth interviews. The findings reveal that Bandungbergerak consistently provides a platform for marginalised voices, adopting humanistic and participatory journalistic practices. Issue selection is based on public urgency and is carried out in collaboration with local communities. Despite its contributions, the media faces structural challenges, including limited resources, social backlash and digital threats. This study emphasised that supporting a diversity of voices in alternative local media is not just about promoting inclusivity, but also about democratising media ecosystems at the local level.
