Abstract

Tim dosen Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Universitas Borneo Tarakan, Kalimantan Utara, berinisiatif melakukan kegiatan pengabdian di wilayah pesisir kota Tarakan, dengan target para pelajar dari jenjang pendidikan dasar dan menengah. Kegiatan pengabdian difokuskan pada pengajaran bahasa Inggris menggunakan metode STAD dan gamifikasi sebagai strategi pendukungnya. Materi yang diberikan ditekankan pada penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris dan keterampilan berbicara. Metode kegiatan ini adalah pembelajaran kooperatif, strategi gamifikasi, dan pendekatan evaluatif. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan tingkat partisipasi dan antusiasme peserta yang tinggi, terutama dalam aspek penguasaan kosakata aktivitas harian, hewan, buah, sayuran, dan presentasi sederhana. Selain itu, kegiatan ini turut berimplikasi pada motivasi para peserta untuk mempelajari bahasa Inggris.

Abstract

English speaking skill is very crucial because this ability expresses thoughts, feelings, and ideas in real situations through a dynamic and interactive process for personal and professional purposes.  Despite the growing integration of AI-based language learning applications in EFL classrooms, there is still limited empirical evidence on the effectiveness of the ELSA Speak application in improving the speaking skills. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of using ELSA Speak application on speaking skill of 10th grade students of Senior High School in Tarakan. The method employed in this study was a pre-experimental. The sample of this study was class X-5 consisting of 33 students, who were selected through cluster random sampling. The stages of the study were pre-test, treatments, and post-test. Treatment was given for 5 meetings. The pre-test and post-test focused on testing English language skills in the aspects of pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension. Pre-test and post-test data were analyzed statistically using the non-parametric Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. The results of the statistical analysis showed that the p-value of 0.00 was far below the operational standard of 0 05 with a Z score of -5.152 indicating that the treatments using ELSA Speak application showed a significant effect on speaking skill of 10th grade students of Senior High School in Tarakan. The 'study by topic feature in ELSA Speak application was the most effective feature in improving students' speaking skill because it provided contextual and relevant speaking exercises to real-life situations.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of the Community Language Learning (CLL) method in enhancing the speaking skills of seventh-grade students at SMPN 11 Tarakan. Speaking ability is widely acknowledged as a fundamental component of effective communication in both academic and professional contexts; however, it is often regarded as the most challenging language skill to develop due to affective barriers such as anxiety, low self-confidence, and limited vocabulary. The CLL method was selected as an instructional intervention because it emphasizes collaboration, a sense of community, and learner-centered interaction within a supportive learning environment. Using a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design, the study involved 29 students from class VII-2. The findings revealed a statistically significant improvement in students’ speaking performance following the implementation of the CLL method. Specifically, the mean speaking score increased from 38.62 in the pretest to 63.45 in the posttest, indicating that the Community Language Learning method was effective in improving the speaking skills of seventh-grade students.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi dan kinerja dalam proses pembelajaran maupun manajemen pendidikan. Dalam upaya mencapai tujuan tersebut, inisiasi kolaborasi dilakukan dengan Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) jenjang Sekolah Menengah Pertama (SMP). Inisiasi ini didasarkan pada urgensi peningkatan profesionalitas guru sebagai perancang, fasilitator, dan teladan dalam pengintegrasian teknologi pada aktivitas pembelajaran. Penyelenggaraan kegiatan dilakukan secara tatap muka dan daring guna menciptakan fleksibilitas dalam penyampaian materi, praktik eksplorasi, pendampingan, dan evaluasi yang dititikberatkan pada pemahaman dan eksplorasi teknologi bagi elevasi kegiatan pembelajaran di kelas. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan antusiasme peserta selama pelatihan, terutama ketika praktik mengeksplorasi fitur-fitur aplikasi, laman situs, maupun platform untuk diintegrasikan pada pembelajaran bahasa Inggris. Secara keseluruhan, kegiatan ini menghasilkan peningkatan yang signifikan, khususnya pada tingkat kepercayaan diri dan preferensi untuk mengintegrasikan teknologi pada proses merancang dan melaksanakan aktivitas pembelajaran.

