Abstract

One of the wisdom literature books that is frequently quoted, though often interpreted out of context, is the book of Ecclesiastes, which remains relevant to the life of believers. However, there are still differences in interpretation and limitations in historical cultural analysis, as well as varying approaches to textual focus and accountability in understanding life. This article aims to bridge the contradictory aspects of the vanity of wisdom in Ecclesiastes 1:12-18 and its harmony with the benefits of wisdom in the book of Proverbs. The methodology used in this research is wisdom literature hermeneutics, which includes an in-depth textual analysis and historical analysis of the text of Ecclesiastes 1:12-18. This approach provides a bridging understanding that allows for recognizing the contradictions (negation) and harmony in the books of Ecclesiastes and Proverbs, as well as their theological and practical implications for readers. Despite the variety of interpretations, integrating these elements offers a comprehensive view of wisdom and provides a critical reflection both scientifically and practically for real-life application through a relevant, proportional, and balanced theological interpretation in understanding hebel and hokmah. Thus, the awareness of the limitations of human wisdom should be oriented towards complete dependence on the fear of the Lord.

Abstract

The book of Proverbs stands out in the wisdom genre due to its use of figurative language, including comparison, substitution, addition, and parallelism. The interpretation of Proverbs 10-29 reveals a unique use of figurative language in the expression 'riches that grow wings' found in Proverbs 23:4-5. There has been a difference in interpretation between Thomas Ulrich and Kojo Okyere regarding the figurative use of the phrase 'wealth that grows wings'. Ulrich and Okyere believe it refers to building organizational relationships and exercising self-control when using wealth earned through one's work. However, this article's qualitative study of the sub-interpretative design of the wisdom genre, which focuses on the use of figurative language, inter-topic context, and parallelism structure, reveals that the expression 'wealth that grows wings' in Proverbs 23:4-5 serves as an action-evaluation factor against hasty action and a reminder of the futility of using wealth. The interpretation's findings are based on a stylistic debate of each stitch line of Proverbs that relates reciprocally to character building in Proverbs 23:4-5.

Abstract

Abstract

There are two groups of scholars who discuss Malachi 2:1-3 from different perspectives, namely, the divine perspective and the priestly perspective. These two views have led to the fallacy of dichotomizing the intent of the divine utterance. This article comprehensively correlates these two perspectives, which have implications for believers' decisions, based on the hermeneutic method of studying prophetic literature in the sub-genre of catastrophic prophecy. This article finds that the influence of divine punitive speech has great implications for the factors that influence believers' decisions, namely First, the Listening Factor, which discusses the decision to direct our hearing to the Word of God; Second, the Attention Factor, which discusses the decision to specifically and deliberately provide a sincere heart to fellowship and glorify God; and Third, the Honoring God's Name Factor, as an effect of the previous two factors, which makes every believer choose to honor God's name. The results of this study serve as a warning to every believer, especially to servants of God and ministers in the church as serving priests.

Abstract

Abstract: This article aims to find the existence of Emotional Intelligence as a servant's response in Habakkuk's paradigm shift towards God based on his book. This research shows that Habakkuk as a servant facing a crisis, experienced a paradigm shift towards God with excellent emotional management. The method used is thematic analysis modeling the doctrine of God. The results of the study found that EI, specifically stress management, decision making and Habakkuk's emotional expression were very good in responding to his condition. This finding is based on Habakkuk's paradigm shift, which begins in chapter 1 where his emotions are disturbed so that he questions God's justice and shows good stress management. Chapter 2 Habakkuk made the decision to keep waiting for God's answer and accept His decree. Chapter 3 Habakkuk shows emotional expression by offering prayers and adoration to God and closes his book with a firm statement of faith. This confirms that Habakkuk experienced a paradigm shift regarding God, from doubting and questioning God's justice to exalting God and triumphing in God. Keywords: Servant, Habakkuk, Emotional Intelligence, Paradigm

Abstract

Based on the literature review, there are two groups of scholars discussing Proverbs 25:21-22: the group that links the writing of this verse to Jesus' teachings on love and forgiveness, and the group that focuses only on the teachings of Paul, who quoted this verse as an exhortation to the Romans to do good to their enemies and that there is a reward for every good deed. The research attempts to examine to analyze the meaning of the phrase "heaping coals of fire" and its implications for character development. The research used a qualitative method with sub-interpretive design, specifically, wisdom literature hermeneutics. This study found three related implementations of this phrase to character building, namely: first, deciding to do the right thing; second, overcoming ego and hatred; third, deciding to live an exemplary life. The results of this study are very important in character building so that believers can apply the values of truth in life and lead exemplary lives, and provide understanding in the development of wisdom literature research.

Abstract

Proverbs 11:31 is an Old Testament passage of wisdom quoted by Peter in 1 Peter 4:18. Based on the literature search, there are two interpretations related to this intertextual use of Scripture, namely talking about retribution or divine justice and moral responsibility. But it was found that previous studies did not mention anything about Peter's motive in quoting this wisdom literature narrative. Therefore, this study aims to specifically examine Peter's motives in quoting this Old Testament passage. There are strong implications of the Wisdom literature exhortations quoted by Peter as an encouragement to the early church to choose to live as righteous people.   Therefore, this research used qualitative methods with a sub-interpretive design, specifically wisdom literature hermeneutics and literature study. This article finds that Peter's motivation for encouraging the believers was that they should never envy the oppressors and persecutors because those who reject the gospel will suffer more than anything Christians have to face in this life. God is just, and His judgment will apply to everyone, including the wicked. Peter's motive for quoting the Old Testament also serves as a theological and practical guide for believers, enabling them to live in a way that reflects their faith and trust in God's final judgment and deliverance.

Abstract

Psalm 127 emphasizes the importance of man depending on God in all aspects of life. While most researchers, including Subagyo H, identify “Family” as the main theme, this article offers a different interpretation. This study reveals the content of the theme “Synergy between God's Sovereignty and Human Effort” as the core of Psalm 127. Using a qualitative approach, the study analyzes the structure and language patterns of the text, applying Robert Lowth's concept of parallelism to identify relationships between lines. It also considers the historical and cultural context in which the Psalm was written, as well as its impact on the choice of language and structure of the poem. The results are first, verse 1 through synonymous parallelism affirms the recognition of God's intervention without negating human effort; second, the antithetical parallelism in verse 2 shows the relationship between human effort and the time or circumstance that triggers God's blessing; third, the synthesizing parallelism in verses 3-5 illustrates God's trust in man's duty in educating children in youth. The understanding of the synergy between God's sovereignty and human effort revealed through this analysis provides a new perspective in interpreting Psalm 127.
