Abstract

Newspaper advertising experienced a significant increase in the 1970s. During that period, three local daily newspapers were established in Medan: Waspada, Sinar Indonesia Baru, and Analisa. These newspapers displayed various advertisements in their publications, one of which was the advertisement to promote the film that would be shown in theaters at that time. In promoting films through these advertisements, many producers use women as a means of promotion. Women have their magnet to attract the audience's interest. This journal explains how women’s representation in the local daily newspaper advertisements in Medan in the 1970s and how the exploitation of women’s bodies and sexual attractiveness in the advertisements for the film's promotion was related to global discourse, especially in terms of women's appearance. The four stages of historical methods are applied to conduct the research: heuristics, verification, interpretation, and historiography. The research results show that advertising producers often showcased pictures of beautiful and sexy women and even displayed vulgar words to attract the audience's interest which didn't represent the storyline of the film itself.

Abstract

This study explores the synergistic relationship between triangulation and domain analysis and how their integration can improve the overall quality of qualitative research. Triangulation enhances trustworthiness by validating findings through comparisons of data collected from multiple sources, methods, or investigators. Meanwhile, domain analysis, rooted in ethnographic semantics, offers a systematic way to uncover the meaning and structure embedded in the validated data. When applied together, these two approaches enable researchers to generate findings that are both credible and rich in interpretation. Triangulation addresses issues of reliability and bias, ensuring that conclusions are supported by diverse evidence. Domain analysis then deepens understanding by identifying semantic relationships and constructing relevant cultural or conceptual domains directly from participants’ perspectives. This study employs a Narrative Literature Review method to synthesize theoretical and methodological insights, building a conceptual link between methodological rigor and interpretative depth. The results are expected to provide guidance for researchers in improving credibility, dependability, and confirmability in qualitative research. Overall, integrating triangulation and domain analysis offers a strong foundation for producing meaningful and trustworthy interpretations, thereby contributing to both methodological strengthening and theoretical development in qualitative inquiry.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore the process of dialect adaptation in Medan by migrants from Jakarta, particularly among students at the University of North Sumatra. Using a descriptive qualitative method with interviews and observations, the study found that the dialectal differences between Jakarta and Medan created communication barriers during initial interactions, especially in terms of vocabulary, accent, and pronoun usage. However, migrants from Jakarta gradually adapted to the local dialect through intense social interactions and efforts to adjust to local cultural norms. This adaptation process accelerated social integration and helped migrants build stronger relationships with the Medan community. The study also shows that language change reflects migrants' efforts to be accepted in the local community. Dialect adaptation is not just about communication but also about the formation of social identity and acceptance of local culture. The study concludes that despite initial barriers, dialect adaptation in Medan becomes a crucial strategy in the social acculturation process that allows migrants to be accepted into their new environment.

Abstract

ABSTRACT The rapid development of news media due to technology in Indonesia indicates the presence of panopticon practices within it. Therefore, this research aims to delve deeper into how the panopticon practice exists in media reporting and to find out whether every individual in society is actually monitored or free in their life due to this practice. This research is a descriptive qualitative study with literature review and digital observation as data collection methods. This research shows that out of the three news articles used as examples of panopticon practices in the media, two of them explain that every behavior and action of individuals in society will always be monitored, even in trivial private matters. Meanwhile, the remaining one explains that the media practices the panoptic method by instilling discipline through widespread reporting to the public regarding the behavior of individuals who oppose or do not conform to the system. The author concludes that the panoptic practice in the media shows constant surveillance of individuals in society, so individuals are actually not free and will always be monitored by news media. Abstract

The use of motorized pedicabs is vital in urban communities in Indonesia due to insufficient public transportation services. However, the rise of digital transportation services has marginalized their existence without support from the government and related parties. A field study in Medan, North Sumatra, involving motorized pedicab drivers revealed their experiences and efforts to continue providing alternative transportation services. This study highlighted the lack of other job options for these drivers and the socio-cultural reasons for sticking to their profession despite the increasing availability of digital transportation services. Additionally, they are making efforts to improve their services by organizing themselves and investing in their businesses.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze in depth the phenomenon of ageism experienced by young workers in the industrial sector. This issue is rarely discussed, as previous studies have tended to focus on age discrimination experienced by older people. Using a qualitative approach and case study design, this study examines experiences of ageism among workers aged between 25 and 35 years. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and research from written sources to strengthen the existing theoretical framework. Findings from this study indicate that ageism against young workers manifests in the form of discrimination during the recruitment process, negative stereotypes about their abilities and character, and seniority practices that make age an indication of authority and competence. Structural factors such as traditional work hierarchies and cultural norms regarding the age of marriage also reinforce these age discrimination practices. In terms of theory, this study contributes to expanding the understanding of ageism by emphasizing that age discrimination can occur not only against older workers but also against young workers, thus necessitating a more inclusive analytical framework. Empirically, the results of this study underscore the importance of policy interventions and improvements in work culture in order to create a more inclusive industrial environment that is free from age discrimination.

Abstract

The phenomenon of ”typing ganteng” on social media, particularly TikTok, demonstrates that constructions of masculinity can be shaped through digital language styles. This study aims to explore how the ”typing ganteng” style, popularized by influencers and content creators on TikTok, shapes representations of masculinity. The method used was descriptive qualitative content analysis, utilizing purposive data from TikTok accounts producing content related to this phenomenon. The results show that through ”typing ganteng” content, influencers can establish standards of digital masculinity, as evidenced by stylistic characteristics such as the use of lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences, prolonged vowels, concise typing, and controlled humor. This style of language is considered attractive and masculine by women on social media, encouraging other users to imitate and conform to established norms. Findings indicate that the concept of masculinity in the digital age has shifted from traditional norms to new forms displayed through written interactions on social media. This study demonstrates that language functions as a cultural product that continues to evolve according to social expectations, enabling young men to display and negotiate masculine identities online. The study also highlights that perceptions of masculinity are relative; some male users adopt “typing ganteng” styles to gain social recognition, while others view masculinity as more flexible and individual. This research is expected to enrich sociolinguistic research and provide deeper insights into the relationship between language, gender, and social media culture.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to understand how members of the Generasi Baru Indonesia XI Universitas Sumatera Utara (GenBI XI USU) community engage in social practices related to the implementation of a zero waste lifestyle. The research addresses the issue of high waste production in Medan City and explores how youth communities respond to environmental challenges through sustainable living. A qualitative approach with a phenomenological method was used to explore the subjective experiences of community members. Data were collected through participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation involving GenBI members who apply the 5R principles: refuse, reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot. The analysis was conducted using Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of social practice, focusing on the concepts of habitus, capital, and field. The findings reveal that the formation of a zero waste habitus is influenced by family experiences, educational environments, and community activities. Social, cultural, economic, and symbolic capitals significantly support the sustainability practices adopted by community members. Moreover, the zero waste lifestyle becomes a site of symbolic contestation within the community, allowing members to demonstrate environmental awareness and strengthen their identity as responsible youth. This study highlights the role of communities as agents of change in fostering ecological habits through the internalization of sustinable values and practices within their social fields.
