Abstract

This study was conducted to assess the English speaking proficiency of students. The students' English speaking achievement was abysmal. The aims of this study were to determine: (1) the extent of improvement in speaking skills with and without the use of the direct instructional strategy, and (2) whether there was a notable improvement in the speaking skills of students who received the direct instructional strategy compared to those who did not. This study employed quasi-experimental research methodology. A total of 16 students were selected as a sample, with 16 students assigned to the experimental class and another 16 students assigned to the control class. The data were gathered by the administration of an oral examination. The data were analysed using both paired sample t-tests and independent sample t-tests. Through data analysis, it was determined that there was a notable surge in pupils' proficiency in oral communication. The paired sample t-test yielded a t-test statistic of -28.428 and a significance value of 0.00, which was less than the predetermined significance level of α (0.05). This demonstrates an enhancement in students' oral communication abilities. Furthermore, the results of the independent sample t-test indicate that the calculated t-test value (-13.075) and the corresponding p-value (0.00) were both below the predetermined significance level (α) of 0.05. The results indicate a substantial disparity in the average speaking abilities of pupils who received teaching through the direct instruction technique compared to those who did not get such instruction.

Abstract

The low English proficiency level that faced by Indonesia is the problem highlighted in English First’s survey in 2023. This research is aimed at determining which factors influence students' motivation and learning attitudes toward English language learning, to generalize the motivation and attitude possessed by students in Palembang. This study used a cross-sectional survey design on non-English department students at four universities in Palembang, Indonesia. 427 participants were involved in this research from four sample universities in the population. The data was collected through quantitative method and using two distribution methods by online and offline. The data were presented in graphical form compared the mean value of motivational factors and attitudinal tendencies in English learning. The correlation test results between motivation and students' attitudes towards English learning showed a strong correlation. Several motivational interpretations lead to the conclusion that, according to this research, students had a higher predisposition to learn English integratively and had a positive attitude with a higher cognitive aspect tendency. The findings of this study are likely to assist numerous interested parties in improving and maintaining student learning achievement in English language learning

Abstract

Writing skills are a difficult challenge for many EFL students who have little exposure to real language outside the classroom. Therefore, this research aims to explore the influence of using Canva in teaching narrative text writing to LTI Indo Global Mandiri Middle School students in Palembang and their perceptions of using Canva. The research design used was a quasi-experimental design. The sample for this research was classes VIII.A and VIII.B which consisted of 20 students from class VIII.A and 19 students from class VIII.B. The research design used in this research is a quasi-experimental design. The sampling technique used is purposive sampling, namely selecting certain individuals who are believed to represent the population studied. Data collection was carried out by giving a pre-test and post-test, then analyzed using a t-test (paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test) with the help of the SPSS v.23 program. The results of this research show that the p-value from the paired sample t test of 0.000 is less than 0.05, which means there is a significant increase in students' writing skills after being taught using the Canva application. The results of this research show that the use of the Canva application as a learning media can improve the ability to write narrative texts for class VIII students at SMP LTI Indo Global Mandiri Palembang.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menyelidiki efektivitas penggunaan podcast untuk meningkatkan keterampilan ini di kalangan siswa kelas tujuh di SMP Xaverius Maria. Penelitian ini melibatkan 62 siswa yang dibagi menjadi kelompok eksperimen dan kelompok kontrol yang masing-masing terdiri dari 31 siswa. Kelompok eksperimen menerima pengajaran berbasis podcast, sedangkan kelompok kontrol mengikuti kurikulum standar. Analisis data meliputi skor rata-rata, penghitungan n-gain, dan uji reliabilitas antar penilai, menggunakan SPSS. Hasil Penelitian Rerata skor post-test untuk pemahaman mendengarkan pada kelompok eksperimen adalah 81,58, dibandingkan dengan rata-rata pre-test sebesar 66,61, mencerminkan perbedaan rata-rata sebesar 14,97. Nilai t sebesar -10,25 (p < 0,001) menunjukkan peningkatan keterampil an mendengarkan yang signifikan. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa podcast adalah alat yang efektif untuk pembelajaran bahasa, menawarkan pengalaman mendengarkan yang menarik dan otentik yang meningkatkan pengembangan keterampilan secara keseluruhan. Peningkatan signifikan pada kinerja kelompok eksperimen menggaris bawahi potensi pengintegrasian podcast ke dalam pendidikan bahasa Inggris. Podcast dapat secara signifikan meningkatkan keterampilan mendengarkan dan berbicara dalam pendidikan bahasa.

Abstract

Reading is very prominent to obtain information and influence the learning success. Based on survey results from the last five years, Indonesia has a low level of reading interest. Therefore, the aims of this study were to find out the use of Quantum Thinker Teaching Model in reading comprehension achievement for seventh grade students at SMP Negeri 22 Palembang and the experimental group students’ perception of the use Quantum Thinker Teaching Model. This study used quasi experimental design with the sample were class of VII.2 and VII.6 that consisted of 33 students in each class, and divided into the experimental and control groups. Therefore, the data were collected by using pre-test, and post-test, that analyzed by using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test with help of SPSS version 27 program. Based on the results of this study, (1) there was significant improvement on students’ reading level category, (2) there was significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension achievement, (3) there was significant improvement in students’ reading aspects, (4) and there was significant mean difference between experimental and control groups. (5) Moreover, the experimental students gave positive perception toward the use of Quantum Thinker Teaching Model in teaching process. In conclusion, the use of Quantum Thinker Teaching Model was improved students’ reading comprehension achievement for seventh grade students.

