Abstract

This research describes the conflict dynamics and traces of the arms trade in Papua. Conflict and violence in Papua have become a kind of tangled thread and is a vertical conflict that has been going on for more than 50 years. The primary reason behind this conflict stems from the aspiration for an "Independent Papua,” which was fought for by the Free Papua Organization (OPM) but is now termed by the government as an armed criminal group (KKB). This conflict is also heating up with the existence of Freeport and issues of racial discrimination against Papuan students in various regions in Indonesia. The armed conflict in Papua continues to increase, and victims come from civil society and various professions, ages, genders, religions, and ethnicities, primarily indigenous Papuans. This conflict has threatened peace efforts in Papua, Indonesia, and internationally. The intensification of the conflict is strongly linked to the rise in illegal trade of firearms and ammunition (PSAA) within the region of Papua. The primary purpose of this article is to provide an explanation and analysis of the conflict dynamics in Papua, with a particular focus on investigating the presence and impact of the arms trade within the region. The research employed a descriptive qualitative approach to empirically depict all aspects of the research problem. The study's findings and conclusions reveal the prevalence and implications of the illegal trade in firearms and ammunition that occurs in Papua involves members of the TNI and POLRI, legislators, ASN, and civil society from various professions. Weak internal monitoring and evaluation of the TNI and POLRI institutions have contributed to the increase in PSAA in the land of Papua.

Abstract

Development of PT. Pindad, as one of the main producers of defense and security equipment in Indonesia, plays an important role in the country's efforts to fulfill the Minimum Essential Force (MEF) policy. MEF policy aims toensure that Indonesia's military forces have the minimum capabilities necessary to defend state sovereignty and maintain regional stability. In the context of security in Southeast Asia, the role of PT. Pindad is becoming increasingly significant considering the geopolitical dynamics and security threats that are developing in this region. This studyanalyzes the development of PT. Pindad in increasing production capacity and technological innovation, as well as its impact on MEF fulfillment. Apart from that, this research also explores the contribution of PT. Pindad in supporting national defense policy and its implications for regional security in Southeast Asia. Using a qualitative analysis approach, the findings of this research show that increasing the capacity and quality of PT. Pindad contributes positively to fulfilling the MEF and strengthening Indonesia's strategic position in efforts to maintain regional stability and security.

Abstract

Presidential elections are often accompanied by various phenomena, including hate crimes that persist even after the elections have concluded. This phenomenon has not yet been thoroughly studied through social media analysis. In response to the gaps in previous research, this study focuses on sentiment analysis on social media, the forms of hate crime, and their contributing factors. The study presents three key findings related to hate crimes following the 2024 presidential election in Indonesia. First, Ganjar Pranowo received the least negative sentiment, followed by Anies Baswedan and Prabowo Subianto. Second, hate crimes directed at presidential candidates took the form of ethnic-based sentiment, anti-religion hatred, and threats of violence. Third, factors influencing the emergence of hate crimes post-election include the influence of social media popularity, sponsorship by electoral actors, weak enforcement of campaign violations, and the history of political and ethno communal violence. The study also emphasizes the need for future research to examine post-election hate crimes by integrating multidisciplinary approaches on social media. This would enrich the data and provide more comprehensive knowledge about hate crime phenomena and other forms of digital crime arising from the electoral process.

Abstract

Sudan is located in the Sahel “Coup Belt” region, which has a long history of coups and military rule in Africa. Tensions peaked on April 15, 2023 when Rapid Support Force (RSF) paramilitary forces led by Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo and Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) forces loyal to General Fattah al-Burhan fought in the capital region, Khartoum. This paper aims to analyze the conflict resolution of civil armed conflict between SAF and RSF in Sudan. This paper uses a qualitative method with documentation studies as a source of research information. The results of this study indicate that there are conflict resolution efforts that have been made to achieve peace in the country of Sudan. By using Johan Galtung's conflict resolution approach, three forms of resolution models have been grouped, namely Peacemaking with the help of IGAD (Intergovernmental Authority on Development), AU (African Union), Saudi Arabia and the United States, Peacekeeping with the help of the UN Security Council mandate namely UNITAMS United Nations Integrated Transition Assistance Mission in Sudan) and Peacebuilding by forming three framework agreements namely the Juba Peace Agreement (JPA), the Treaty of Jeddah and the Sudan Framework.

Abstract

The military coup in Myanmar in 2021, had profound effects not only on the country but also on its neighboring countries, particularly Thailand. This study examines the coup’s impact on the security, economy, and diplomatic relations between Myanmar and Thailand. Through qualitative research and literature study, the study reveals that the coup led to a humanitarian crisis, large-scale refugee movements, cross-border security issues, and negative economic consequences. Thailand encountered difficulties in managing the influx of refugees, combating drug trafficking, and maintaining socio-economic stability along its border. In response, Thailand adopted a pragmatic diplomatic strategy, including a “Quiet Diplomacy” policy, to preserve bilateral relations and reduce tensions. Despite facing criticism for potentially legitimizing the military junta, Thailand sought to mediate the conflict. The study concludes that Myanmar’s military coup influences domestic security and the geopolitical and economic landscape of the region, necessitating attention and strategic actions from the international community. This research contributes to enriching literature on the impacts of Myanmar’s military coup to its neighboring countries and the dynamic of security in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

The Indo-Pacific region has become the epicenter of global attention due to its abundant natural resources and strategic trade routes vital to the world economy. However, this potential is accompanied by frequent territorial conflicts arising from overlapping maritime claims among regional and major powers. These disputes not only threaten regional stability but also pose broader risks to international peace and maritime security. This study aims to explore and analyze the extent to which international law of the sea, particularly the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), is implemented in resolving territorial disputes within the Indo-Pacific region. The primary objective is to assess the effectiveness of UNCLOS as a legal instrument in guiding state behaviour and facilitating peaceful dispute settlement in complex geopolitical environments. Using a qualitative approach through comprehensive literature studies, the research examines the dynamics of conflicts and evaluates the performance of existing legal frameworks and dispute resolution mechanisms, including arbitration and negotiations under UNCLOS provisions. The findings reveal that although UNCLOS provides a solid legal foundation for defining maritime rights and obligations, its practical application often faces significant obstacles, including political interests, economic competition, and national security concerns that limit states' willingness to comply or cooperate. Moreover, the lack of enforcement mechanisms and the selective adherence to legal rulings further weaken the credibility of international law in the region. Consequently, the study emphasizes the need for stronger multilateral diplomatic efforts and cooperative regional frameworks to ensure fair and peaceful conflict resolution, thereby preventing further escalation in the Indo-Pacific.
