Abstract

The ability to give arguments is very essential for students in order that they can take more roles in various aspects of life. The quality of students' arguments can be reflected in their ability to accommodate higher-order thinking skills to generate an argument. This study aims at analyzing students ability to make arguments and the quality of their arguments after the implementation of Reading, Questioning and Answering (RQA), ADI (Argument-Driven Inquiry), RQA integrated with ADI, and conventional learning strategies. This research is a survey research using a descriptive quantitative approach. The subjects of this research were the Biology Education students of UIN Alauddin Makassar and Universitas Muslim Maros, South Sulawesi, consisting of 92 students. The collected data were in the form of students argumentation skill data obtained from the observation sheets in each class through the implementation of RQA strategy, ADI strategy, RQA integrated with ADI strategy, and conventional learning strategy on animals Physiology learning. The results of this research showed that the quality of students' arguments at the implementation of RQA, ADI, RQA integrated with ADI learning strategies was at the level of application, analysis, evaluation, and creation, while at the implementation of conventional learning their argumentation quality was at the level of memorizing and understanding.

Abstract

Knowledge dominantly affects community attitudes and participation in mangrove forest conservation. One of the effective ways to solve issues related to preserving mangrove forest in Jeneponto regency is to distribute a constructivism based booklet which introduces the functions, impacts, and management of the forest. This study was conducted in Bangkala District, Jeneponto regency, South Sulawesi from 11 August 2016 to 25 December 2016. Purposive sampling was employed to determine the research sample based on certain consideration. Data was collected using: (1) a questionnaire to elicit responses from some students and community members in Bangkala Jeneponto South Sulawesi towards a booklet developed on the constructivist theory; (2) another questionnaire and interview schedule to obtain community perception on the forest conservation activities; (3) socialization activities at schools and community centers related to the importance of sustainable mangrove forest development. Research findings indicate that: (1) the students and the community members of Bangkala, Jeneponto, South Sulawesi have provided positive and supportive responses towards the development of the constructivism booklet; (2) the society members have realized the significance of mangrove forest development; (3) overall, the students and the community members in Bangkala, Jeneponto, South Sulawesi have been highly involved in preserving the mangrove forest. Assistance to sustain this participation; however, is still necessary. Keywords: Booklet, Mangrove Conservation, Students, Participation, Community.

Abstract

The ability of asking and opining can be used to measure students critical thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the students’ ability of asking and opining at learning program of preservice biology teachers. This type of research was a survey with a qualitative descriptive approach conducted in the subject of Animal Physiology. The research was conducted in the academic year 2015/2016. The research subjects consisted of 109 students in STKIP Indonesia Makassar, UIN Alauddin Makassar, UPRI Makassar. The research instrument was observation sheet related to the students’ ability of asking and opining. The data analysis related to the question quality of students showed that 76.92% questions are classified of Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and 23.08% questions are classified of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The data analysis results related to the students ability of opining showed that 86.66% opinions are classified as Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) and 13.34% opinions are classified as Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). These results suggest that the students’ ability to ask and to opine are not fully empowered yet in the learning process, so those abilities still need to be improved. Abstract

