Abstract

Sidoarjo Batik is an Indonesian cultural heritage that is rich in artistic and traditional values. However, awareness of the importance of preserving and promoting batik Jetis, especially among Sidoarjo children, still needs to be increased. This design aims to create a board game with an attractive character design for children aged 7-12 years. In this approach, the author uses qualitative research methods by collecting data through interviews, FGDs, and questionnaires to resource persons and target audiences. The results of this study provide a foundation for the design of character design in board games. The three main characters designed will serve as guides in the game and as supporting elements in the design of board game components. Hopefully, through this board game, Sidoarjo children can learn and get to know batik jetis fun while maintaining and strengthening the existence of their local culture.

Abstract

Currently, the rapid development of technology causes children to use tablets and cellphones more often. This condition can also become worse because children have a higher risk of developing myopic eyes. It is very necessary to provide education regarding eye health, one of which is for children. Cultivating the habit of maintaining eye health from an early age can have a good impact on children's future. Therefore, there is a need for educational media delivered by health institutions such as community health centers to elementary schools when carrying out health screening. So, children can understand how to maintain eye health. The method used is a qualitative method with primary and secondary data collection techniques. Primary data collection is through interviews, observations, Focus Group Discussions and Observations, while secondary data collection is through literature. The result of this design is characters that are used for eye health educational videos using motion graphics techniques.

Abstract

Globalisasi membawa perubahan besar, termasuk dalam pola konsumsi masyarakat yang mulai meninggalkan tradisi kuliner lokal. Salah satu tradisi yang terancam adalah masakan khas Banyuwangi, seperti Rujak Soto dan Nasi Tempong, yang kurang dikenal generasi muda. Untuk melestarikan kuliner ini maka dibuat buku berjudul “Cita Rasa Bumi Blambangan: Resep Masakan Khas Using Banyuwangi” yang berisikan  berbagai resep masakan tradisional Banyuwangi dan Using. Tentu sebuah buku membutuhkan cover yang unik dan menonjol maka dari itu dibutuhkan perancangan desain cover buku ini. Perancangan desain cover menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan 3 tahapan yaitu tahapan persiapan perancangan yang meliputi riset dan penyusunan konsep kreatif serta tahap eksekusi desain meliputi visualisasi dan pasca produks. Desain akhir cover buku ini Desain cover ini berupa seorang nenek tua yang menyerahkan masakan khas Banyuwangi kepada generasi muda yang dimana diharapkan dapat mempresentasikan buku “Cita Rasa Bumi Blambangan:  Resep Masakan Khas Using Banyuwangi”  dengan baik.

Abstract

The richness of local legends, such as the legend of Giri Gajah from Gresik, faces the risk of being forgotten due to a lack of visual elements appealing to child audiences, especially those aged 8-10 years old. To revitalize this legend, a picture storybook was designed by creating character designs that could captivate children aged 8-10. This dynamic educational medium is the primary target. The focus of the design lies in the character design, making it the core visual element and narrative driver, which connects the oral tradition with the needs of contemporary media. The research method used is design thinking. The design results established four main characters, namely Pandu, Sunan Giri, Sunan Giri's Grandchild, and Gajah (Elephant), using a Semi-Realistic Cartoonist illustration style. This style was chosen for its ability to bridge the reality of local culture with a cheerful visual appeal. This design successfully created an effective medium for the preservation of local culture and the improvement of children's interest in reading.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merancang unggahan carousel pada platform Instagram sebagai media edukasi dan promosi bagi Azria Vet Care. Latar belakang penelitian ini berangkat dari rendahnya kualitas visual dan konsistensi identitas pada konten promosi sebelumnya, sehingga diperlukan perancangan media yang lebih komunikatif, informatif, dan menarik. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan teknik observasi dan wawancara terhadap pemilik Azria Vet Care untuk menggali kebutuhan informasi serta karakteristik audiens. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perancangan unggahan carousel dengan konsep visual modern dan ceria mampu meningkatkan daya tarik serta memperkuat citra profesional dan kekeluargaan petshop. Penerapan kombinasi warna biru dan merah muda, tipografi handwriting dan sans-serif, serta elemen grafis berbentuk benang yang menyerupai hewan berhasil merepresentasikan nilai kepedulian dan kehangatan. Selain berfungsi sebagai media promosi, konten edukatif mengenai pentingnya vaksinasi dan perawatan hewan peliharaan terbukti dapat meningkatkan kesadaran pemilik hewan terhadap kesehatan hewan peliharaannya. Dengan demikian, Instagram carousel terbukti efektif sebagai media komunikasi visual yang tidak hanya memperluas jangkauan promosi, tetapi juga mengedukasi audiens secara interaktif

