Abstract

This study aims to investigate the Queen Elizabeth death metaphors in BBC and The Guardian. As an influential person, the death of Queen Elizabeth plays a significant role in the British public event. Then, it is essential to research how death metaphors are built in two famous online news. This research is a corpus-based study, and the source data obtained from news publishing about the queen's death. The data collected is approximately one month of the news after the queen's death. BBC consisted of 449.573-word tokens, and 519.773-word tokens was contained in The Guardian and the total of word tokens were 969,346. The conceptual metaphor theory by Lakoff and Johnson (1980) is used to identify the death metaphors. The result of this study is that all the death metaphors in BBC and The Guardian show the same concept. It means both online news had a similar cognitive view of the queen's death. The source domain is about spectacle, journey, end, ending of the journey, rest, and departure. The death metaphor is familiar in human life affected by experimental bases. In contrast, funeral metaphors are uncommon and strongly influenced by the social setting when publishing the news.

Abstract

This research aimed to describe (1) the form and function of Javanese particles in English conversations; and explained the factors behind the occurrence of language interference through the addition of Javanese particles to English conversations by students at the Fadhlul Fadhlan Islamic boarding school in Semarang. This research included field research with a qualitative approach and was presented descriptively. The data for this research was in the form of oral speech from the data source of students at the Fadhlul Fadhlan Islamic Boarding School when they were in the Islamic boarding school environment. The data collection technique method used non-participant observation by observing students' conversations and then taking notes and structured interviews with 27 students. The data analysis technique method used three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation, and concluding. The interference theory by weinrich is to identify the interference phenomena. The results of this research showed that there were two types of Javanese particles added by students in English conversations, namely the single Javanese particles and the combination of Javanese particles. The second result was there were two forms of interference were found, namely grammatical interference and lexical interference. Third, the factors that caused interference through the addition of particles were internal factors in the form of bilingualism, lack of mastery of English grammar and vocabulary, and being carried away by mother tongue habits. Furthermore, external factors were the environment, facilitating communication between students, situations, and conditions

Abstract

This research aims to describe the linguistics form, meaning, and functions under the phenomenon of English language variation used by Indonesian photography enthusiasts. The influence of the English register in lexical categories mostly has undergone a shift in meaning. So, the analysis of English register in the photography context is fascinating to be examined. The method of this research is qualitative descriptive with a sociolinguistics approach. The data are restricted to words and phrases taken from the daily posting of the Facebook community group. The procedure of data collection was conducted by observing and noting the English register among photography enthusiasts. The data were analyzed based on the formation process, the contextual meaning, and identifying the functions and sociolinguistics aspects. This research revealed that the use of English as a foreign language in the conversation of Indonesian photography enthusiasts was largely formed in a 'word' that represent an intended meaning without explain it in a long way. Those terms are functioned to tell the information, experiences, facts, techniques in photography. The involvement of English in the photography register was assumed because several terms do not have equivalent sense in Indonesian language, so it better to use them in English. This research has also showed that the intention of using English in photography community as the characteristics to labeling their social identity, also increasing the speaker's social value, particularly in creating feelings of pride and prestige.

Abstract

Bengkulu Malay language began to be put away and displaced by other languages so efforts were needed to preserve the language in order to survive. The first step was to take measurements through language life force assessment based on the Level Endangerment Index (LEI). The purpose of this research was to identify the form of language shift, analyze the level of language vitality, and explore language defense strategies as an effort to preserve the Bengkulu Malay language. This research used Level Endangerment Index theory, language shift, and language preservation. The methods used in this research were anthropology and sociolinguistics through interviews, questionnaires, observation, and study literature. Data analysis was carried out with sequential explanatory mixed method including Level Endangerment Index assessment, data reduction, data serving, data verification, and conclusion. The result of this research was the form of Bengkulu Malay language shift in the form of code switching and code mixing. Language shift spreads through community, style of language, and vocabularies in families, educational institutions, and immigrant neighborhood. Bengkulu Malay language vitality is 44% which means endangered. Language preservation efforts are carried out by involving the government, the Customary Council, and the community.

Abstract

This research aims to find out the politeness strategies used by the participants for stating the disagreement and to disclose the stereotypes about women being more polite than men or not. The data source for this research was obtained from the disagreement statements performed by female and male participants in one of the Vice Debates’ episodes entitled Parents, Teachers & Students Debate the US Education System. The qualitative method was used to describe the differences in politeness strategies performed by women and men participants. This research found 37 politeness strategies used by all participants. Men participants produced 24 disagreement statements which contained 3 types of politeness strategies, which are bald-on record, positive politeness, and negative politeness. Positive politeness became the highest strategy used by men participants, it convinced the stereotype that men do not use an emotional approach when responding to the interlocutor is not necessarily true. On the contrary, female participants only delivered 13 disagreement statements but used all of the politeness strategies, which are bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record. Negative politeness became the highest type and it reassures women do not always use long-winded talk when stating the disagreement.
