Abstract

Cep-cepan leaves (Saurauia cauliflora DC.) have an antidiabetic effect due to the flavonoid compounds contained in them. As an antidiabetic so that it can be an alternative treatment for diabetes that is beneficial to improve quality of life, control diabetes and efficiency of medical costs. The approach employed in addressing antidiabetes involves the exploration of novel antidiabetic chemicals derived from medicinal plants. The Karo people in Medan, North Sumatra frequently utilize the cep-cepan plant (Saurauia Cauliflora DC.), a member of the Fagaceae family, as a medicinal remedy.  The objective of this study is to investigate the impact and optimal dosage of cep cepan leaves produced by Saurauia cauliflora DC. The present study employs an experimental design utilizing a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study was carried out in Langkat Regency between May and December 2023. The population in this study was cep cepan as much as 5kg. The research sample was 3kg of cep cepan leaves taken by purposive sampling which had been dried. The dried cep cepan leaves were then blended to obtain a fine powder. Rats used in this study were rats that had blood glucose levels >200 mg/dl. Data analysis with the post hoc test used was the Mann-Whitney U Test, processing research data using SPSS software version 23. The results showed that the administration of Cep Cepan (Saurauia cauliflora DC.) leaf extract to mice (Mus musculus) at a dose of 200 mg/kg Body Weight/day for 12 days can reduce blood glucose levels in Balb/C male mice (Mus musculus) which is equivalent to glibenclamide. Keywords: Diabetes Mellittus, Mus Musculus ,Saurauia cauliflora Dc, Streptozotocin

Abstract

The Bintangur plant is a plant that can often be found around the house, its existence as a plant makes its properties less known to the public, all parts of this plant are known to be very useful for various pharmacological effects. Various efforts to prevent diseases transmitted by Culex sp. one of them uses larvicides, so an alternative larvicide from natural ingredients is needed, namely Bintangur. The purpose of this study was to determine the activity of the ethanol extract of Bintangur leaves in killing Culex sp larvae with the control being the larvae that were not given the ethanol extract of Bintangur leaves. The type of research on the activity test of the Bintangur leaf ethanol extract used an experimental research type with a true experiment design with a posttest only control group design. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Bintangur leaves (Chalophyllum Inophyllum L.) was active in killing Culex sp. larvae. with the results of the Reed and Muench test with an LC50 value of 281.84 ppm

Abstract

Antioxidants are compounds that can inhibit oxidation reactions by binding to free radicals and highly reactive molecules. Bintangur contains saponins, tannins, flavonoids and alkaloids. In the presence of flavonoids, the purpose of this study is to understand the antioxidant activity of ethanol extracts against DPPH free radicals, and the IC50 parameter has the highest antioxidant activity. Use ethanol to macerate Bintangur leaf powder. Analyze the content of secondary metabolites in ethanol extracts. Use a spectrophotometer to test the antioxidant activity of the obtained extract against DPPH free radicals at a wavelength of 517 nm, and determine the IC50 value. Routine was used as a positive control in this study. The results of three repeated studies showed that the IC50 values of the ethanol extract were 65.49 ppm, 65.76 ppm, and 65.76 ppm, respectively. Average IC50 value is 55.67 ppm.

Abstract

Background. Moringa leaves are a part of the Moringa tree that contain various macro and micronutrients as well as active substances that function as antioxidants. They contain important nutrients such as iron (Fe), calcium, vitamins, and protein. Moringa leaves are also used as the main ingredient in medicines for prevention and treatment. The iron content in Moringa leaves can be utilised in the management of anaemia. To enhance the utilisation of Moringa leaves, scientific evidence is required to prove their effect on increasing haemoglobin (Hb) levels. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the ethanol extract of Moringa leaves on increasing haemoglobin levels in white rats induced by NaNO2 solution. Methodology. An experimental method with a pretest-posttest control group design was used. The rats were randomly divided into 5 groups, and then orally induced with NaNO2 solution for 18 days. Group I was given 0.5% Na CMC; Group II was given ethanol extract of Moringa leaves at 125 mg/kg BW/day; Group III was given ethanol extract of Moringa leaves at 250 mg/kg BW/day; Group IV was given ethanol extract of Moringa leaves at 375 mg/kg BW/day; and Group V was given Sangobion supplement at a dose of 4.5 mg/200 g BW/day. The treatments were administered for 14 days. The Hb levels of the rats were measured on days 7 and 14 after treatment. Results. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera L.) at doses of 125 mg/kgBW, 250 mg/kgBW, and 375 mg/kgBW led to a significant increase in Hb values on days 7 and 14 (P < 0.05). Conclusion. The ethanol extract of Moringa leaves (Moringa oleifera L.) is effective in significantly increasing haemoglobin levels in white rats induced by NaNO₂ (p < 0.05).

Abstract

Castanopsis Costata (Blume.) A. DC. leaves are traditionally used for medicinal purposes and are known to be rich in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and alkaloids. However, scientific validation regarding their safety profile remains limited. This study aimed to evaluate the acute toxicity effects of ethanol extract from Castanopsis Costata leaves on the renal histopathology of white rats (Rattus norvegicus). The study used a pretest and posttest in the experimental design method. Twenty-five male rats were randomly assigned into five groups and orally administered the ethanol extract at doses of 5, 50, 300, 2000, and 5000 mg/kg body weight for seven consecutive days. On the eighth day, the rats were euthanized, and kidney tissues were collected for microscopic examination. Data normality and homogeneity were assessed before conducting one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's HSD post hoc test. Histopathological evaluation revealed no significant morphological alterations in renal tissues across all treatment groups. Statistical analysis confirmed that the data were normally distributed and homogeneous (p > 0.05). One-way ANOVA indicated no significant nephrotoxic effects associated with extract administration across the tested doses (p = 0.023). The ethanol extract of Castanopsis Costata leaves exhibited no observable renal toxicity at doses up to 5000 mg/kg body weight in white rats, suggesting its potential safety for further pharmacological exploration. Future studies should assess sub chronic and chronic toxicity to establish a more comprehensive safety profile Keywords: Castanopsis Costata, Ethanol Extract, Renal Histopathology, Acute Toxicity, White Rats
