Abstract

The community's input on climate change issues in the city of Ternate is urgently needed. The purpose of this study is to document how the people of Ternate City understand and respond to issues of climate change mitigation and conditions. This study used a community-based participatory research method involving 30 people consisting of community members, teachers, lecturers, and students. Focus group discussions (FGD) and photovoices were conducted to obtain data on causes, impacts and solutions to climate change problems in the city of Ternate. The research results confirmed that the people in the city of Ternate feel the negative impacts of climate change in the city, such as reduced water sources, loss of plant vegetation (for example: mangroves, sago and sea grass), reduced marine habitats, floods and landslides at several points, increased sea level. The main causes of climate change in the city of Ternate are the establishment of non-environmentally friendly development policies, the lack of public knowledge and awareness of climate change adaptation, and the lack of regional regulations at the city to village levels related to environmental issues. The solutions offered by the community are very diverse but according to the community, the government and young people need to conduct education, mitigation, and adaptation to climate changes in the city of Ternate.

Abstract

In order to teach future generations, preservice science teachers must possess critical thinking skills. However, relatively few studies have examined these skills at the tertiary level, particularly in elementary school science teacher education departments. This study sought to determine the effect of collaborative group investigation (CGI) learning and self-efficacy on the critical thinking skills of students. With a non-equivalent control group design and a 2 x 2 ANOVA inferential statistical test, a quasi-experimental design was implemented. The subjects of this study were forty science teacher candidates who took the Environmental course at a university in Indonesia. A self-efficacy questionnaire and a test of critical thinking skills constituted the research instruments. The results indicated that the collaborative group investigation group received an average score of 62.2, whereas the direct learning group received an average score of 48.8, with an Fcalculated of 87.626 and a significance value of 0.000. The data analysis revealed substantial differences between the collaborative group inquiry group and the direct learning group in terms of critical thinking skills.  The interplay between learning strategies and self-efficacy affects the critical thinking skills of pupils because collaborative learning practices can engage students actively through teamwork, idea exchange, decision making, and shared responsibilities

Abstract

Past studies rarely reported the contribution of communication skills and digital literacy to students’ critical thinking skills in biology. The present study identified the correlation between communication and digital literacy skills and its contribution to students’ critical thinking skills by implementing three learning models. This study employed a correlational research design and involved all biology education students in Ternate, North Maluku, Indonesia. The research sample included 60 students from IAIN Ternate and STIKIP Kie Raha, Ternate. The study was conducted in the even semester of the 2021/2022 academic year. Data were gathered using a questionnaire, observation sheets, and an essay test. Multiple linear regression analysis showed the simultaneous contribution of communication and digital literacy to critical thinking in the WE-ARe classroom (73.3%); STAD (63.6%); and conventional (50.4%). These results suggest that the contribution of the predictors to critical thinking was higher in the WE-ARe class than in STAD or conventional classes