Abstract

Background:  Pronunciation is probably one of the most problematic and the conventional teaching approaches do not tend to offer the immediate, personal feedback, which is required to achieve effective pronunciation. But AI speech recognition applications can provide a real-time corrective response that may be used to overcome these drawbacks in teaching. Methodology:  The research utilized a pre experimental one group pre-test post-test study design whose qualitative observations were supported by 30 first-semester students purposely selected to participate in the study. The information was gathered by means of pre- and post-teaching tests, observation forms, and AI-based feedback. The quantitative analysis was based on descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test, and instead, thematic coding based on observation was applied to qualitative data. Findings:  The results showed that the pronunciation of students has been significantly improved, and the average scores have increased by 68.4 to 81.7 (p < 0.05). The qualitative observations revealed the enhancement of the accuracy in the production of segmental characteristics, including the interdental sounds (/θ/, /ð/), voicing contrasts (/v/ vs. /f/), and vowel length differences, and advances in supra segmental characteristics, which included word stress, rhythm, and intonation. Besides, self-confidence, motivation, and independence of the students in practicing pronunciation using AI-supported learning also improved. Conclusion:  AI speech recognition technology is a priceless aid in enhancing the English pronunciation. Feedback that was given to the learners was both regular, individualized, and timely and this resulted to a rise in accuracy and self-regulated learning.  Originality:  The study provides classroom-based evidence concerning the application of AI speech recognition in learning English pronunciation. It shows the possibilities of using AI in teaching pronunciation and increasing the level of learner autonomy and positive results of learning.

Abstract

Penguatan literasi akademik merupakan aspek penting dalam menyiapkan peserta didik Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) agar mampu berpikir kritis, sistematis, dan komunikatif secara ilmiah. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan meningkatkan literasi akademik siswa melalui pelatihan penulisan karya ilmiah di SMAN 1 Tanah Kuning, Kabupaten Bulungan, wilayah strategis yang sedang berkembang pesat. Pelatihan dilaksanakan selama tiga hari dengan melibatkan 20 siswa kelas X dan XI yang dipilih berdasarkan kemampuan akademik, minat menulis, dan komitmen mengikuti Olimpiade Penelitian Siswa Indonesia (OPSI). Metode pelaksanaan meliputi analisis kebutuhan, pelatihan terstruktur, pendampingan intensif, serta evaluasi melalui pretest dan posttest. Hasil analisis menunjukkan adanya peningkatan nilai rata-rata siswa dari 58,5 pada pretest menjadi 68,61 pada posttest. Selain peningkatan kuantitatif, siswa juga menunjukkan perkembangan kualitatif dalam memahami struktur karya ilmiah, menyusun kajian pustaka, menentukan fokus dan kebaruan penelitian, serta merancang metode penelitian secara lebih sistematis. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa pelatihan penulisan karya ilmiah berbasis konteks lokal efektif dalam meningkatkan literasi akademik dan kesiapan siswa menghadapi tantangan akademik lanjutan.

