Abstract

Timely graduation in professional dental education is an indicator of clinical learning success and the development of student competencies; however, delayed graduation remains common across dental faculties in Indonesia, influenced by both internal and external factors. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to delayed graduation among professional-stage dental students at YARSI University Faculty of Dentistry using a descriptive qualitative approach with a phenomenological design. Data were collected through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with students and in-depth interviews with academic staff and program administrators, followed by thematic analysis. Results indicated that internal factors included learning motivation, psychological condition, clinical skills, communication abilities, and time management, while external factors encompassed patient availability and compliance, faculty policies and discipline, clinic service management, infrastructure, and curriculum regulations, with complex interactions between internal and external factors affecting clinical education progress. In conclusion, delayed graduation among professional-stage dental students is influenced by a combination of internal factors such as motivation, psychological condition, clinical self-confidence, communication skills, and time management, as well as external factors including inconsistent faculty supervision, clinic service systems, requirement policies, patient availability, and financial burdens.

Abstract

Background: Dental and oral health is an important part of general health that plays a role in supporting quality of life. Low levels of knowledge about dental and oral health care are still one of the causes of high rates of dental caries among school-age children in Indonesia. Objective: This study aims to determine and compare the level of knowledge about dental and oral health among elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school students at Sekolah Alam Cikeas (SAC). Methods: This study used a quantitative descriptive research design with a cross-sectional approach using a questionnaire instrument. The study sample consisted of 60 students, comprising 20 elementary students, 20  junior high school students, and 20  senior high school students of Sekolah Alam Cikeas. The questionnaire contained 30 questions covering three aspects, namely knowledge about brushing teeth, diet, and dental health check-ups at the dentist. Data analysis was performed descriptively by grouping knowledge categories into good, moderate, and poor. Results: The results showed that the majority of students at all levels of education had a good level of knowledge. Knowledge about brushing teeth showed a good percentage of 90% among elementary school students and 100% among junior high and high school students. Knowledge about diet was in the good category with a percentage of 90% among elementary and junior high school students and 95% among high school students. Knowledge about dental health control showed variation, namely 70% in the good category among elementary school students, 65% among junior high school students, and 90% among high school students. Conclusion: There is a tendency for an increase in the level of dental and oral health knowledge along with increasing levels of education. Knowledge about dental health control still needs to be improved, especially among elementary and junior high school students.

Abstract

Study environment became the factors triggering the anxiety, stress, and depression among students. During the COVID-19 restriction (2020-2022), the teaching and learning activities were shifted from campus to online class affecting the student’s mental state. The objectives of this study are to explore the factors that possibly contributed to anxiety, stress, and depression to pre-clinical and clinical students of YARSI Dentistry Faculty. The research was a cross-sectional study with the Stratified Random Sampling with the total of 425 both pre-clinical and clinical students of YARSI Dentistry Faculty. The total of 266 students (188 pre-clinical and 76 clinical) became the sample in this study with DASS (Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale) questionnaire with Google Form. We utilized the Logistic Regression Binomial for statistical analysis to estimate OR and find the predictors. The marriage status, housing, and length of study were considerably major predictor for anxiety, stress, and depression among students in DASS measurements. In multivariate analysis, renting accommodation was a considerable contributor for anxiety (AOR = 5.34 (3.1-9.41)) than living with family. Similarly, renting accommodation also affected both stress (AOR = 5.34 (3.1-9.41)) and depression (AOR = 6.57 (3.19-9.41)). In addition, length of study was possible a predictor (AOR = 1.79 (1.04-3.1)). The Study environment and social condition were possible contributing to mental state of students during COVID-19 restriction. The psychological assistances are considered important for students during COVID-19 restriction, especially the students with renting accommodation and studying more than 3 years.
