Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is a country that has very abundant natural resources (Summa, 2019), one of which is by having various types of plants that have properties for traditional medicine (Adiyasa & Meiyanti, 2021). For this reason, Indonesian people are very interested in traditional medicines because the plant-based ingredients are easy to get, easy to mix, and also very affordable prices (Widaryanto & Azizah, 2018). Jamblang fruit (Syzygium cumini L.) is one of the tropical fruits that can be used as medicine to treat various diseases. Jamblang fruit can be found in Australia, Tropical Asia, and Indonesia. Jamblang or duwet fruit is a plant that belongs to the Myrthacceae family, all parts starting from fruit, leaves, seeds of jamblang fruit can be used as traditional medicine (Katiyar et al., 2016). The jamblang fruit itself has several ingredients in it, including high levels of flavonoids, alkaloids, resins, tannins, and also essential oils so that the jamblang fruit is very beneficial for health. The jamblang seeds contain gallic acid, ellagic acid, corilagen, 3,6-hexahydroxy diphenoylglucose, 1-galloylyglucose, 3galloylyglucose, quercetin, β-sitostero, quercetin kaempferol, myricetin, and genin (Jagetia, 2017). Whereas jamblang leaves themselves contain acylated flavonol glycosides, triterpenoids, tannins, quercetin, myricetin, myricitin, myricetin 3-O-4-acetyl-Lrhamnopyranoside, esterase, and galloyl carboxylase (Kumawat et al., 2018). For this reason, the compounds contained in jamun fruit make jamblang fruit a plant that has properties as antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antioxidant, hypoallergenic, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, and also antipyretic (LPPM Biopharma Study Center, IPB & Gagas Ulung, 2014)

Abstract

Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is one of the microorganisms that cause infectious diseases of the skin. Jamblang leaves (Syzygium cumini (L) Skeels) contain bioactive compounds with antibacterial potential such as alkoloids, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and tannins. The purpose of this study was to analyze the antibacterial activity of extracts and solid soap preparations from ethanol extracts of jamblang leaves that have potential as antibacterial Staphylococcus aureus. Method: jamblang leaf simplisia powder was macerated with 70% ethanol solvent, thick extract of jamblang leaf was tested for antibacterial activity inhibition using disc diffusion method. Solid soap preparations were made with three concentrations of jamblang leaf extract addition, namely F1 (5%), F2 (6.25%) and F3 (7.5%). The results showed that the solid soap of 70% ethanol extract of jamblang leaves can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus bacteria at all three concentrations. Formulation 1 (5%) solid soap has an inhibition zone of 6.93mm ± 0.85, Formulation 2 (6.25%) 8.61mm ± 0.99 and Formulation 3 (7.5%) 11.2mm ± 1.90. This study can be concluded that the three formulations can inhibit Staphylococcus aureus bacteria.

Abstract

The Jamblang flower is a part of the plant that rarely gets attention in the process of exploring its properties. Jamblang flower is a part of the plant that is quite rich in antioxidant compounds. Antioxidants help protect the body's cells from oxidative damage and can help prevent various degenerative diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and premature aging. This study aimed to carry out a systematic review regarding the potential of Jamblang flowers (Syzygium cumini) in medicinal uses. The literature search process was carried out on various databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries, and Google Scholar) regarding the potency of Jamblang flower (Syzygium cumini) in medicinal uses. This study follows the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) recommendations. Jamblang flowers have interesting potential health benefits. The active compounds contained in Jamblang flowers, including antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, and anticancer compounds, can provide health benefits for the body.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been growing interest in the potential medicinal benefits of Syzygium cumini. This is due in part to the plant's rich content of antioxidants, flavonoids, and other phytochemicals. These compounds have been shown to have a variety of beneficial effects, including antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties. The solvent plays an important role in the extraction of compounds from Syzygium cumini. This study aimed to conduct a systematic review to explore the potential of jamblang plants (Syzygium cumini) based on solvent polarity. The literature search process was carried out on various databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries, and Google Scholar) regarding the potential of jamblang in medicinal uses based on solvent polarity. This study follows the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) recommendations. The solvent plays an important role in the extraction of compounds from Syzygium cumini. The solvent must be able to dissolve the target compounds, but it must not also dissolve other compounds that are not desired. The solvent must also be compatible with the plant material and the extraction method. The solvent must be of the same polarity as the target compounds. For example, polar solvents such as water and ethanol are good for extracting polar compounds, such as flavonoids and anthocyanins. Non-polar solvents such as acetone and methanol are good for extracting non-polar compounds, such as terpenes and steroids.
