Abstract

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has had a psychological impact on the elderly. The elderly feel lonely and depressed. Spirituality to deal with the pandemic is needed by the elderly. This study aims to determine the relationship between spirituality with depression and loneliness in the elderly. This research was conducted with a cross-sectional approach using a questionnaire on 142 elderly respondents. Based on the Spearman rank correlation test results, there is a unidirectional relationship between spirituality scores and depression scores with a p-value of 0.038 (p <0.05). The correlation coefficient between spirituality scores and depression scores is 0.174, which means that the higher the spirituality score, the higher the depression score with feeble relationship strength. There is a direct relationship between spirituality with a p-value of 0.00 (p <0.05). The correlation coefficient value between spirituality score and loneliness score is 0.306, which means that the higher the spirituality score, the higher the loneliness score with low relationship strength. Spirituality is not the only factor that can improve depression and loneliness in the elderly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Other aspects need to be identified to help overcome depression and loneliness in the elderly.

Abstract

Hallucinations are absorption (perception) of the five senses without any stimulation from outside. The way to control hallucinations is by conducting therapeutic communication. Therapeutic Communication is communication done by nurses during nursing interventions to help the patient's healing process and help patients overcome the problems they face through communication. Nurse's therapeutic communication has four phases of communication namely the phase of pre-interaction, orientation or introduction, work and termination. This study aims to improve the ability of schizophrenia patients in controlling hallucinations in Menur Mental Hospital Surabaya. The method in this research was a case study using two subjects. The results of this study indicate that after doing therapeutic communication with a frequency of 6 sessions in 6 days both subjects experienced an increase in the ability to control hallucinations. Therapeutic communication can improve the ability to control the hallucinations of the subject if it is done in stages according to the process that can be used.

Abstract

Against the backdrop of the COVID-19 pandemic, the demands placed on nursing students during clinical practice have necessitated a heightened level of professionalism. Paradoxically, this intensified clinical environment has also given rise to increased rates of depression among nursing students, compounding the preexisting challenges they face. This study is driven by the objective of investigating the correlation between coping strategies and depression among nursing students actively engaged in clinical practice during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 373 nursing students participated in this cross-sectional study. The assessment of depression among the respondents was carried out using the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Coping strategies were evaluated through the application of the Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Inventory (Brief-COPE). The results yielded significant insights, with the coping strategy of reframing (p=0.009) demonstrating a noteworthy correlation with depression. In the realm of emotion-focused coping strategies, while the acceptance subscale (p=0.310) did not exhibit a significant correlation with depression, emotional support (p=0.037), venting (p=0.000), humor (p=0.000), and self-blame (p=0.003) all displayed notable correlations with depression. Furthermore, within the domain of avoidance coping, self-distraction (p=0.000), denial (p=0.008), substance use (p=0.000), and behavioral disengagement (p=0.000) subscales were also found to be significantly correlated with depression. nThese findings underscore the paramount importance of fostering adaptive coping strategies and emphasize the pivotal role of clinical instructors in preparing and bolstering students to effectively manage their emotional well-being during clinical practice, particularly within the challenging context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
