Abstract

This study attempts to identify the causes and dominant factors that hinder the development of cash waqf in Indonesia, using the IFE-EFE Matrix and SWOT methods, while offering solutions to solve it. Based on the results of IFE analysis, the highest-rank of strengths is the ability of cash waqf in expanding the base of waqf fund sources followed by the ease and zero cost of funds. In comparison, the top weaknesses are the lack of socialisation to the community and the lack of professional nazhir human resources. The results of EFE analysis imply the highest-rank opportunity is the potential of unlimited cash waqf followed by the emergence of many sharia financial institutions and Islamic economics study programs in universities. Meanwhile, the top threat is a weak political will of authorities, followed by the majority of traditional nazhir. It is expected that there will be a joint commitment from various parties, both from policymakers and academics and practitioners to support and encourage efforts to develop the Islamic (social) finance industry, especially in developing cash waqf in Indonesia.

Abstract

This article seeks to reveal the religious experiences of the members of the Tarekat Qadiriyah wa Naqsyabandiyah (TQN) in Suryalaya, Tasikmalaya, West Java. Using a phenomenological approach, this article finds that TQN followers exhibit religious awareness and obedience to legal norms, reflected in various ritual practices, such as dhikr (remembrance), khataman (completing the reading of the Qur’ān), manakiban (reciting the saint’s hagiography), riyāḍah (spiritual exercises), tawassul (mediating), and ḥajj (pilgrimage). The religious awareness is built upon the belief in achieving good morality as the attribute of a perfect man (insān kāmil). The socio-structural diversity of the TQN community in social life is manifested in the complexity of hierarchies involved in the tarekat system: murshid (spiritual leader); representatives of talqīn which include intellectuals/modernist, ulama/ traditionalist, scholar/neo-traditionalist; preachers from the realms of pesantren, university, and politics. This article argues that the relationship between different hierarchies of membership in the TQN with regard to religious awareness is based on the understanding of the tarekat teaching provided by the spiritual leader.

Abstract

This study attempts to analyze the productivity level of Takaful industry in Indonesia, both in terms of changes of its efficiency and also its technological. There are two things that are calculated in Malmquist index measurement that is catch-up effect and frontier shift effect. Findings from the results are very interesting. The average value of the overall efficiency of Takaful industry in Indonesia is relatively medium at 77.8%, while the mean standard deviation is 0.17. This indicates the enough good performance of Takaful industry in Indonesia. In general, there has been an increase in the level of productivity of Takaful institutions in Indonesia in the period 2016 to 2018, even though its very small. The increase in productivity growth (1.076) of Takaful institutions in Indonesia is generally caused by technological change (1.078) instead of changes in efficiency (0.998). Thus the service of Takaful institutions is needed which is more innovative in relation to the development of technology in the future.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the level of efficiency of Islamic boarding schools cooperatives as well as potential improvements needed, and to compare the efficiency of Islamic boarding schools cooperatives. In addition, this research also looks at the efficiency of Islamic boarding school cooperatives during the Covid-19 pandemic. The research period used in this research is from 2014-2021 with a research sample of 2 Islamic boarding schools cooperatives. The analytical method used is a non-parametric approach, namely Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), with secondary data sources originating from the financial reports of Islamic boarding schools cooperatives as the research sample. Furthermore, the input variables used are fixed assets, mandatory savings and principal savings. The output variable consists of SHU and deposits in other bodies. The results of this study indicate that the efficiency of Islamic boarding school cooperatives during the 2014-2021 period has fluctuated from year to year. Based on the level of efficiency, the Islamic boarding school cooperative B has a higher efficiency compared to the Islamic boarding school cooperative A. Then in the analysis of efficiency during the pandemic, the efficiency of the Islamic boarding school A cooperative tends to be relatively stable. Meanwhile, the pesantren B cooperative showed a significant increase in 2021, even though it experienced a decline in the 2020 period. And based on analysispotential improvement, the biggest cause of inefficiency in pesantren A cooperative comes from the input variable, namely SHU, and in pesantren B cooperative is fixed assets. This research also provides recommendations to cooperatives to further increase their efficiency, for regulators, it is expected to provide full support to Islamic boarding schools cooperatives, and for academics to update this research in line with research limitations.
