Abstract

Getting challenged with academic writing, creative writing in a form of poetry can be delivered as an alternative task to help students cope with writing challenges. Haiku as one of the simplest poetry writings from Japan may help beginner writers to explore poetic words on certain objects or topics without using too many words in each line. Struggling writers can also use Haiku to stimulate their creative thinking in descriptive writing. With its simple pattern, Haiku can also boost students’ confidence to write. This study investigated whether students’ Haiku writing follows its rules and represents the qualities of creative writing. This qualitative study took 20 students in their third year of senior high school as research participants. This research used documentation as an instrument which is the students’ Haiku poetry writing. In the data analysis, students’ Haikus were assessed based on Haiku rules and the qualities of creative writing. It was found that most students have a sufficient understanding of the rules of Haiku writing. Students made some mistakes in their Haikus. However, students showed their efforts to perform the qualities of creative writing. Thus, the researchers believe that with consistent practices, students can write a qualified haiku as creative writing. More use of sensory words can further help the students to vary the diction and characterize the image described in their haikus. Finally, using haiku to express students’ feelings and thoughts and stimulate students’ creative writing is recommended in EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the modes and techniques used by interpreters in the process of interpreting sermons at Potter's House Christian Ministries. This research is a descriptive qualitative study. This research employed the scrutinizing method for data collection, which entails attentive listening to language usage (Sudaryanto, 1993: 133). The researcher adopted a non-participatory role, serving as mere observer of data without direct involvement in its formation. The study focused on analyzing language usage in two recorded videos of weekly services at Potter's House Christian Ministries. The researcher specifically examined individual sentences as manifestations of data, which were recorded and organized into tables based on criteria such as perspective, vocabulary, and modality. Technique assessment was employed to gather data and assess the impact of different modes and techniques on interpretation. The study reveals that interpreters at Potter's House Christian Ministries primarily employ consecutive interpreting mode, particularly short consecutive interpreting. The researcher also discovered six predominant techniques used during the interpretation process, namely: (1) reformulation, (2) elimination technique, (3) summarization, (4) error correction technique, (5) metaphors and saying technique, and (6) code-switching technique.

Abstract

The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of the Intrapersonal Intelligence strategy in improving students' writing descriptive paragraphs. This study was conducted at SMAN 2 Kupang. The population was 63 students of grade eleven. The method used in this study was a quantitative method using a quasi-experimental design. The instrument was a written test, and the t-test formula was used in the data analysis. The results of this study indicated a significant difference between the experimental group and the control group, with the mean score in the experimental group being 70.6 and the mean score in the control group being 50.6. Whereas in the paired test samples, there were significant results between the pre-test and post-test based on the result of the value, the value of the t-test (15.8) was higher than the value of t-table (2.058) with df = N-2. This showed that the effect of the intrapersonal intelligence strategy can improve students' skills in writing descriptive paragraphs. As the intrapersonal intelligence strategy can develop students' thinking to be broader and more dynamic, it can be used as an alternative teaching strategy in improving students' descriptive paragraph writing. Keywords: intrapersonal intelligence strategy, writing, descriptive paragraph

Abstract

This study aimed to enhance vocabulary mastery in teaching synonyms and antonyms using smart box media among eleventh-grade students at SMA Kristen 1 Kupang. Employing a classroom experimental design, researchers conducted pre-tests, applied treatment using smart box media, and followed up with post-tests to evaluate outcomes. Quantitative analysis of the scores revealed significant improvement, substantiating the efficacy of the intervention. Initially, students in the experimental class scored a cumulative 790 in the pre-test. After implementing smart box media, their total post-test score increased to 1300, marking a 64% improvement. The calculation used for these scores involved dividing the number of correct responses by the total number of questions, multiplying by 100, and summing all individual scores. The overall percentage increase was derived using a formula where the difference between the final and initial results was divided by the initial score and multiplied by 100. These results indicate that smart box media is a powerful tool for enhancing vocabulary acquisition. The significant score increases highlights that integrating innovative teaching aids can substantially boost student engagement and learning effectiveness. Thus, the study concludes that the use of smart box media in teaching vocabulary, particularly synonyms and antonyms, is highly effective and beneficial for eleventh-grade students at SMA Kristen 1 Kupang, offering a promising approach for vocabulary instruction in similar educational contexts.
