Abstract

Water quality is the main factor that has a major influence on the growth and survival of Tilapia Larasati (Oreochromis niloticus). Nitrosomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. can optimize water quality through nitrification and denitrification processes and optimize feed utilization. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using probiotic Nitrosomonas sp. and Bacillus sp. in O. niloticus maintenance media in improving water quality and growth. The method used was CRD with 4 treatments and 3 replications, namely treatment A (without probiotic), B (probiotic 1.0 µL/L), C (probiotic 1.5 µL/L), and D (probiotic 2.0 µL/L). This study used an aquarium measuring 40 x 30 x 40 cm filled with 20 liters of fresh water, and filled with 10 fish weighing 6.97 ± 0.20 g each (density of 1 fish/2 liters). Molasses as feed bacteria and probiotics were given according to the treatment dose. Siphon was accomplished twice a week according to the level of turbidity. Water changes once a week as much as 50 - 60%. The results from the study showed that the use of probiotics had a significant effect (P<0,05) in improving water quality and fish growth. The best result observed from treatment C, with the reduce ammonia and nitrite (0.002 and 1.291 mg/L), highest fish growth, specific growth rate, and survival rates (14.63±0.24 g; 2.48±0.01%/day; and 97±0,06%, respectively), and also lowest feed conversion ratio (1.07±0.02). Based on these results, the best dose for improving water quality and growth of O. niloticus is 1.5 µL/L.Key words: aquaculture, bioflock, organic matter, sludge, waste

Abstract

Gracilaria sp. has a high economic value, which can be cultivated in monoculture or polyculture with other cultivars, such as milkfish (Chanos chanos Forsk). Polyculture of Gracilaria sp. with milkfish can increase the growth of Gracilaria sp. because the metabolic products of milkfish are helpful as a source of nutrients for Gracilaria sp. This study aimed to (1) examine the effect of Gracilaria sp. cultivation in monoculture and polyculture with milkfish on the growth of Gracilaria sp. and (2) the nutrient content of the water. This study used an experimental method with two treatments and three replications using six (6) earth ponds: Gracilaria sp. monoculture and polyculture with milkfish. Growth and nutrient content (nitrate and phosphate) data were analyzed using a t-test. The results of the study showed that the growth of Gracilaria sp. polyculture with milkfish provided absolute growth of 3615.89 ± 330.84 g; Relative Growth Rate (RGR) 180.79 ± 16.54 %; and Specific Growth Rate (SGR) 2.29 ± 0.13 %/day were significantly higher, compared with the growth of Gracilaria sp. monoculture. Monoculture Gracilaria sp showed absolute growth of 1912.71 ± 386.94 g; RGR 95.64 ± 19.35 %; and SGR 1.48 ± 0.22 %.day-1. Nutrient content in polyculture pond waters revealed nitrate 1.08 ± 0.09 mg.L-1 and phosphate 0.18 ± 0.04 mg.L-1 were significantly higher compared to nutrient content in monoculture pond waters which were nitrate 0.71 ± 0.22 mg.L-1 and 0.07 ± 0.04 mg.L-1. Polyculture Gracilaria and seaweed provide higher production due to the enrichment from nutrient content.

Abstract

Blood glucose levels are influenced by carbohydrate and fiber intake. A diet high in carbohydrates and low in fiber can elevate blood glucose levels. The impact of carbohydrate and fiber intake is mediated by masticatory function, which depends on the occlusal contact of the posterior teeth. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the occlusal support zone and blood glucose levels, with the frequency of carbohydrate and fiber consumption actingas moderating variables. This research employed an observational analytic design using a cross-sectional method. The sample consisted of 33 elderly individuals, aged 60 to 74 years, from Kalibening Village, Dukun Subdistrict, Magelang Regency, selected through accidental sampling. Blood glucose levels were measured using the Accu-Chek test, occlusal support zones were assessed with the Eichner index, and the frequency of carbohydrate and fiber intake was recorded through a 4-day food diary questionnaire. The examination data were analyzed using pathanalysis. The results of the analysis showed no significant direct relationship between the occlusal support zone and blood glucose levels (p = 0.76; r = 0.003). However, when the frequency of carbohydrate consumption was included as a moderating variable, a significant relationship was found (p = 0.008). In contrast, when the moderating variable was the frequency of fiber consumption (p = 0.97), no significant relationship was observed. The study concludes thatthere is a relationship between the occlusal support zone and blood glucose levels in the elderly, with the frequency of carbohydrate consumption as a moderating variable. However, no relationship was found between the occlusal support zone and blood glucose levels when the frequency of fiber consumption was the moderating variable.

Abstract

Background: Cement industry workers are exposed to significant oral health risks due to hazardous conditions, but the role of social determinants in this context is not well understood. Purpose: This study investigates the association between social determinants and oral health among factory and office workers in the cement industry. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at PT. Semen Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. A stratified random sample of 83 workers was selected. Social determinants were assessed using World Health Organization (WHO) 2013 and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) questionnaires, while oral health was evaluated using decayed, missing, and filled teeth index (DMF-T), community periodontal index (CPI), and inspection. Ten calibrated dentists conducted dental examinations. Multiple linear regression was used for data analysis. Results: Factory workers exhibited higher rates of dental caries (95.83%), periodontal disease (87.50%), abrasion (91.67%), and attrition (87.50%), compared to office workers. Social determinants significantly associated with dental caries in factory workers included age, sugar intake, tooth-brushing frequency, and last dental check-up (r2 = 0.573), while only sugar intake was associated with caries in office workers (r2 = 0.290). For periodontal disease determinants associated with age, psychosocial factors, and smoking (r2 = 0.558) were significant in factory workers, whereas, in office workers, age, sugar intake, tooth-brushing frequency, last dental check-up, and smoking were significantly associated (r2 = 0.870). Age was the only significant determinant of abrasion and attrition in both groups. Conclusion: Social determinants influence oral health among cement industry workers, especially factory workers, due to physiological and psychological changes caused by working conditions. However, office workers also face oral health challenges due to poor oral health behaviors.

Abstract

Primary teeth play a vital role as masticatory organs that support the digestive process in children. Preterm low birth weight (PTLBW) is a significant public health concern in many countries and may adversely affect children’s overall health. Understanding the patterns and timing of primary tooth eruption in PTLBW children is important, as it can provide valuable insights for clinical management, including the monitoring of dental development and the implementation of early interventions. This study presents a comprehensive scoping review of the literature on PTLBW and primary tooth eruption. The review followed the framework proposed by Arksey and O’Malley and was further refined using the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) methodology for scoping reviews. Literature searches were conducted in electronic databases, including Scopus and PubMed, covering publications from the past 10 years. Eight studies met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed in this review. The findings indicate that PTLBW children experience delayed eruption of primary teeth. Future prospective studies are needed to identify potential biomarkers or predictive indicators for delayed eruption, as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of early treatment interventions on dental development and oral health outcomes in this population.