Abstract

ABSTRAKManuskrip pengabdian ini melaporkan program utama Kuliah Kerja Nyata (KKN) Universitas Borneo Tarakan (UBT) di Desa Mendupo, Kecamatan Betayau, Kabupaten Tana Tidung, Kalimantan Utara, yang dilaksanakan pada 22 Desember 2025 s.d. 30 Januari 2026. Kegiatan dilatarbelakangi oleh kebutuhan penguatan kapasitas desa pada aspek kesehatan keluarga, literasi anak, dan pemanfaatan sumber daya lokal yang masih memerlukan pendampingan yang lebih terstruktur. Program dilaksanakan oleh mahasiswa KKN UBT Kelompok 01 dengan mitra kelembagaan utama Pemerintah Desa Mendupo, PKK/kader posyandu, pengelola TBM, dan Karang Taruna, serta melibatkan warga, anak-anak, ibu hamil, dan keluarga balita sebagai sasaran kegiatan. Program dirancang terintegrasi pada tiga kegiatan prioritas: (1) penanaman dan penguatan kebun Tanaman Obat Keluarga (TOGA) sebagai upaya ketahanan kesehatan rumah tangga; (2) penguatan literasi anak melalui revitalisasi Taman Bacaan Masyarakat (TBM) dengan model belajar sambil bermain; dan (3) sosialisasi persuasif pencegahan stunting bagi ibu hamil serta ibu/pengasuh balita. Metode pelaksanaan menggunakan pendekatan critical participatory action research (CPAR) melalui tahapan koordinasi awal dan analisis situasi, perencanaan kolaboratif bersama mitra, pelaksanaan program melalui pendampingan praktik langsung, serta evaluasi-refleksi untuk menyusun tindak lanjut. Keberhasilan kegiatan tidak diukur melalui pretest-posttest formal, tetapi melalui evaluasi formatif berupa observasi partisipatif, logbook, dokumentasi, tanya jawab, tingkat partisipasi, dan refleksi bersama mitra pada akhir rangkaian kegiatan. Hasil menunjukkan meningkatnya pemahaman warga tentang manfaat dan perawatan TOGA, meningkatnya minat anak mengikuti kegiatan TBM ketika dipadukan dengan aktivitas kreatif (mendongeng, menggambar, mewarnai), serta menguatnya pemahaman bahwa stunting tidak semata faktor keturunan, melainkan terkait gizi, pola asuh, dan kebersihan lingkungan pada periode 1.000 HPK. Simpulan pengabdian menegaskan bahwa integrasi program kesehatan-literasi-pemberdayaan sumber daya lokal melalui kemitraan kampus dan desa efektif memperkuat kapasitas masyarakat dan layak direplikasi pada konteks pedesaan serupa.Kata Kunci: TOGA; TBM; Pencegahan Stunting; KKN; Pengabdian Masyarakat. ABSTRACTThis community service manuscript reports the main programs implemented during the University of Borneo Tarakan (UBT) Community Service Program (KKN) in Mendupo Village, Betayau Sub-district, Tana Tidung Regency, North Kalimantan, from 22 December 2025 to 30 January 2026. The activities were initiated in response to the need to strengthen village capacity in family health, children's literacy, and the use of local resources through more structured assistance. The program was carried out by UBT KKN Group 01 students in collaboration with four main institutional partners: the Mendupo Village Government, PKK/posyandu cadres, TBM managers, and Karang Taruna, while community members, children, pregnant women, and families with under-fives served as the main participants. The program integrated three priority activities: (1) the establishment and strengthening of a Family Medicinal Plant (TOGA) garden to support household health resilience; (2) revitalization of the Community Reading Park (TBM) through joyful literacy activities for children; and (3) persuasive education on stunting prevention for pregnant women and caregivers of under-fives. The method adopted a critical participatory action research (CPAR) approach covering initial coordination and situation analysis, collaborative planning with local partners, hands-on implementation, and evaluation-reflection to formulate follow-up actions. Program success was not measured through a formal pretest-posttest design; instead, formative evaluation was conducted through participatory observation, daily logbooks, documentation, question-and-answer sessions, participation records, and joint reflection with partners. Findings indicated that improved community understanding of the benefits and maintenance of medicinal plants, stronger children's engagement in TBM activities when reading was combined with creative tasks (storytelling, drawing, and coloring), and better awareness that stunting is not merely hereditary but is closely related to nutrition, caregiving, and environmental hygiene during the first 1,000 days of life. The manuscript concludes that integrating health, literacy, and local-resource empowerment through village-university partnership can strengthen community capacity and is worthy of replication in similar rural contexts.Keywords: TOGA; Community Reading Park; Stunting Prevention; KKN; Community Service.
