Abstract

This article will explain the exploitative practices of Pulau Sembilan’s fishermen and their environmental consequences in internal and external contexts. Case materials utilized for the explanation are the data about dominant fishing such as collecting teripang, catching fish by dinamite and voison gained by field research. The exploitative practices are characterized by overexploitation and coral reef degradation. Contextual explanation uses the application and development of action and consequence approach with contextual mode of explanation in ecological anthropology. By applying these approach and mode, the internal/local socio-culture and the external forces (export-market situation, adoption of technological innovation, and government policies) are found as contributing to the various exploitative patterns of behaviour and their environmental consequences.

Abstract

This article discusses the directive speech acts contained in tembang dolanan. Using a pragmatic approach, particularly the framework of speech act theory, this article analyzes the different types of directive speech acts, the context which it embodies, and the level of decency. The data used in this research consisted of various tembang dolanan that contain directive statements. These data were analyzed using interpretation and inference by presenting it in the form of descriptive analysis. Descriptive analysis is meant to describe, systematically illustrating or elaborating the facts and relationships between phenomena. In the dolanan song, directive speech acts can be expressed directly or indirectly. Direct expression is conventionally used to rule, invite, and forward, while indirect expression is used when instead of by a command line, the intention is ruled by statement sentences, obligation-stating sentences, and questions. The use of direct speech acts generally does not have the value of politeness because they tend to still contain elements of coercion, have no effort to obscure the form of an order, and show the superiority of the speakers. On the other hand, the use of indirect speech acts seems to be an attempt to obscure the commandments to be more polite in the hope opponents would happily respond to commands.

Abstract

Based on a library research, this paper aims at introducing the police procedural as a subgenre of detective genre. To achieve the aim, this paper elaborately discusses three definitions of the police procedural. The discussion shows that experts have apparently provided a working definition of the police procedural after having identified how the new variant is different from, and yet the same as the “parent” genre. While the third definition discussed puts emphasis on the authentic and realistic aspects of the police procedural, the first two definitions can be used as a reference to elaborately discuss the police procedural as a variant or subgenre of the detective genre. The police procedural retains the basic conventional elements of the detective genre—plot and motifs, character, setting, theme, and props, but it twists these elements and turn them into inventions to keep the interest of the readers and viewers. Having established itself as a subgenre, the police procedural grows to become formulaic by creating its own conventions. It is a formula that is generally employed by writers and has come to be expected by readers or viewers. By doing so, the police procedural has helped the detective genre as its “parents” genre stay popular.

Abstract

Dukun, wong pinter, and other terms, commonly constitutes to the term of shamanism, are often interpreted in the same way. In particular, the dukun and wong pinter are generally understood as persons who have extraordinary or even supernatural powers, are capable of communicating with spirits and understanding the unseen, can generally help resolve issues faced by members of their communities, including illnesses, spiritual disturbances, lost items, unfortunate fates, etc. They are also predicated to charge to the patient and even willing to help witchcraft to harm other people. In fact, not all shamans have negative behaviors. In Temanggung, Central Java, though this general understanding is still common, there is distinction in the specific details and characteristics of the dukun and wong pinter. Dukun are often understood negatively, meanwhile the wong pinter has more positive connotations. Because of the different principle meaning the both terms should not be generalized and used appropriately and wisely. Improper use can cause discomfort in the community, and academically the both term actually refers to a completely different subject characteristics.

Abstract

Worldviews are an important part of human life because they illustrate the ways people think and act. This article aims to review studies conducted by scholars, definitions of the term "worldview", and scientists' explorations of worldviews, and to examine how such categories may be applied to capture reality. This study concludes that worldviews have been the focus of intensive studies since the 1980s. Many scientists have defined the concept of "worldview" and attempted to explain its dynamics. Studies of worldviews can be grouped into several paradigms. Because of the extent of the study area, theoretically worldviews can be classified into several categories based on, for example, views of self and others, time, space, relationships, and causation. In reality, the worldview of a society can be seen in how members of the society live in relation to God, nature, people, and the environment. In examining the worldviews held in social reality, the specific categories mapped by scholars must be made congruent with the realities in the field, because sometimes these categories are interrelated and difficult to understand separately.

Abstract

There are two important things in Indonesian culture and their relationships to one another, namely the diversity of Indonesian culture and the meaning of cultural diversity for the development of Indonesian culture. In Indonesia cultural diversity is a reality and facts, but also the ideology of nation and state. Therefore, diversity is one of the main characteristics of Indonesian society, both on the outer (physical), and the inner (spiritual). This has a profound impact on the way in which the Indonesians address diversity and difference in everyday life. On the one hand, diversity then takes a form of values that guide the people of Indonesia to address the wide range of diversity and differences, as well as a variety of behavior patterns that are open to it. On the other hand, it manifests itself in a variety of creative culture that is very diverse and hybrid in pattern. In such situations, the authenticity and origins of the elements of foreign culture that come to Indonesia are not considered to be very important. Even more important is the role or the contribution of the various elements of foreign cultures to the development of local and national cultures of Indonesia, as well as for the Indonesian people wherever they are. Keywords: culture, diversity, hybrid, ideology
