Abstract

An amperometric biosensor for the indirect determination of Hg(II) has been developed based on inhibition of urease (EC 3.5.1.5) immobilized into alginate–chitosan polyelectrolyte complexes membrane. The biosensor response was monitored by following the reduction peak of hydrolyzed urea at around -0.15 V. The amperometric biosensor has a dynamic range 40–90 ppb Hg(II) with limit of detection of 66.45 ppb toward Hg(II) ions, repeatability (CV) value of 0.86% and only Ag(I) as the main potential interference. The sensor shows a stable and reproducible response for more than 2 weeks when it stored dry at 4 °C. The analytical results of Hg(II)-spiked water sample showed a good agreement with those obtained by atomic absorption spectrometry method, suggesting that the developed method may be applied in the determination of Hg(II) in the water samples.

Abstract

Superabsorbent polymer (SAP) blend has been synthesized from carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), humic acid, and aluminum sulphate octadecahydrate cross-linker. SAP is hydrophilic networks that can absorb and retain huge amount of water within their structures. Humic acid as starting material of polymer, was isolated from subgrade Batujai Dam by using IHSS method. Water Absorption Capacity (WAC) measurement, FTIR analysis, and agitation tests to investigate the cross-linking process and which of Al3+ and SO42- ions causes the crosslinking are carried out. Optimum cross-linking ratio of CMC and cross-linker appeared to be 2wt% corresponded to WAC determination. FTIR spectrum of CMC/humic acid blend and agitation test showed that CMC react with humic acid during polymerization process via Al3+ ion. Keywords: carboxymethyl cellulose; Al3+ ion; humic acid; superabsorbent polymer.

Abstract

The corrosion inhibition efficiency of copper was tested by the weight loss method in 1 M H2SO4 medium in the presence of pinostrobin as inhibitor. It shows that the addition of pinostrobin inhibitor reduce the corrosion rate. The nature of thermodynamic of pinostrobin adsorption on copper surfaces follows the Freundlich isotherm. The process of inhibition is endothermic, spontaneous and physisorption. It is proved by the Ea, ΔH and ΔS and ΔG values in which the thermodynamic studies show that the values of Ea < 80 kJ.mol-1, ∆H positive, ∆S positive, and ΔG < -20 kJ.mol-1.

Abstract

A method for determining mercury concentration using a mercury analyzer in a river water sample was validated according to ISO/IEC 17025. Analytical performance including linear range, limit of detection, precision and accuracy were evaluated. Mercury speciation profile was obtained from Pelangan River at three areas within Dusun Rambut Petung, an area with the highest amount of artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. Then, their concentration in each species was measured using sequential extraction. Good curve linearity was obtained in the concentration range of 0.1-5.0 µg/L and the limit of detection was 0.014 µg/L. The developed method has good precision and accuracy with a RSD value <10% and a recovery of 94.16-101.91%. The detected fraction of mercury in the Pelangan river is organomercury, elemental mercury, and sulfide-bound species with each concentration of 0.732±0.032; 0.350±0.027; and 0.850±0.027 µg/L, respectively. The measurement results showed conformity with the reference method using CV-AAS. Therefore, this method can be applied to determine mercury levels in water for monitoring environmental quality.

Abstract

Dyeing woven yarn using natural dyes is increasingly popular, but the process is complicated, color consistency is low, fades easily and color choices are limited. Service activities in Sukarara Village in the form of socialization and assistance on coloring techniques using pH-based anthocyanins (acidity degrees) were carried out as a solution to these problems. By varying the pH of the anthocyanin solution using buffer 2-10 followed by fixation/mordanting, more color variations (one type of plant extract), consistency and color resistance were achieved. The activity partners are 20 members of the Subahnale Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis). Activities include FGD, interviews, socialization, mentoring and evaluation. The activity was carried out well without significant obstacles with an increase in the average value of partners from 55 to 87. It is hoped that Pokdarwis can synergize with the village government for the sustainability of activities so that the role of woven fabrics positively contributes to the community welfare.

Abstract

Moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) is a plant belonging to the moringaceae family. Moringa seeds contain oil which can be used as a raw material for making azelaic acid. Azelaic acid is used as an anti-acne in the pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. Azelaic acid can be obtained from the oxidation process of fatty acids in moringa seed oil using potassium permanganate as an oxidizing agent. The resulting azelaic acid is in the form of white crystals with a conversion percentage of 72.17%. The results of the FT-IR characterization showed the formation of azelaic acid characterized by widening of the hydroxyl group at 3448.46 cm-1 followed by a shift of the ester group at absorption of 1633.46 cm-1. The ester bond is strengthened at a wavelength of 1115.95 cm-1.

Abstract

On the West Nusa Tenggara island of Lombok, a local plant called moringa (Moringa oleifera) is frequently found. Due to its high nutritional value, this plant can be consumed in almost all of its components, particularly the leaves and seeds. With the help of Flamboyan Women Farmers Group (Kelompok Wanita Tani Flamboyan) partners, this service activity was carried out by lecturing the public on the uses of moringa plants and other local flora as antiseptic soap and providing instruction on how to make soap from moringa seed oil. The activity's external advantages include: (1) enhancing farmer group mothers' knowledge of the advantages and potential of nearby plants; (2) facilitating the need for antiseptic soap for families; (3) enhancing mothers' motivation and creativity to create independent jobs in an effort to improve the family economy; and (4) producing publications in scientific journals. According to the outcomes of the community service projects, this training activity can improve the knowledge and skills of the women of the Flamboyan Farmers Group in the production of antibacterial soap using moringa seed oil.

Abstract

Sukarara Village as a weaving center village in Lombok is expected to be one of the attractions for tourists visiting Lombok. Weaving skills are passed down from generation to generation to the women of Sukarara Village so that they are able to produce very good quality woven fabrics. The management of the Sukarara weaving tourism village is under the coordination of the Kelompok Sadar Wisata (Pokdarwis) Subahnale, especially the marketing of woven fabrics. Unfortunately, their knowledge and business management skills are still limited so they require assistance and training to have good management knowledge in terms of production, human resources, finance and marketing as a form of community service activities (PKM). PKM activities are carried out through outreach and training to partners, starting with a survey of partner conditions (through FGDs and interviews), then business management training (production, human resources, marketing and finance) and evaluating partner knowledge based on test scores. Partners are also introduced to SWOT analysis in order to evaluate the condition of the business so that it keep going and growing. The evaluation results showed that the implementation of socialization and training by the PKM team in general has been running quite effectively. This is indicated by the increase in the average score of partners' knowledges of business management including production, human resources, finance and marketing. The active involvement and enthusiasm of the participants were observed during the activity. The sustainability of this program needs to be pursued by Pokdarsis Subahnale while still receiving direction from the PKM implementation team so that the role of Sukarara Village as a weaving tourism village is more apparent in improving the welfare of its people.
