Abstract

This study investigates the direct and indirect effects of digital transformation and climate change awareness on SME financial performance, with green technology adoption serving as a mediating variable. Drawing from stakeholder theory and the resource-based view, this research addresses a key gap in understanding how digital and environmental initiatives interact within halal-oriented small businesses. Empirical data from 192 halal food SME owners and managers in East Java were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) across 32 indicators. Findings reveal that digital transformation significantly enhances both green technology adoption and financial performance, underscoring its strategic value in expanding market access and operational efficiency. While climate change awareness strongly encourages green technology adoption, it lacks a direct financial impact. Notably, green technology adoption shows a negative effect on financial performance, likely due to high initial costs and integration challenges. The study contributes to the literature by demonstrating the complex trade-offs between environmental innovation and profitability in emerging market SMEs. It suggests that digital strategies may serve as a bridge toward sustainability without undermining financial goals. Practical implications include the need for targeted government incentives and support mechanisms to offset green transition costs and bolster competitive resilience in halal food SMEs.

Abstract

Purpose – This study investigates the relationship between Islamic work ethic, job satisfaction, and employee engagement, with transformational leadership as a moderating variable. It aims to assess whether job satisfaction mediates the impact of Islamic work ethic on engagement and if transformational leadership enhances these effects. The research offers insights into how ethical values and leadership styles influence employee engagement at Brangkal Printing. Method – A quantitative approach with a cross-sectional survey design was used, involving all 75 employees at Brangkal Printing through total sampling. Data were gathered using a likert-scale questionnaire to measure Islamic work ethic, job satisfaction, transformational leadership, and employee engagement. The data analysis technique used in this study is partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). Findings – The results reveal that the Islamic work ethic does not directly influence employee engagement but positively impacts job satisfaction, which enhances engagement, confirming the mediating role of job satisfaction. Transformational leadership directly affects engagement but does not significantly moderate the relationships examined. Implications – This research highlights the significance of the Islamic work ethic in improving job satisfaction and engagement while highlighting the context-dependent nature of transformational leadership. It extends existing theories by emphasizing the influence of cultural and ethical values on workplace behavior. Organizations should enhance job satisfaction through a supportive work environment, fair compensation, and career development. Integrating Islamic values into leadership strategies can optimize employee motivation, commitment, and engagement, leading to better performance.

Abstract

This article reviews the concept of Islamic economics related to the role of money according to the thought of Abu Ubaid (154-224 AH). In his work, Kitab Al-Amwal, Abu Ubaid highlights the importance of justice as a fundamental principle. Although written in the past, Abu Ubaid's ideas remain relevant in the current economic and social context, especially in efforts to maintain fairness in wealth distribution and transparency in public financial management. Money in Abu Ubaid's view has a dual role, as a standard and medium of exchange. The principles advocated by Abu Ubaid can be valuable guidelines for policy makers in designing an inclusive and sustainable economic system. Thus, an understanding of Abu Ubaid's thought can provide valuable insights in the development of a just and efficient Islamic economy.
