Abstract

This study examines the professionalism of nâzir waqf (endownment administrators) at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor (PMDG) in Islamic Boarding School located in Gontor, Ponorogo, West Java, in managing waqf assets. The goal is to obtain an overview of how Islamic principles are applied as a standard of professionalism in waqf governance to improve the community’s economic welfare. This study uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. Data were collected through direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentation, applying the triangulation method to ensure data validity. Data analysis follows the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing or verifying conclusions. The results of the study show that although the modern professionalism framework often adopts Western professionalism indicators, in fact, long before the emergence of Western theories, Islam already had the same concept rooted in ‘amal (action), itqân (diligence), and ihsân (goodness). These concepts differ both epistemologically and axiologically. A professional nâzir at PMDG is expected to embody the qualities of shiddîq (honesty), amânah (trustworthiness), tablîgh (effective communication), and fatânah (intelligence). He is also expected to act as a manager, administrator, evaluator, leader, supervisor, innovator, and motivator. This study offers a theory-and practice-based model of waqf management professionalism for developing Islamic philanthropic institutions that align governance practices with sharia principles and modern management standards.

Abstract

This study examines the dynamics of social capital within an Islamic business community of pesantren alumni, using the Forum Bisnis (FORBIS) of the Ikatan Alumni Pondok Modern (IKPM) Yogyakarta as a case study. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that bonding social capital among FORBIS members is exceptionally strong, shaped by pesantren values such as brotherhood (ukhuwah), discipline, and internal trust. However, this bonding strength has not been effectively transformed into bridging or linking social capital. Key obstacles include psychological factors (feelings of hesitation and inferiority), cultural factors (conservative interpretations of adab), structural barriers (the absence of formal mechanisms for external relations), and the limited readiness of members’ businesses to enter formal networks. Consequently, social capital remains concentrated at the internal level and has not yet functioned as a strategic resource for expanding market access, partnerships, or institutional collaboration. This study highlights the need to strengthen organizational structures, develop business incubation programs, and establish linking mechanisms utilizing senior alumni networks to enhance the productive conversion of social capital within FORBIS and support the development of Islamic business ecosystems.

Abstract

The intensifying competition within the banking industry has driven institutions to adopt strategies that not only focus on profitability but also uphold sustainability values. Among these initiatives, green banking; representing a form of green investment within the Islamic financial framework; has become a key approach. This study investigates how green banking practices, and the number of ATMs affect the profitability of Islamic commercial banks in Indonesia, using Return on Assets (ROA) as the performance measure for the 2019–2024 period. Using a quantitative approach, the research applies panel data regression with a Fixed Effect Model (FEM). The results reveal that green banking practices do not have a significant impact on bank profitability. Although theory suggests a positive correlation, the empirical results reveal that its contribution to improving ROA remains unproven, likely due to its limited and long-term implementation stage. Similarly, the number of ATM units shows no significant effect and even tends to negatively affect profitability, possibly because of high operational expenses and customers’ growing shift toward digital banking services. Despite the insignificant short-term impact, the incorporation of environmentally friendly banking measures by Islamic banks represents an essential step toward incorporating environmentally responsible financing and energy efficiency. This approach holds promising potential to enhance the sustainability, reputation, and competitiveness of Islamic banks in the long term.

Abstract

Globalization and modernization have posed serious challenges to the character development of students, particularly children and adolescents. This condition highlights the need for strengthening character education that is not merely cognitive but also practical and sustainable. This Community Service Program (PkM) aimed to build students’ character through the internalization of pesantren values, particularly the core values of Panca Jiwa Pesantren, at Tahfidz Arabic Al-Gontory Banin Islamic Boarding School, Bukit Hijau, Rembau, Malaysia. The program employed a community engagement approach through intensive mentoring activities, including Islamic studies sessions, regular lectures, workshops, habituation of daily pesantren activities, and active involvement of students and teachers throughout the program. The participants consisted of students aged 8–15 years and pesantren educators. The results demonstrated positive changes in students’ attitudes and behavior, reflected in increased religious awareness, the practice of a simple lifestyle, the development of self-reliance, strengthened Islamic brotherhood, and the growth of students’ interests and talents in a more directed and responsible manner. This program concludes that the internalization of pesantren values based on Panca Jiwa is effective as a character education model in a tahfidz Islamic boarding school environment and has the potential to be implemented in similar Islamic educational institutions, particularly in international contexts
