Abstract

This article argues that the emergence of contents related to the Rambu Solo ritual on social media is a manifestation of the hegemonic ideology that was digitalized by the new generation of Toraja. Using the theoretical framework of mediatization, this article aims to explore how the hegemony of Rambu solo ritual operates in social media context. By using virtual ethnography method, it can be explained that the mediatization of the hegemony of Rambu Solo rituals on social media are basically implying three things; firstly, the narrative about the Rambu Solo ritual on social media has given birth to a new form of interaction and communication in a broader scope; secondly, the narrative of Rambu Solo ritual on social media has made the media as a new domain to find meanings about the Rambu Solo ritual; and third, the narrative of Rambu Solo ritual indicates the accommodation efforts of the Torajanese new generation towards the rules that apply in the context of social media with the general characteristics of user-generated content. The Torajanes new generation has voluntarily "continued" this ritual hegemony.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the interreligious encounter experiences of patients and their families who have diverse religious backgrounds and come to religiously affiliated hospitals (different from their religion). The main question raised is how this experience strengthens their recognition and respect toward other religions, so they are enabled to build amicable interreligious relations. This study is necessary especially in the context of Yogyakarta, which claims itself as ‘City of Tolerance,’ but unfortunately, this claim and image have faded because of many cases of intolerance in multiple social settings, such as school, campus, worship place, religious event, boarding house, even also cemetery. Meanwhile, in Yogyakarta, three major religiously affiliated hospitals have served Yogyakarta residents for tens to hundreds of years, namely Bethesda, Panti Rapih, and PKU Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. Following Peter L. Berger, this paper argues that hospital can be seen as a unique social setting, in which pluralism as empirical experience truly happens because, in terms of attitude, the hospital is an institution that is in its service should practice no discrimination toward people from a different background (ethnicity or religiosity) related to service for humanity. Therefore hospital will be a place of encounter for people from various backgrounds and identities. Within the religiously affiliated hospital, pluralism is not only a formal philosophical concept but a social situation in which people with different ethnicities, religions, worldviews, and moralities live together peacefully and interact with each other amicably.

Abstract

In the period 1975-2010 Tasikmalaya Regency Government has made tourism development in Kampung Naga. The purpose was to improve the economic life of Kampung Naga community. However, the Kampung Naga community responded negatively to that development. Why did the Kampung Naga community respond negatively to the development of tourism, whereas that development could improve the life of its economist? The purpose of this study is to describe the response form of Kampung Naga community to the tourism development and to understand the cause of the response. The research method used is a historical method, namely heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography. Collecting data are using literature studiies and oral history interviews. Interactive model is used to analyze data. The result of this study shows that the negative response form of Kampung Naga community toward tourism development happened gradually from local scale to national scale. The response was caused by the difference of the meaning to the concept of tourism. Abstract

The relationship between humans and space is one of the many human relations studied by anthropologists. In relation to archaeological studies, the form of this relationship is evident in human settlements and the patterns they produce, whether consciously or not. Settlement patterns are an embodiment (expression) of the human conception of space, and are the result of human efforts to change and utilize their physical environment based on their views and knowledge about the environment.

Abstract

In this article the author identifies and describes three kinds of traditional arts in Indonesia: the arts of the Great Tradition, of the Little Tradition and of the Tribal Tradition. These kinds of tra-ditional arts need to be preserved and developed since they have  a number of functions for the so-cieties, namely: as tourist attractions; identities of their communities/societies; source of inspira-tions for the creation and development of new arts. In Indonesia, the efforts are hindered by several problems, such as the decline of the popularity of the traditional arts, lack of regeneration, lack of institutional support, and lack of grand design for the development. These problems need to be solved to develop the Indonesian traditional arts.

Abstract

Rambu Solo ritual has been an inseparable part of the Toraja people for hundreds of years. Nevertheless, this luxurious funeral ritual had experienced various organic crises as new social forces emerged. Using ethnographic methods, this paper attempts to explore how traditional leaders of Toraja maintain the existence of this ritual. Using Gramsci’s theory of hegemony, this article argues that their efforts were carried out in three phases. Firstly, political awareness phase, namely as aristocrat elites, they legitimized the feudal and religious authority of Aluk Todolo belief system that supported the Rambu Solo ritual through modern political strategies; secondly, the phase of solidarity of interests which carried out by negotiating and building commitment with social forces opposing the Rambu Solo ritual; and third, the phase of reaching consensus from the subaltern group is done by involving them in the Pasilaga Tedong betting, one of a series of Rambu Solo rituals where they see it as a medium to show empathy for grieving families rather than betting.
