Abstract

Abstract

Head lice infestation (Pediculosis capitis) remains a global public health concern, exacerbated by growing resistance to conventional pediculicides such as permethrin and malathion. This study aimed to evaluate the pediculicidal activity and formulation stability of a topical cream containing Annona squamosa (sugar apple or srikaya) seed extract as a natural alternative for treating pediculosis. The ethanolic extract of A. squamosa seeds was obtained through maceration, producing a 10.005% yield. Pediculicidal assays were conducted using various extract concentrations (5%, 7.5%, and 10%), followed by formulation of oil-in-water creams with extract concentrations of 7.5%, 10%, and 12.5%. Physical stability tests included assessments of viscosity, pH, spreadability, adhesion, and homogeneity. Results showed a dose–response relationship, with lice mortality increasing from 60% at 5% extract to 87% at 10%. Extract. The formulated creams demonstrated high efficacy—86% to 96% mortality—comparable to 1% permethrin. All formulations maintained acceptable physicochemical properties (pH 4.8–5.5, viscosity within 27,000–47,000 cps) and remained stable after accelerated storage. These findings indicate that A. squamosa seed extract is a potent pediculicidal agent that can be effectively incorporated into a stable topical formulation. The study supports the potential of A. squamosa as a safe, sustainable, and plant-based alternative for managing pediculosis while addressing the challenge of chemical resistance.

Abstract

Cervical cancer remains a major cause of cancer-related mortality among women worldwide. Cisplatin is a first-line chemotherapeutic agent, but its use is limited by resistance and dose-dependent toxicity. This study evaluated the cytotoxic interaction between cisplatin and Eclipta alba extract in HeLa cervical cancer cells. Ethanolic maceration yielded 17.38 g of extract, corresponding to 10.22%. Thin-layer chromatographic screening indicated flavonoids, coumarins, and triterpenoid saponins, while LC–MS/MS tentatively identified eclalbasaponin I, wedelolactone, pinoquercetin, luteolin, and quercitrin. Cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTT assay. The IC₅₀ values were 1.15 ± 0.16 µg/mL for cisplatin and 598.29 ± 42.89 µg/mL for the extract. Under fixed sub-IC₅₀ cisplatin conditions, 0.42 µg/mL, the extract IC₅₀ decreased to 64.97 ± 5.41 µg/mL. Combination index values below 1 suggested synergistic interaction under fixed-dose conditions, indicating a potential dose-sparing strategy requiring further validation.

Abstract

Adequate drug availability at primary health centers (Puskesmas) is a key indicator of effective drug management and may be influenced by the knowledge of drug management officers. This study aimed to examine the relationship between officers’ knowledge and drug availability at selected Puskesmas in Makassar City. A descriptive analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted on May 16–17, 2025, at Paccerakkang, Mamajang, Pattingalloang, and Mangasa Puskesmas, which were selected using cluster random sampling. All eligible drug management officers were included through total sampling, resulting in seven respondents. Knowledge was assessed using a 20-item questionnaire with excellent reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0.9675), while drug availability was evaluated using 2024 Drug Usage and Request Reports (LPLPO) for 40 indicator drugs. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and Pearson’s correlation test. The mean knowledge score was 90%, categorized as good; six respondents had good knowledge and one had sufficient knowledge. Drug availability varied across facilities: one Puskesmas was categorized as good (69.87%), while three were categorized as sufficient, with an average availability of 46.29%. Pearson’s correlation showed no significant relationship between officers’ knowledge and drug availability (r = -0.853; p = 0.147). These findings suggest that drug availability is likely influenced more by procurement policies, distribution systems, and health budget allocation than by officers’ knowledge alone.