Biji durian (Durio zibethinus) merupakan substrat yang cenderung bersifat sebagai limbah yang minim nilai manfaat. Pembuatan tempe dengan bahan baku biji Durian menjadi solusi alternatif dan merupakan suatu inovasi bahan baku dalam pembuatan tempe dan peningkatan nilai guna biji Durian. Jumlah inokulum dan lama waktu fermentasi yang tepat dalam menghasilkan kualitas tempe berbahan baku biji Durian masih belum diketahui menjadi temuan yang diharapkan dalam penelitian. Rancangan penelitian disusun dengan desain Rancangan Acak Kelompok dengan kadar ragi 0,15 gram : 0,2 gram dengan waktu fermentasi 0 jam, 24 jam, 48 jam, 72 jam, dan 96 jam. Data yang diukur meliputi kadar protein, lemak, dan asam fitat, yang dilanjutkan dengan uji tingkat kesukaan dengan 15 orang panelis dan di ketahui hasil dari uji tersebut bahwa tempe biji durian cukup layak untuk dikonsumsi, karena rasa dan tekstur dari tempe biji durian tersebut memiliki kesamaan dari tempe pada umumnya yang dibuat menggunakan biji kedelai . Data yang diperoleh dianalisis dengan analisis deskriptif, sedangkan data organoleptik dianalisis dengan skala Likert. Hasil penelitian bahwa biji Durian sebelum fermentasi mengalami penurunan kadar protein, dan lemak setelah fermentasi 24jam, sedangkan asam fitat setelah fermentasi 92jam untuk penambahan inokulum 0.15%. Hasil uji sensori menunjukkan 93.33% panelis menilai penambahan ragi 0,15 gram lebih baik dibandingkan ragi 0,2gram berdasarkan warna, rasa, aroma, dan tekstur tempe.

Abstract

Central Kalimantan has a typical peatland habitat which is dominated by Kelakai (Stenochlaena palustris). Various kinds of plants from the Kelakai genus are, for example, the Stenochlaena genus, but the benefits are less known, namely Kelakai. Kelakai is a plant that has clearly visible main characteristics such as stems, roots and leaves. The purpose of this study was to analyze the botanical composition and potency of Kelakai growing on peatlands of Central Kalimantan as a medicinal plant. This research method was an exploratory method supported by laboratory experiments which aimed to determine its potential as a medicinal plant and wound epithelialization under controlled conditions. The data on the botanical composition of Kelakai were analyzed using descriptive analysis, where the sample was obtained by purposive random sampling, while the potency data was analyzed using the Oneway Anova test and then Duncan's 1% test was performed. The wound is on the abdomen 2 cm long. The treatment given was applying Kelakai extract gel with different concentrations on a regular basis every day for 3 days. The results showed that Kelakai on peat swamp land in Central Kalimantan was the most dominant, so it can be concluded that its botanical composition can be a source of forage. The nutritional content of the Kalakai swamp green is quite high, so the Kelakai leaf extract gel has proven potential and can be recommended as an effective wound healing drug at a concentration level of 35%, with the optimal concentration in wound healing at a concentration level of 40%.

Abstract

Kesetaraan gender penting untuk dikaji karena dapat memperkuat pertumbuhan ekonomi dan pembangunan SDM. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi sejauhmana persepsi mahasiswa terhadap peran dan eksistensi perempuan dalam bidang keluarga, ekonomi, pendidikan menghadapi era industri 4.0 serta faktor-faktor penghambat transformasi hubungan gender dan penghapusan ketidaksetaraan gender. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian dengan metode deskriptif dengan menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan kuesioner dan wawancara. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 117 orang responden. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukan bahwa 91.45% responden berpendapat bahwa perempuan harus berperan sebagai motivator dalam perkembangan minat dan bakat anak-anaknya; 81.20% responden berpendapat bahwa perempuan tidak hanya berperan dalam rumah dan keluarga saja, tetapi juga dapat berperan dalam ekonomi dan politik; 94.87% perempuan dapat turut berpartisipasi dalam digitalisasi ekonomi mendatang seperti sains, teknologi, mesin maupun matematika.

