Abstract

The debate over the effectiveness of taxes as a tool for promoting economic growth still needs to be solved, with several studies indicating mixed effects of taxes on economic growth. The purpose of this research is to assess the impact of taxation on economic growth in Africa. The study spans eleven years, from 2008 to 2018, and includes multiple variables for 21 African countries. GDP is a dependent variable used as a proxy for economic growth. Numerous GDP-determining predictors were utilized as independent variables; these variables were categorized into three groups: The supply side consists of human capital (population and literacy rate) and economic activities (trade and services). Demand side variables include consumption, government expenditures, net exports, and gross capital formation. Lastly, taxation variables consist of tax revenue, corporate tax rate, number of tax payments, personal income tax, and taxes on income, profits, and capital gains. The study conducted preliminary tests, including descriptive statistics, correlation matrix, and pooled least square estimations for panel data. Based on the results, all macroeconomic determinants have statistically significant effects on GDP except trade. Tax revenue and corporate tax rate positively affect GDP, while personal income tax rate and tax on income, profit, and capital gain negatively affect GDP. In general, taxation has a favorable effect on the economy of African countries because emerging countries use taxation as an internal key to generate revenue and improve economic growth.

Abstract

End-stage kidney disease (ESKD) is a global health challenge, with kidney transplantation being the preferred treatment. However, due to a shortage of donor organs and medical complications, many patients rely on dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is a promising alternative but is underused compared to hemodialysis (HD). This study explores whether PD could be considered a first-line treatment for ESKD, using a SWOT analysis to assess its strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Method Systematic literature review (2015–2025) with SWOT framework. PD improves patients' quality of life with treatment flexibility and better preservation of kidney function. However, the risk of infection such as peritonitis is a weakness in the widespread use of PD therapy in the elderly and remote areas. The development of PD use requires government support in equalizing the distribution of healthcare professionals skilled in PD and providing reasonable cost reimbursement. PD has the potential to be an effective first-line treatment for ESKD, but its widespread use is constrained by various challenges. Addressing these barriers could enhance its accessibility and efficacy.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the key determinants of crude death rates (CDR) in selected Countries within Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America, emphasising statistical correlations, policy implications, and regional disparities. Using econometric analysis, the study finds that increased life expectancy, higher government healthcare expenditure, and GDP per capita growth significantly reduce mortality rates. Labour force participation and access to potable water further influence mortality trends. However, African and some Asian nations experience higher CDRs due to weak healthcare infrastructure and economic constraints. The findings underscore the need for sustained investment in healthcare systems, human capital development, and policy-driven interventions to mitigate mortality risks and improve public health. This study provides empirical evidence to guide policymakers in designing targeted health policies that enhance healthcare equity and long-term health outcomes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of household catastrophic health expenditure incidents and household characteristics on household multidimensional poverty status in Java Island, Indonesia. The study was conducted quantitatively inferentially based on IFLS 5 data in 2014 obtained from Susenas totaling 8,458 households. The data analysis used logistic regression with ordered logit model. The results of the study revealed that households experiencing catastrophic health expenditure increasingly tend to experience multidimensional poverty. Household characteristics such as the number of family members and the number of toddlers that are getting bigger can also increase this tendency. However, it is different from the level of education and location of residence which can reduce the tendency of households to experience multidimensional poverty.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of Regional Expenditure, Local Own-Source Revenue, and Investment on Economic Growth in East Java Province during 2018–2023. This research used a quantitative approach with annual time series secondary data. The data were obtained from official publications of Statistics Indonesia, the Directorate General of Fiscal Balance, and the Investment Coordinating Board. The data analysis technique used multiple linear regression with SPSS, including descriptive statistics, classical assumption tests, t-test, F-test, and coefficient of determination. The results show that Regional Expenditure, Local Own-Source Revenue, and Investment partially have no significant effect on Economic Growth in East Java Province. Simultaneously, the three variables also have no significant effect on Economic Growth. However, the R-Square value of 0.550 indicates that Regional Expenditure, Local Own-Source Revenue, and Investment explain 55% of the variation in Economic Growth, while the remaining 45% is influenced by other factors outside the research model.

Abstract

The program distributing rice for reducing poverty for poor household (also known as Raskin) is one of social safety net programs in Indonesian’s government with its subsidized rice to the poor. The purpose of this program is to lessen the financial burden of the targeted households and increase food sustainability at the household level. This paper’s aim is to investigate how the effect of in-kind transfer towards the Raskin program over the household’s budgets proportion. This study used Indonesia Family Life Survey (IFLS) data wave 3 (2000) and wave 4 (2007), with the households level as unit analysis. Estimation strategy is applying regression with data panel in fixed effect model (FEM) and instrumental variable (IV). The result shows that the in-kind transfer program is not work for lessening the household’s burden, but in fact has increased the household expenditure, particularly for buying some food. It was found that during the program implementation, there was a significant increase in informal labor wages in Indonesia. Therefore, for typical household who experiencing higher wage income relatives to rice expenditure, will result in total budgets for rice will also increase significantly. In this case, we could conclude that rice is still being normal goods for Indonesia..
