Abstract

This phrase "strange woman" appears several times in the Book of Proverbs and is problematic. Some translate it as a seductress, a bitch, a woman who has an affair, and as a wicked woman. Interestingly, all these interpretations of the phrase have negative connotations in the context. If so, why is this phrase always associated with negativity? What is the true meaning of this phrase? There seems to be a research gap in discussing this phrase, which is the main reason for the author to provide a specific and comprehensive interpretation of the phrase "foreign woman" and its implications for women today. Based on the qualitative method with sub interpretative design, especially wisdom literature hermeneutics, this study found that, there are five important meanings that explain the phrase "strange woman," namely, a woman who is unfaithful to the covenant with God, a woman who does not honor marriage, a harlot, a seductress, and a wicked woman. The implication of this study is a reference and warning for women to build the right character and become wise women so that they can be exemplary as good mothers and wives.

Abstract

Abstract: Research on reputation building indicates that an individual's reputation relies on the combination of integrity with their social surroundings, viewing reputation through the lens of social interactions of that person. Additionally, reputation formation is observed in how an individual prioritizes integrity, even when faced with challenging social conditions; reputation is shaped by the social visibility of one's past actions. Nonetheless, this study highlights that reputation goes beyond mere verbal communication and social engagement—it undeniably incorporates the physical aspect. This article explores the idea of building a reputation through embodiment, illustrating the significant role the body plays in shaping a person’s reputation, examined through Proverbs 12:23. The research employs a literary analysis framework focused on the wisdom derived from Proverbs 12:23, utilizing figurative interpretation as a means of analysis. Various types accompany the interpretation in extracting the gist of Proverbs 12:23—related to embodiment for repute in non-verbal communication. Findings reveal that embodiment significantly influences one's societal reputation, integrity, and past conduct. The terms “cover” and “proclaim” suggest verbal expression and can be deduced from physical gestures. Therefore, verbal communication is seen as enhanced and substantiated by embodiment, significantly governing an individual's reputation.

Abstract

Abstract: Proverbs is a book which contains wisdom and is a very important book in the Old Testament besides the other books of wisdom. An important piece of wisdom in Proverbs 6:1-5 is the practical advice regarding an inexperienced person becoming a guarantor for others, thereby exposing himself to risks such as financial ruin, poverty or even debt. This research uses qualitative terms such as: analysis from the perspective of biblical theology, exegesis with an interpretative approach (interpretative design), specifically thematic study, in order to explore and obtain the meaning of words and the implementation of the phrases "fellow insurer", "agreement", "entangled and caught", "words of mouth", "escape" in a financial dispute. This article presents new insight on the concept of insurers, such as: Firstly, the concept of insuring is a risky concept for someone who becomes an insurer because an insurer will be under the power of the debtor. Secondly, liability is a form of insuring because it is a taking on of obligation and not a physical standing-in. Thirdly, the concept of insuring must pay attention to the factors of agreement and the competence of the parties to the agreement. Fourthly, an insuring agreement must provide a financial dispute resolution option, so that the parties can make a new agreement. Insurances that have occurred can be canceled with an agreement mechanism where the lender and the recipient of the loan release their rights and obligations.

Abstract

Principles can be defined as principles, truths that become the basis for thinking, acting, and behaving. Today's young generation also has principles that they hold as a reference in life, one of which is the principle of YOLO which can be defined differently from one another. The problem is that the different understanding of the YOLO principle creates contradictions so that two people with the same principle can have very contradictory ways and achievements in life between the positive and negative sides. Misperceptions in understanding the YOLO principle can affect the moral depravity, mindset, and lifestyle of the younger generation. Therefore, by using a qualitative method with a literal study approach, the researcher will conduct research to find how the YOLO life principle is theologically linked to the book of Ecclesiastes 11: 9-10. At the end of the research, it is found that the YOLO life principle does not contradict the truth of God's word if it is accompanied by accountability to God.

Abstract

The book Proverbs and the Formation of Character by Dave Bland highlights how the book of Proverbs shapes moral character through practical and relational wisdom. Bland focuses on the often-overlooked section of sentence literature (Proverbs 10–29) and shows that the book of Proverbs has the power to shape virtues such as justice and self-control. With an interdisciplinary approach, he brings together theology, ethics, homiletics, and psychology to show the relevance of Proverbs in modern life. Wisdom in Proverbs is described as the result of a relationship with God and community, and is obtained through dialogue and life experience. Therefore, Dave Bland's critical insight into the character formation of the book of Proverbs in this book is not only oriented toward a dimension of moral rules, but also a process of character growth that takes place through learning adaptation, correction, and openness to guidance from family with community.
