Abstract

Ebony (Diospyros sp.)  is a heavy hardwood that is  popularly known as blackwood. Diospyros consists of over 300 species spread throughout tropics area and about 100 species occur in Indonesia. Bisbul wood (Diospyros btancoi A.DC.) is one species of  streaked ebony that is locally known as buah mentega.  The anatomical and physical properties of  bisbul  were studied to collect information  for wood identification  and to support appropriate use of the timber. Anatomical properties were studied from microtome sectioned samples, which have been coloured by safranin and mounted by entellan, while fiber dimensions  were studied from macerated samples.  Physical properties  of  bisbul wood studied include moisture content, density and percentage of volumetric shrinkage. Moisture content and density were studied from 20 x 20 x 20 mm samples based on wet and oven dry condition. Volumetric shrinkage was measured from dimension changes in radial, tangential and longitudinal shrinkage of 20 x 20 x 40 mm samples. The samples were measured in wet and oven dry conditions. The main anatomical characteristics to identify bisbul wood were black wood with pinkish streaked, heavy and very hard,  very fine texture, even, lustrous surface and glossy, distinct growth ring, small size of vessels, apotracheal parenchyma forming reticulate pattern. The average moisture content was 59.86 ± 2.84%,  the density average was 0.74 ± 0.04 gr/cm3  and volumetric shrinkage was 10.41±0.70%.   The higher the stem, the more moisture  content and the lower the density will be. Sapwood density was lower and had more moisture  content than heartwood. The black pinkish heavy wood, bisbul was recommended to be used for carvings, sculpture, souvenir and luxuryinterior products.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Exercise such as Diabetes dance of Persadia 1 is the evolvement of prior diabetes dance series with aerobic principle with more eccentric movement. Diabetes dance of Persadia 1 has been inspected effective for lowering fasting blood glucose, but its still unknown about its effect on blood level of total cholesterol. The aim of this research is to analyze the effect of exercise on total cholesterol level. This research is experimental research, with 16 subject of healthy housewifes and divided on 2 groups, that is exercise and control group. Exercise group was given with diabetes dance of Persadia 1 while control group have the unstructured activity. Blood level of total cholesterol (TC) has been measured after 24 hours post single bout exercise (acute-AE) and repeated exercise (chronic exercise-CE). Paired t-test analysis on both acute (AC) (p=0,005) and chronic (CC) (p=0,006) shows TC decrease significantly on control group, as well as on AE (p=0,001) and CE (p=0,001). However, TC tend to increase on CC though not significantly increase (p=0,916), while on CE tend to decrease significantly (p=0,041). This study shows that both acute and cronic exercise decrease total cholesterol level in human blood.

Abstract

We explored association between the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and uric acid (UA) to the middle upper arm circumference (MUAC), waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) amongst seemingly healthy university students in Kediri, Indonesia aged 17-23 years (n=150); no history of major previous diseases were found (i.e. metabolic syndrome). TC and UA measured from the capillary blood; standardised anthropometry measurements were done by trained medical doctors. Correlation, linear regression, independent t-test or Mann-Whitney analysis were performed with the level of significance of p<0.05. We found higher TC (p=0.053), UA (p<0.001), MUAC (p=0.009), HC (p=0.865) and WC (p=0.001) among males than among females. TC was significantly correlated to the UA with prevalence of hypercholesterolemia of 46.7% and hyperuricemia of 30% of all participants. All anthropometry was significantly correlated to the TC and UA among males (p<0.001); TC and UA were strongly corresponded to all anthropometry parameters among males. Hypercholesterolemia and hyperuricemia could be found amongst the seemingly healthy young adults in Indonesia; among males these are strongly correlated to the higher MUAC, WC and HC. Daily physical activity and proper healthy diet might help to decrease these cardiovascular disease risk factors.
