Abstract

The need for environmentally responsible extraction techniques has driven the development of green alternatives to conventional organic solvents. Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) offer a sustainable option due to their low toxicity, biodegradability, and simple preparation. In this study, a DES composed of glycine, glycerol, and water (1:11:15 molar ratio) was used as a green extraction medium to isolate bioactive compounds from the red algae (Eucheuma cottonii), providing an eco-friendly solution for efficient marine bioresource utilization. This final product offers a simplified process, as the resulting extract requires no further separation prior to application. The DES exhibited favourable physicochemical properties, including a pH of 5, density of 1300.14 kg/m³, viscosity of 0.0198 Pa·s, and a freezing point below 263.15 K. Phytochemical screening of the DES-based extract confirmed the presence of phenolic and terpenoid compounds. The extract was directly incorporated into sunscreen lotion formulations at concentrations ranging from 0 to 15% (w/w). All formulations showed good homogeneity, with the highest sun protection factor (SPF) value of 8.37 observed in the lotion containing 15% red algae extract. This research shows the success of extracting natural anti-UV ingredients in an environmentally friendly and efficient manner.

Abstract

Pheophorbide, as a chlorophyll derivative, has potential as a complexing ligand for heavy metals, including lanthanides. The synthesis of Nd-pheophytin complex and its more polar Nd-pheophorbide (pheophytin’s hydrolyzed product) were investigated using pheophytin isolated from Katuk’s (Sauropus androgynus L. Merr.) leaves. This study aims to determine the optimal reaction conditions and the complex characteristics. Pheophytin ligand and Nd were complexed under two different reaction conditions: room temperature and reflux at 65 °C for 10 hours. The pheophytin starting material was obtained by preparative thin-layer chromatography (PTLC), yielding 0.02 g. UV-vis analysis revealed characteristic absorption bands at 404 nm (Soret band) and 666 nm (Q band) in methanol, while FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of functional groups corresponding to pheophytin. The Nd-pheophytin complex formation was indicated by hypsochromic shifts in UV-vis spectra, suggesting the Nd³⁺ complexing. Fluorescence spectra between pheophytin and Nd-pheophytin showed distinct emission patterns, with pheophytin exhibiting peaks at 662 and 722 nm, while Nd-pheophytin displayed peaks with shoulders at 654 and 714 nm. Hydrolysis of Nd-pheophytin using 1 M NaOH at pH 10 produced Nd-pheophorbide. TLC analysis showed a decrease in the Rf value of Nd-pheophytin to Nd-pheophorbide from 0.95 to 0.43, with tailing, attributed to the higher polarity of pheophorbide. These findings confirm the successful synthesis and hydrolysis of the Nd-pheophytin complex.

Abstract

The Ni²⁺-cation modified TiO₂ photocatalyst has been synthesized using the sol-gel method. Doping with metal ions into the TiO₂ lattice structure was carried out as an effort to reduce the band gap energy and shift the absorption region into the visible light range. The synthesized TiO₂-Ni photocatalyst was subsequently combined with coconut coir fibers as a floating material, commonly referred to as the floating photocatalyst method. This research aims to determine the effect of varying Ni dopant concentrations in TiO₂-Ni/coconut coir fibers on the percentage degradation of methylene blue. Based on XRD characterization, TiO₂-Ni with 1% dopant concentration produced crystals with a size of 8.48 nm and a crystallinity degree of 72.27%. UV-Vis DRS characterization showed that the smallest band gap energy was obtained from the TiO₂-Ni sample with 1% dopant concentration, namely 2.67 eV with an absorption wavelength of 464 nm. FTIR characterization of TiO₂-Ni/coconut coir fiber revealed the appearance of new peaks at wavenumbers 1402 cm⁻¹, 1877 cm⁻¹, and 2814 cm⁻¹, corresponding to –O– groups, ester groups, and –CH₂ groups. Photocatalytic activity tests showed that the higher the Ni dopant concentration, the lower the percentage degradation of methylene blue. The TiO₂-Ni/coconut coir fiber photocatalyst with 1% dopant concentration exhibited the highest degradation efficiency, with a decrease in absorbance of 73.09% after 120 minutes under visible light irradiation.

Abstract

Chicken eggshell waste represents an abundant biomineral resource that can be converted into calcium oxide (CaO) to provide a low cost and environmentally friendly adsorbent for crude palm oil (CPO) refining. This study examined the effects of calcination temperature (800 and 850 °C), sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) activator concentration (3, 4, and 5%), and adsorbent mass (0.1, 0.5, and 0.9 g) on the adsorption of free fatty acids (FFA) from CPO. Eggshell derived CaO was produced by calcination and chemical activation, and phase formation was verified using X ray diffraction (XRD). Adsorbent quality was screened using iodine adsorption capacity, which peaked at 509.83 mg/g for CaO activated with 4% NaHCO3. XRD patterns showed that calcination at 850 °C yielded more crystalline CaO than calcination at 800 °C, supporting selection of 850 °C for subsequent activation and adsorption tests. Batch adsorption demonstrated that higher adsorbent dosage increased FFA removal, with 0.9 g providing the best performance. Under the optimum condition, FFA decreased from 12.16% to 3.08%, corresponding to 74.70% adsorption efficiency and meeting the Indonesian standard SNI 2901 2021 (maximum FFA 5%). These findings highlight chicken eggshell derived CaO as a promising, waste based substitute for commercial adsorbents in sustainable CPO purification.

Abstract

Abstract. Novia R, Ardiningsih P, Adhityawarman, Sarwiyati. 2022. Characteristics of Lactic Acid bacteria isolated from traditional fermented fish. Biodiversitas 23: 5662-5669. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are commonly involved in most food fermentation and contribute to the process’s quality and safety. The study investigates the characteristics of LAB isolated from buduk, pekasam, and pekasam ale-ale. Twelve colonies each sample were isolated and identified based on morphology and biochemical test. The pekasam ale-ale isolates were identified as Pediococcus sp. strain A1 and Pediococcus sp. strain A3; Enterococcus sp. strain A2 and Enterococcus sp. strain A4. The LAB in buduk were identified as Streptococcus sp. strain B1, Pediococcus sp. strain B2 and Pediococcus sp. strain B4, Enterococcus sp. strain B3. The pekasam isolates were identified as Pediococcus sp. strain P1, Streptococcus sp. strain P2 and Streptococcus sp. strain P4, Lactobacillus sp. strain P3. The LAB showed antimicrobial activities while Lactobacillus sp. strain P3 and Streptococcus sp. strain P4 could grow at pH 1. Two LAB including Enterococcus sp. strain A2 and Pediococcus sp. strain P1 showed amylase activity while Pediococcus sp. strain A3, Streptococcus sp. strain B1, Pediococcus sp. strain B2, Enterococcus sp. strain B3 showed protease activity. All LAB produced organic acids with varying concentrations at different incubation times. Furthermore, those isolated from various fish fermentations showed different genera and characteristics. Lactobacillus sp. strain P3 was the best to initiate food fermentation and a probiotic candidate based on their characteristics.