Abstract

Education plays a very important role in building character and improving the quality of the individual. It is inevitable that problems arise in the implementation of learning. One of the problems often encountered in the school environment is the boredom of the students in the classroom. To overcome this, the provision of interesting and enjoyable learning media is seen as a reasonable solution. Although the primary school age is a crucial period, it is necessary to consider how to provide learning materials that are interesting and fun so that students can more easily accept the material taught by the teacher. Through the design thinking research method, stencil is a media or technique that is often used in the application of art, this media was chosen as a learning media to introduce students to stencil and aims as a form of their expression in pouring their creativity into a learning about art.

Abstract

The results of the 2022 PISA indicate that science skills and interest in Indonesia are still low. One way to increase interest in science is by introducing inventor figure of science and techonology. However, alternative learning media that are communicative and relevant to adolescents' media consumption habits are needed. Therefore, this study aims to design a character design for an inventor in the field of science and technology for a Webtoon comic as an educational tool for adolescents aged 15–18. This study used qualitative and quantitative methods. The qualitative method was used to understand the needs and interests of the target audience and to gather information from the literature for scientific sources in designing the inventor character. The quantitative method was used as one of the character design evaluation criteria, based on voting results by adolescents aged 15–18. The character design used Marika Nieminen's principles: demographics, silhouette and shape, color, and characteristics. Several alternatives were used to generate character designs, which were then evaluated to determine the final design. The character design evaluation will be assessed using several variables within an evaluation framework.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the meaning of religious symbols used in children’s clothing as souvenirs from Ampel, Surabaya. Nearly all of the symbols have undergone a long process of acculturation, through which they have acquired the religious meanings recognized today. The problem addressed in this study is whether these symbols still retain their religious meanings and to what extent their meanings have shifted. This study analyzes children's clothing as the research object and uses Roland Barthes’ visual semiotics framework as the method due to its compatibility in examining symbolic signs at the level of denotation, connotation, and myth. The results of this study demonstrate that the Ampel gate, gold color, and typography function as specific semiotic elements that construct layered meanings related to sacred space, cultural hybridity, and commodification. The symbols remain relevant; however, their meanings have shifted from purely spiritual representations to visual forms shaped by tourism consumption. This study is recommended to serve as the foundation for developing knowledge in tourism souvenir design that represents religious meaning more critically and contextually.

Abstract

Children's emotional regulation is crucial for psychological well-being and social development, yet marginalized children in Indonesia remain vulnerable due to socioeconomic pressures and limited access to interventions. Existing studies have primarily focused on facilitator-oriented training modules that emphasize rules and activity flow. These are not easily accessible to children, lack visual appeal, and are hampered by time, resources, and technical requirements for training sessions. This creates a gap in non-digital, interactive visual media that children can use independently to memorize and practice emotion regulation strategies while gaining a comparable learning experience. Addressing this gap, the present study aims to design character representations for an interactive pop-up storybook as a self-learning tool, facilitated by the WE POSE Surabaya community. Employing a qualitative Design Thinking approach through interviews with children aged 8–10, expert validation, and a literature review. This exploration resulted in four characters: Jalu, Tilu, Bara, and Laras. Warm color tones and chromatic shifts were applied to intuitively represent the emotional context. This storybook integrates interactive features such as pop-up scenes, liftable flaps, and pull-out tabs, allowing children to actively engage. The findings suggest that this type of interactive storybook can serve as an inclusive educational medium for marginalized children with limited digital access. This research contributes to Visual Communication Design by combining character design with physical interactivity to strengthen learning outcomes on emotion regulation.

Abstract

Surabaya is one of Indonesia's metropolitan cities with a rich culinary heritage characterized by distinctive flavors and high cultural value. However, with the passage of time and the influence of globalization, traditional Surabaya cuisine has become less familiar, especially among the younger generation. This study aims to reintroduce Surabaya's signature dishes through illustrated books as an effort to preserve local culture. The methods used include literature study, field observation, and interviews with sources related to Surabaya cuisine. The result is an illustrated book that features various traditional foods such as rujak cingur, lontong balap, tahu tek, sate kelapa, and semanggi, presented in an attractive and informative visual format. Through this illustrated book, it is hoped that readers will not only learn about the diversity of Surabaya's cuisine, but also understand the cultural values contained within it, thereby fostering a sense of pride and awareness to preserve the local culinary heritage.
