Abstract

Many researchers have conducted regarding cultural analysis in English textbooks. However, the comparison between English Textbook as ESL and EFL used in Indonesia in term of cultural analysis is relatively unexplored. After addressing the gap, this study mainly focuses on investigating the cultural contents between Cambridge Global English Key Stage 6 and Erlangga Grow with English Book. The data of the study were taken from the two books regarding the cultural dimensions. The theory of types of culture used is proposed by Hinkel (1999), namely source, target, and international culture. As for the theory of dimensions of culture, namely aesthetic, sociological, semantic, and pragmatic is taken from Adaskou, Britten and Fahsi. The findings reveal that Cambridge Global English Key Stage 6 contained more cultural materials than Erlangga Grow with English Book 6. Cambridge Global English Key Stage 6 contains more percentage or portion in culture types and dimensions which considers the importance of studying culture as a preparation for the learners to face intercultural communication in their future. This study contributes to a new perspective in the study of cultural dimension as well as a new horizon in a comparative study in ELT.

Abstract

Many scholars have conducted research on error analysis in English writing. However, scientific research on errors in using English verbs in terms of tense and aspect is still in its early stages. As a result, the purpose of this study was to identify the errors or mistakes in sentence translation from Indonesian to English that were related to tense and aspects. 25 English department students sat in the English syntax class and translated 12 Indonesian sentences into English. The findings reveal a total of 126 errors in sentence translation in terms of tense and aspect. The past perfect continuous tense, past perfect tense, present perfect continuous tense, future perfect continuous tense, future perfect tense, and future continuous tense are the most common errors. These findings indicate that the students were unfamiliar with the formulas and functions of these tenses, as well as aspect interpretation. As a result, English lecturers/teachers should prioritize English tenses and aspects for EFL students from the start.

Abstract

Numerous scholars globally have conducted research on English writing skills, focusing on identifying optimal strategies or methods for writing. However, investigations into the challenges encountered by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students when employing English tenses in textual recounts remain scarce. Consequently, this study seeks to explore the obstacles confronted by students in utilizing tenses within text recount compositions. The this study was applied in qualitative descriptive method. The data collection was done by requiring a total of 20 EFL students of English Department, who are in the third semester, participated in this research. They were asked to write a recount text on the topic “The Past Life in Senior High School” in a minimum-200-word text.   The technique of data analysis was employed by using qualitative content analysis. That is the data were analyzed and categorized into certain types of errors. Then after the text was analyzed, the results of the study shows that EFL students faced difficulties in determining the choice of tenses that were in accordance with the time context of the writing. Errors in the sentences used were also found. Later, it was also found that students faced difficulties in understanding the selection of tenses that were relevant to the time context of events in the text recount writing. The competence of students in tense mastery is also an obstacle to produce error-free English writing. Good understanding and use of English tenses and practice of using tenses in writing should lead to better improvement in the EFL students' writing skills.
