Abstract

This study was motivated by several problems, such as the mismatch between the test questions and the material learned, unclear question instructions, and the lack of statistical analysis by English teachers. The main objective of this study was to identify the quality of English midterm test items for grade 7th students at SMPN 7 Bukittinggi, focusing on Validity, Reliability, difficulty level, Discrimination Power, and Distractor Effectiveness. The research method used was Quantitative Descriptive, with data collection through student answer sheets and analysis using various statistical formulas, including Point Biserial Correlation for validity, Spearman-Brown for reliability, and Narsya's formula for difficulty level and differentiating power, as well as Djumingin's formula for effectiveness. The results showed that most of the items were valid, and reliable, had a moderate difficulty level, and had good discriminating power, with only a few items showing minor problems. Overall, the English midterm exam items were considered good quality.

Abstract

This study was conducted to address the issues observed in SMPN 30 Sijunjung. The identified issues were students' tendency to complan. when the teacher did not provide further explanation in Bahasa during audio activities, difficulty in comprehending native speakers due to their fast pace, lack of focus during video or movie-based listening activities, and confusion regarding certain vocabulary. The aim of this research is to compare the effectiveness of using video and audio as media in students' listening comprehension.A quantitative research approach was utilized in this study. The design was comparative with VIII.1 and VIII.2 as the sample classes, each taught using either video or audio. The data was collected through a listening test.Based on the data gathered from the eighth grade students of SMPN 30 Sijunjung, it was concluded that there is no significant difference in the overall scores of students' listening comprehension when using video or audio. However, the findings showed variations in specific listening skills, with the video group performing better in distinguishing sounds and the audio group excelling in decoding verbal messages. Additionally, both groups had similar levels of ability in perceiving and retaining the entire message. These results suggest that both video and audio can equally facilitate students' listening comprehension.

Abstract

This research related to the factors that influence of students achievement in the course schedule (Morning and afternoon). According to some experts, studied in the morning was more effective than in the afternoon and made the students achievement in the morning better than studied in the afternoon. However, based on the fact found in SMP N 12 Solok Selatan in seventh grade, it showed that average score students' English achievements were almost same between students who studied English in the morning and afternoon. Therefore, the researcher wanted to find out the factors causing there was no difference in students' English achievement results between morning and afternoon classes. Qualitative descriptive was the design in this research. Researcher used observation and interviews as the instrumentation. Seventh grade at SMPN 12 Solok Selatan as informants. To analyze the data, the researcher used the theory of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Based on research results, the factors that make students English achievement the same were external factors, namely teacher and lesson standard. The teachers treatment and the way she taught was the same to all students, but when the teacher taught in the afternoon the teacher carried out several activities that made students re-focused and enthusiastic in learning, such as ice breaking and made joked with students. In conclusion, how the teachers taught both in the way they present the material and their creativity in creating learning condition that still conducive at all times, and also how the teachers attitude to students.
