Abstract

The kinship system within Tanean Lanjheng plays a pivotal role in the transmission and internalization of Islamic values in the daily lives of the Madurese community. This process of internalization occurs within a traditional social space that not only reflects a physical settlement pattern but also embodies cultural symbols and practices deeply intertwined with religious teachings. This study seeks to analyze the kinship system present in Tanean Lanjheng settlements and to examine the mechanisms through which Islamic values are perpetuated across generations. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research was conducted in Lieson Hamlet, Sumenep, utilizing participatory observation and in-depth interviews with local community leaders. Data analysis was informed by Berger and Luckmann’s theory of social construction, Émile Durkheim’s concept of social facts, and Clifford Geertz’s notion of the cultural broker. The findings indicate that Tanean Lanjheng operates as a matrilineal social system that facilitates the collective transmission of Islamic values through processes of exemplification (uswah) and habituation (ta’dib), with the ghuru (teacher/cleric) serving as the principal agent. The internalization of values transpires not only through ritual practices but also via quotidian interactions and kinship solidarity. Nonetheless, the study identifies significant challenges, including the erosion of central family figures, social fragmentation resulting from youth mobility, and stratified patterns of value internalization linked to families’ socio-religious status. These findings underscore the significance of Tanean Lanjheng as a contextually grounded model of Islamic values education that retains its relevance amid modernization.

Abstract

This article examines the symbolic meaning of Sego Langgi as a culinary tradition of the rural Muslim people of Sendangduwur Village, Lamongan, Indonesia, particularly focusing on the religious values, communal solidarity, and cultural identity contained therein. This research used a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods, and combined Clifford Geertz's theory of cultural symbolism, Claude Lévi-Strauss's theory of structuralism, Herbert Blumer's theory of symbolic interactionism, Pierre Bourdieu's theory of cultural inheritance, and Stuart Hall's theory of cultural identity. Obtaining data through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and visual and textual documentation, the research showed that Sego Langgi is not only a ritual meals, but also a medium for inheriting values carried out performatively and informally through cross-generational involvement in the tradition. It also reflects the values of help, simplicity, and respect towards ancestors. Amidst the modernization, the community continues to maintain its existence through the adaptation of digital media as a tool for documentation and preservation. Finally, this article’s scientific contribution lies in enriching local cultural-based culinary studies with a multidisciplinary theoretical approach, as well as in affirming the importance of tradition as a space for the production of values and identity in rural Muslim communities.

Abstract

This paper examines the dynamics of Eid al-Fitr celebrations at the Niujie Mosque in Beijing as a representation of the lived experiences of multiethnic Muslim communities in China. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach and case study methodology, the research highlights how Muslims from diverse ethnic backgrounds—such as Hui, Uighur, and Kazakh interact and engage in cultural integration while celebrating Islamic traditions amid the dominance of Chinese culture and a tightly controlled political system. As the oldest mosque in Beijing, the Niujie Mosque serves not only as a spiritual center but also as a symbol of harmony between Islamic teachings and local traditions. The Eid celebration here functions as a religious occasion as well as a site of social interaction, cultural diplomacy, and identity negotiation. The findings reveal that the Muslim community in Beijing maintains its religious identity through adaptive acculturative practices, such as incorporating local architecture, serving halal Chinese dishes, and involving multiple ethnic groups in religious activities. These findings affirm that Islam in China is not monolithic but rather flourishes in diversity and blends organically with local culture.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolic meaning and differences in the implementation of the Toron Tana tradition in Madurese society, especially in Bangkalan, by highlighting the differences between the priyayi and ordinary people. The scope of the study includes the symbolic aspects of rituals, the social structure of the tradition actors, and the function of tradition in maintaining the identity and social cohesion of the community. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. Data were obtained through interviews with local people, as well as literature studies of relevant references. Data analysis used Émile Durkheim's structural functionalism perspective to understand the social function of the Toron Tana tradition in the context of Madurese society. The results of the study show that although there are differences in the form and excitement of the implementation between the priyayi and ordinary people, the core meaning of the tradition is maintained. This tradition functions as a medium for transmitting cultural and spiritual values, strengthening social solidarity, and reproducing social structures continuously. The conclusion of this study confirms that the Toron Tana tradition is not only a cultural heritage, but also an important instrument in maintaining social integration and the collective identity of the Madurese community amidst the dynamics of changing times.
