Abstract

We explored association between the levels of total cholesterol (TC) and uric acid (UA) to the middle upper arm circumference (MUAC), waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC) amongst seemingly healthy university students in Kediri, Indonesia aged 17-23 years (n=150); no history of major previous diseases were found (i.e. metabolic syndrome). TC and UA measured from the capillary blood; standardised anthropometry measurements were done by trained medical doctors. Correlation, linear regression, independent t-test or Mann-Whitney analysis were performed with the level of significance of p<0.05. We found higher TC (p=0.053), UA (p<0.001), MUAC (p=0.009), HC (p=0.865) and WC (p=0.001) among males than among females. TC was significantly correlated to the UA with prevalence of hypercholesterolemia of 46.7% and hyperuricemia of 30% of all participants. All anthropometry was significantly correlated to the TC and UA among males (p<0.001); TC and UA were strongly corresponded to all anthropometry parameters among males. Hypercholesterolemia and hyperuricemia could be found amongst the seemingly healthy young adults in Indonesia; among males these are strongly correlated to the higher MUAC, WC and HC. Daily physical activity and proper healthy diet might help to decrease these cardiovascular disease risk factors.

Abstract

Overweight and obesity have been correlated to the higher risk for developing metabolic diseases in later life, i.e. DM type 2. We study the body mass index (BMI), the waist to hip ratio (WHR) and the fasting blood glucose levels (FBG) in the seemingly healthy male and female university students to comprehend these variables amongst the youth in Indonesia in 2019. The BMI and WHR of 150 male and female students aged 18-22 years old of the IIKBW, Kediri were measured by standardised anthropometry. The FBG was measured after 8 hours-minimum of fasting from the capillary blood drop using glucometer. Data was then analysed using SPSS 17 with level of significance of p<0.05. According to Asia-Pacific BMI classification, students were 30.7% obese with males significantly higher than females (p=0.016), 18% overweight (significantly higher in females, p=0.04), 36% normal and 15.3% underweight. When compared between genders, the WHR is significantly higher in males (p<0.001); whilst no significant differences in FBG (p=0.6). Four males and 5 females with FBG ≥ 100 mg/dl, whereas others were within normal limits. There are positive significant correlations between BMI and WHR in males and females (r=0.777, p<0.001; r=0.54, p<0.001, respectively). There is a significant positive correlation between the BMI and FBG with r=0.217, p=0.008; and between the WHR and FBG with r=0.21, p=0.01 amongst all students. In this study, male students have significantly higher BMI and WHR than females. Higher FBG was well observed in students with either higher BMI or WHR.

Abstract

The pandemic of COVID-19 gave a great impact on college students learning activity, especially medical students. Thus, they may become vulnerable to have psychological problems such as anxiety, depression, and stress. The study aimed to investigate anxiety, depression, and stress rates among medical students during the pandemic of COVID-19 and the affecting factors. This cross-sectional study used DASS questionnaire online survey. 312 medical students, a total sampling in Muhammadiyah Palembang University participated in this study. The univariate analysis was used to determine the level of psychological problems while the bivariate analysis was carried out to determine the affecting factors. The study findings showed that 50.6% of the students reportedly had anxiety (12.2 % mild, 17.3% moderate, 10.9% severe, 10.3% very severe), 33% of the students had depression (13.5% mild, 11.9% moderate, 3.8% severe, 3.8% very severe), and 22.4% of the students had stress (10.6% mild, 9.3% moderate, 5.1% severe, 1.3% very severe). There were no differences between gender for anxiety, depression and stress (p=0.335, p=0.261, p=0.134 respectively). Junior students were more anxious than senior students (p=0.015). More than half of medical students experienced anxiety with moderate anxiety mostly during the COVID-19 pandemic, and junior students were more likely to suffer anxiety.

Abstract

Introduction: We examined environmental and genetic factors potentially correlated with the blood glucose and physical fitness in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia to elucidate the predominant cardiovascular disease risk. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study on 68 adults aged 18-22 years. Direct interview was conducted to get socio-economy,  daily diets (rice/ R, snacks and sweets/ SS, veggies and fruits/ VF), daily activity (locomotors and non-locomotors) data. Peripheral blood-GABRA6 and SLC6A4 polymorphisms, fasting blood glucose (FBG), blood pressure, 3 fitness parameters (1 min push-up, 3 minutes step up, pulse rate after 3 minutes step-up) were measured by 2 independent and pre-trained medical doctors. Kruskal-Wallis, Chi-Square, and eta-coefficient tests were used to seek differences between genotypes and correlation strength between variables, respectively (significant if p<0.05). Results: Both gene's genotypes showed significant correlations with the FBG (p=0.042, p=0.013, respectively); GABRA6 polymorphism significantly correlated with SU (p=0.033). There was a significant difference in the FBG between 2 VF subgroups (p=0.02). Strongest association was found between FBG and SLC6A4 (η=0.3); PR and GABRA6 (η=0.168), PU and SLC6A4 (η=0.38); SU and Locomotors (η=0.237). Conclusions: In these seemingly healthy young adults, daily diets and the genotypes of both genes have a good association with the FBG and physical fitness levels.

Abstract

Reading aloud or read aloud is a method of reading texts aloud using reading media in the form of illustrated textbooks accompanied by expressions, intonation and interaction between the reader and listener. Reading aloud can be done by parents, especially mothers, both housewives and also working mother. It can impact a child's focus and attention span and stimulates discussion and interaction. This study aims to determine the relationship between the habit of reading aloud by working mothers and the language development of their children aged 4-6 years in Kindergartens Xaverius 3, 4 and 9, Palembang. The type of research used is analytical observational with a cross sectional design. The population of this study were working mothers with children aged 4-6 years who attended kindergartens Xaverius 3, 4 and 9, Palembang. The sample used was 40 respondents who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data collection was carried out using a read aloud questionnaire and a pre-development screening questionnaire (KPSP). The results of the univariate analysis provide an overview of the frequency distribution regarding the mother's last education, the mother's occupation, the habit of reading books using the read aloud method, and the language development of children aged 4-6 years. Meanwhile, bivariate analysis carried out using the chi-square test obtained a p-value of 0.025 (P<0.05) so we can conclude that there is a significant relationship between the habit of reading aloud and the language development of children aged 4-6 years.
