Abstract

This study explored how sarcasm was used in two contrasting movie genres, horror, and comedy, to understand its role in shaping tone, storytelling, and audience engagement. Drawing on Camp’s theory, sarcasm is categorized into four types: propositional sarcasm, lexical, like-prefixed, and illocutionary sarcasm. The research uses a qualitative approach, analyzing selected films and their script to identify and classify 127 sarcastic utterances—66 in horror and 61 in comedy. The findings reveal that illocutionary sarcasm is the most common in horror (50.00%), complementing the genre’s subtle and dark undertones. In comedy, propositional sarcasm takes the lead (37.70%), reflecting its playful and straightforward humor. Like-prefixed sarcasm appears the least in both genres, with 4.55% in horror and 3.28% in comedy. These results highlight how sarcasm adapts to each genre’s narrative style and audience expectations. By shedding light on the contextual differences in sarcasm’s use, this study offers valuable insights into genre-specific communication and helps deepen our understanding of sarcasm as a powerful linguistic tool in both entertainment and education. Abstract

This study examined slang in pop and country song lyrics from a sociolinguistic perspective, focusing on the types of slang and identifying the most dominant types in each genre. Song lyrics were obtained from internet transcripts, and a descriptive qualitative method was employed, based on the theory of Allan and Burridge (2006), which categorizes slang into five types, namely fresh and creative, flippant, imitative, acronym, and clipping. 341 slang words were identified, with 248 from the pop genre and 93 from the country genre. Clipping emerged as the most dominant type in both genres, accounting for 44.76% of slang in pop and 73.12% in country music. Other types followed in varying proportions: imitative (28.23% in pop, 9.68% in-country), flippant (15.74% in pop, 12.90% in-country), fresh and creative (10.08% in pop, 4.30% in-country), and acronym (1.21% in pop, and there is no single type of slang acronym in the country 0%). The findings indicate that slang usage is more prevalent in pop music, reflecting its tendency to use concise and accessible language to engage listeners. Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to find out the types of impoliteness strategy and to find out the application of impoliteness strategy in the song lyrics. Blackpink. The data presented is 34 lyrics. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data source was taken from YouTube, totaling 13 songs. Data were analyzed based on the incivility strategy developed by Culpeper (1996). Types of impoliteness found in blackpink song lyrics, 1. Bald impoliteness when recorded 12% 2. Positive politeness 29% 3. Negative impoliteness 53% 4. Sarcastic or mocking politeness 6% 5. Withholding politeness 0%. Why here I don't find wiyhold impoliteness because in the song withhold impoliteness it is very rarely used. Culpeper (2005) makes two observations in the realm of impoliteness. First, he believes that language and non-linguistic cues do not imply impoliteness. To put it another way, neither language nor non-linguistic cues are inherently disrespectful but according to Culpeper (1996), impoliteness can be conveyed not only vocally but also non-verbally, such as avoiding eye contact. When assessing impoliteness, it is also necessary to examine paralinguistic and nonverbal aspects, which is why it is impossible to use this type of song. This finding shows that Blackpink's lyrics use more negative types of impoliteness, which is why the impoliteness strategy is suitable for use in this research.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to determine the type and meaning contained in the PON 2024 Aceh-North Sumatra logo from the perspective of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotics. A logo is a design element that functions as a visual representation of an entity, such as a company, organization, or product, consisting of a combination of symbols, images, and text designed with unique and distinctive visual elements. The method used is descriptive qualitative. This research will produce descriptive data in the form of written or spoken words from the image objects observed during the research. The results of the research on the PON 2024 Logo show that there are 3 icons, namely the Rencong shape, the Malay Songket Fabric shape, and the Batak Ulos Fabric shape. One index in the form of 5 torches, and one symbol in the form of 3 rings, which symbolizes the parent container of Indonesian sports achievements. The logo also has 5 colors that have meaning for each color (red, yellow, green, white, and black). The PON 2024 logo successfully represents the event by combining local cultural elements that are rich in meaning and symbols that reflect the spirit of sports. With the modern design and deep philosophy, the logo not only functions as a visual identity but also as a symbol of the unity and mutual cooperation of the Indonesian people to make this sporting event a success.

Abstract

This study examines the use of language styles in the Battleshipmovie based on Martin Joos' (1967) theory that classifies language styles into five categories: frozen, formal, casual , consultative, and intimate. This study aims to identify the types of language styles in the movie dialogue and understand their functions in supporting social relationships between characters and storyline development. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method with the data source in the form of Battleship movie dialog transcripts, which lasted 2 hours and 11 minutes. The data was collected through direct observation by watching the movie, recording the dialog, and classifying it based on the five categories of language style according to Martin Joos' theory. Analysis was conducted through tagging, coding, and interpreting the data to identify patterns, frequency, and linguistic characteristics in the dialogs. The findings show that of the 100 dialogues analyzed, casual language style dominates with a frequency of 50% of the total data. This language style reflects an intimate and relaxed atmosphere among the characters, relevant to friendly relationships and cooperation in the face of conflict. Formal style appears at 29%, consultative 12%, intimate 6%, and frozen only 3%. The dominance of casual style reflects the more informal context of communication in this movie, especially among friends and coworkers. The use of language styles in Battleship movie not only reflects the dynamics of social relationships between characters but also plays a role in building the atmosphere of the narrative and supporting the audience's understanding of the conflict in the story. This research contributes to linguistic studies, particularly in understanding stylistic variations in film media, as well as providing references for further research on stylistics in other media such as television series or video games.

Illocutionary acts play a crucial role in conveying meaning and expressing certain intentions in communication. This study analyzes the use of illocutionary act in the Inside Out 2 animated movie to understand how the characters use their utterances to achieve their intentions and goals. The purpose of this study is to identify the types of illocutionary acts and to analyze the dominant type of illocutionary act in the character’s utterannces in the movie. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by transcribing the dialogues and classifying the types of illocutionary acts based on Searle’s (1979) theory, which includes representative, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The findings reveal that there are 320 total data and representative is the dominant type with 133 data (41%), which indicates that each character in the movie tends to informing, describing, claiming, clarifying, or agreeing. The second most frequently used is directive with 102 data (32%), followed by expressive with 61 data (19%), then commissive with 22 data (7%) and declarative with 2 data (1%) as the lowest. This study concludes that illocutionary acts in this movie can be interpreted into five types of intentions. The writer recommends this study can be used as a reference for the learning about illocutionary acts or as a reference for the similiar study with a different perspective.

Abstract

This research explores the use of lexemic idiomatic expressions in Robert Thier's Wattpad novel "Storm and Silence" and their literal meanings. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method to identify and categorize idiomatic expressions within the text. This research uses semantics by using Makkai's theory. The data presented taken from Robert Thier's Wattpad novel Storm and Silence; 106 data were found. The result of this research is that tournure idioms are the most prevalent 48 (45%), followed by phrasal verb idioms 19 (18%) and phrasal compound idioms 14 (13%). Pseudo-idioms 11 (10%). Interestingly, the irreversible binomial idiom contains 8 (8%), whereas the incorporation verb is 6 (6%). The result highlight the significance of idiomatic expressions in enhancing character development and thematic depth while presenting challenges for readers unfamiliar with idiomatic expressions. This research contributes to understanding idiomatic expressions in contemporary literature, particularly on digital platforms like Wattpad. It raises awareness among readers regarding the cultural nuances embedded in idiomatic language. The research suggests that further research could expand the dataset and duration to enrich the analysis of idiomatic expressions across various literary genres.