Abstract

This research investigated the grammatical error of students’ translation Indonesian descriptive text into English is taught to eighth-grade pupils at Tri Dharma Palembang Junior High School. This study sample was conducted using descriptive qualitative research methods. The data were collected by using documentation and test as the instrument. There would be 10 participants of this research; they are the greatest students in English in the class according to the result of try out. The research finding showed that the 0% error for run-on sentence, 1% errors for omission, 1% errors for incomplete sentence, 1% errors for word form, 1% errors for punctuation, 2% errors for addition, 3% errors for spelling, 4% errors for word order, 7% errors for verb tense, 8% errors for article, 9% errors for word choice, 13% error for singular or plural, 22% errors for capitalization, and 28% errors for meaning not clear. Based on the result of students’ translation, it showed that student made the highest error in meaning not clear which needed to practice more how to use the right word based on the context from the source language and Grammar errors were created by students due to their lack of knowledge about English part of speech. made in translating descriptive text.

Abstract

One of the obstacles to the learning process was the lack of interest in reading in students, especially in English texts. The design used in this study is Pre-Experimental with a sample of VIII.A consisting of 40 students. This study used pretest and post-test to collect data, which were analyzed using paired sample t-test with the help of SPSS version 23. Based on the results of this study, (1) there was a significant increase in students' reading comprehension achievement, (2) students gave a positive perception of the use of the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) method on reading comprehension skills of descriptive text in the learning process. In conclusion, the use of the Two Stay Two Stray (TSTS) method on reading comprehension skills of descriptive text can improve reading comprehension achievement of students in class VIII.

Abstract

This research was based on students’ English speaking achievement at school during the 2024/2025 academic year, thus the students’ English speaking achievement was pathetic. Speaking is very important in language learning because it helps students acquire the target language and academic content. English teachers try to use the spying method to help students improve their speaking skills. The spying method uses spies to gather information, in order to support and increase students' confidence in their English language skills Thus, the objectives of this study were to find out: (1) significant improvement in speaking skills using or not using the Spying method and (2) whether there were significant mean difference between the students’ who are taught.. Quasi-experiment research was used in this study. There were 69 students as a sample, 35 students for the experimental class and 34 students for the control class. The data were collected using a speaking test. Data were analyzed using paired sample t-test and independent sample t-test. Based on data analysis, it was found that there was a significant increase in students' speaking skills. Before being proven by the t- test results of the paired sample with the t-test obtained (-26.998) and the significance value (0.00) was lower than α (0.05). That shows that students' speaking skills have been improved. In addition, the independent sample t-test results show that the obtained t-test (12.342) and significant value (<.001) was lower than α (0.05). The results shows significant mean difference in students' speaking achievement between students who were taught by using spying method and those who were not taught.

Abstract

Lemahnya penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris yang dimiliki siswa-siswi Sekolah Dasar disebabkan oleh banyak faktor, diantaranya keterbatasan kesempatan belajar dan pengunaan metode pengajaran yang kurang tepat. Hal seperti ini terjadi di banyak sekolah di Indonesia, tidak terkecuali SD Mataram Palembang. Dalam observasi yang dilakukan sebelum pelaksanaan kegiatan pengabdian, penulis penulis menemukan peserta didik di SD Mataram Palembang memiliki eksposur yang sangat rendah terhadap Bahasa Inggris. Peserta didik memiliki kosakata yang terbatas namun di sisi lain mereka memiliki rasa ingin tahu yang sangat tinggi untuk menguasai bahasa Inggris. Program pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan proses peningkatan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa sekolah dasar melalui metode Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL) pada siswa SD Mataram Palembang. Kegiatan ini dilaksanakan selama 12 pertemuan dengan 44 siswa dari berbagai tingkatan kelas 4-6 Sekolah Dasar yang menjadi sampel. Pengunaan tes dan wawancara menjadi instrumen dalam mengukur tingkat keberhasilan dari kegiatan ini. Adapun komponen test yang diukur adalah cara pengucapan yang benar, artikulasi yang baik dan intonasi yang tepat. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukan bahwa metode CTL ini mampu meningkatkan jumlah kosakata bahasa Inggris dengan mudah dan relevan. Sedangkan dari sudut pandang siswa ditemukan bahwa metode CTL ini dapat menciptakan atmosfir belajar yang aktif. Di masa akan datang, kegiatan pengabdian seperti ini dianjurkan untuk tetap dilaksanakan.

Abstract

This study investigated by the low vocabulary levels of fourth-grade students at IGM Elementery School Palembang, which leads to difficulties in reading comprehension and effective communication. The aim of this research was to examine the effectiveness of using nursery rhymes to improve students' vocabulary. The research design used in this study was Classroom Action Research (CAR). The sample of this research was class of IV B consisted of 24 students. The data were gathered through qualitative and quantitative data. Based on the result of this research showed that there was a development on the students’ vocabulary mastery, it can be seen from the mean score of pretests were 63.8, the mean score of posttest cycle 1 was 73.6 and the mean score of posttest cycle 2 was 91.7. In addition, there were 9 students (37.5%) who passed minimum mastery criterion in the pretest. Meanwhile, in cycle 1, there were 13 students (54.1%) who passed minimum mastery criterion, and it gained which was in the posttest cycle 2 there were 24 students (100%) who passed minimum mastery criterion, so the criteria of success were achieved. Then, from the result of observation indicated increased student activity and participant in the teaching-learning process during the implementation of nursery rhymes.