Abstract

Argumentation facilitates students’ cognitive activities as they construct scientific knowledge. Studies related to the relationship between conceptual knowledge and argumentation skills in biology learning, especially in animal physiology courses, are still rarely carried out. The primary aim of this study was to determine the correlation between students’ mastery of biology concepts and argumentation skills. A correlational research design was employed. The research sample consisted of 106 fourth semester Biology Education students. The students’ mastery of biology concepts and argumentation skills were evaluated using valid and reliable instruments. Conceptual knowledge measured in this study refers to students’ ability to explain their responses to essay tests on cognitive concepts. Besides, this study also assessed students’ ability to participate in scientific debates and compose written arguments based on the Toulmin's Argumentation Pattern (TAP) framework. This study indicates an association between students’ grasp of biology concepts and their argumentation skills in the ADI class. The regression equation derived from the data analysis is y = 0.608x + 39.05 with a reliability value of 0.179. Meanwhile, there is no strong correlation between conceptual knowledge and argumentation skills in RQA, ADI-Integrated RQA, or traditional classes. This can be influenced by a variety of factors, including students’ inability to adapt and adjust rapidly to the steps introduced into the learning models. Improving argumentation quality can be accomplished through the use of active and innovative learning models or strategies.

Abstract

Metacognitive skills are one of the abilities required in the twenty-first century, to achieve independent learning. However, these skills still need to review whether these skills have been empowered by educators, particularly in universities. This research was aimed at determining the metacognitive skill profile of Biology Education students at the Institute of Teachers’ Education in South Sulawesi, Indonesia. This research used a descriptive quantitative method. The population of this research was all the students of the Biology Education Study Program at the non-state Institute of Teachers’ Education in South Sulawesi. The samples of this research were 356 Biology Education students in the second semester who programmed the Environmental Science course in the 2020/2021 academic year. The instrument used in this research was an essay test to measure students’ metacognitive skills in the Environmental Science course. The results of the data analysis indicate that the students’ metacognitive skills are in the category of undeveloped as much as 89.27%. Therefore, some efforts to improve students’ metacognitive skills are required by those institutes through the implementation of a learning model which can empower the metacognitive skills of the prospective Biology teacher students.

Abstract

The reality shows that instructors and students are having difficulty implementing online science education during the pandemic. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of collaborative flipped learning (CFL) strategy and socio-cognitive ability on metacognitive skills and self-efficacy in primary school pre-service teachers who were currently enrolled in a Basic Science course. This objective was motivated by the current state of education and teaching, which necessitates the use of technology to facilitate learning activities. This study employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group and a 2 x 2 MANOVA inferential statistical test. Prior to undertaking the inferential statistical test, we ran assumption tests, specifically normality and homogeneity analyses. The analysis results showed that there was a discrepancy in metacognitive skills between students in the experimental class who were taught the CFL strategy and those who were instructed the conventional strategy, indicated by an Fcalculated value of 11.299 and a significance value of 0.001. The analysis results also showed that there was a significant difference in metacognitive skills between students with high socio-cognitive ability and those with poor socio-cognitive ability, indicated by an Fcalculated value of 39.9724 and a significance value of 0.000. It was also found that the interaction between the learning strategy and socio-cognitive ability influenced students’ metacognitive skills. These findings suggest that educators should consider cognitive and social factors while implementing the collaborative flipped learning strategy to help students enhance their metacognitive skills

DOWNLOAD PDFThe aims of study to determine the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of biology-based learning device based on the theory of social constructivism Vygotsky in Senior High School. This study included the type of research development. The development of learning device apply learning development procedure 4-D model which consists of define, design, develop, disseminate step. Results of analysis of research data suggests that the biology of learning  devices  based on the theory of social constructivism Vygotsky in Senior High School achieved the criteria of quailty, they are (1) validity where the validity of the lesson plan reach average 3.77 (very valid category), the validity score of the students book 3.75 (very valid category), and the validity average score of the students worksheet is 3.78 (very valid category). (2) the practicality, where rationally the theory is stated that sitable to be used by experts and practitioners based on the score of validity which very valid category and in real terms in the field has been applied with an overal average of implementation 3.81 (very god implemented category). (3) effectiveness, in which the ability of teachers to manage learning with a value of 3.65 (very high category), the activity levels of students with an ideal time activity, the responses of students with positive responses, and learning test results reached with the level of mastery classically achieve 88.89% mastery.
