Abstract

Betulinic acid comes from betulin, a triterpenoid compound that naturally occurs in the bark of the Betula tree. Betulin has a pentacyclic chemical structure, which contains five distinct rings. Betulinic acid is the carboxylic acid form of betulin, meaning it has a carboxyl group (-COOH), which gives this compound its acidic nature. This study is a literature review. Data obtained from journal analysis in the form of qualitative and quantitative data. In this review article, the authors have explored in depth the promising pharmacological activities of betulinic acid. The studies that have been carried out consistently prove the potency of this compound in various therapeutic and pharmacological aspects. Research has also identified the ability of this compound to modulate biochemical pathways relevant to the nervous system, providing new hope in the treatment of complex neurological disorders.

Abstract

Jamblang wood, also known as jambolin or jambolan, is a plant that is widespread in various tropical regions, including Indonesia. Jamblang bark has great potential as a source of raw material for making active carbon because it is rich in organic compounds, cellulose, and lignin, which can provide an ideal pore structure to capture and bind heavy metals. The literature search process was carried out on various databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries, and Google Scholar) regarding the potential of jamblang bark (Syzygium cumini) activated carbon in reducing lead heavy metal (Pb) levels. This study follows the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) recommendations. Activated carbon produced from jamblang bark (Syzygium cumini) has significant potential in reducing levels of heavy metal lead (Pb) in various wastewater treatment settings, drinking water treatment, and recovery of heavy metals from industrial waste.

Abstract

Jamblang is rich in bioactive compounds such as anthocyanins, phenolics, and flavonoids. Anthocyanins, which give jamblang fruit its dark color, have been known for their antioxidant properties that can fight oxidative stress, which is linked to the development of cancer. Phenolics, with their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, provide additional protection to body cells. Flavonoids, with a wide range of biological activities, including anti-cancer properties, could potentially be promising agents in cancer prevention and treatment efforts. The literature search process was carried out on various databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries, and Google Scholar) regarding the potential of the active compound Jamblang (Syzygium cumini) as anti-breast cancer. This study follows the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) recommendations. The jamblang plant has potential as an anti-breast cancer agent. Jamblang plants are rich in active compounds that have anticancer activity, namely anthocyanins, flavonoids, phenolic compounds and carotenoids. These compounds can inhibit cancer cell growth, trigger apoptosis, and inhibit metastasis.

Abstract

White glutinous rice bran has lower glucose levels than white glutinous rice. This could be relevant for glycemic management in diabetes sufferers. Lower glucose levels can help reduce blood sugar spikes after food consumption. White glutinous rice bran, with its low glucose content, can be considered a safe and beneficial food alternative for diabetes sufferers. The literature search process was carried out on various databases (PubMed, Web of Sciences, EMBASE, Cochrane Libraries, and Google Scholar) regarding the analysis of glucose levels in white glutinous rice bran. This study follows the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) recommendations. The glucose content in rice bran ranges from 1.5 to 2.5%, a lower value compared to the glucose content in white glutinous rice which reaches around 7.5%. White glutinous rice bran has relatively low glucose levels, making it a potential food option for consumption by diabetes mellitus sufferers.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to impaired insulin secretion or function. Pharmacological management of diabetes often has side effects, making it necessary to explore safer and more effective alternative treatments. Flavonoid compounds, which are widely found in medicinal plants, have demonstrated various pharmacological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and hypoglycemic effects. Recent studies have revealed that flavonoids can act through multiple mechanisms, such as enhancing insulin sensitivity, inhibiting carbohydrate-digesting enzymes, and protecting pancreatic β-cells from oxidative damage. Therefore, the potential of flavonoids in diabetes management is an intriguing topic for further research. The objective of this activity is to provide knowledge about the role of flavonoids in preventing and managing diabetes mellitus. This activity was conducted on Saturday, June 8, 2024, using an educational or direct lecture method for the community residing in Perum Citra Permata Mandiri, Jl. Kristal Blok E7 No. 34-35, Regency, Cikampek Utara, Karawang, West Java. Based on the results of this community service activity, all participants who attended at Perum Permata Mandiri demonstrated a good understanding of the role of flavonoids in the prevention and management of diabetes mellitus

Abstract

The inappropriate and irrational use of medicines is a public health issue that needs to be addressed early on. Students, as the next generation at risk of self-medication, need adequate medicine literacy. The DAGUSIBU (Obtain, Use, Store, and Dispose) program launched by the Indonesian Pharmacists Association and the Indonesian Ministry of Health is an important guide to the smart use of medicines. This community service activity aims to increase the knowledge and awareness of students at the Indonesian School in Kuala Lumpur (SIKL) about the DAGUSIBU principles so that they are able to use drugs safely and rationally. The activity was carried out using interactive counseling methods, question and answer sessions, and simulations, which began with a pre-test and ended with a post-test to measure the increase in knowledge. There was a significant increase in the average knowledge score of students after receiving education. The average pre-test score of 73.3% increased to 93.3% on the post-test. DAGUSIBU education was effective in improving SIKL students' understanding of proper and correct medication use, thereby supporting the creation of a generation that uses medication wisely in accordance with the Gema Cermat program
