Abstract

The use of Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) is rarely applied mostly in courtroom discourse analysis. This article presents the analysis of modality system used in the lawyer and witness’s utterances on courtroom questioning in cross-examination. The main focus is to explore the lawyer’s linguistic power to examine the facts given by the witness. Applying the interpersonal grammatical metaphor, the utterances are evaluated based on the different types, orientations, and values of modality in order to show a powerful position and to convince the jury toward the facts.  This is a case study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The data are taken from the transcriptions of the courtroom questioning between the lawyer and the witness of Michigan V Charles Warren’s case from YouTube (2015). This case study revealed that most of the utterances produced by the lawyer contain a higher and more medium value of modality system. Then, the way he states the argument tends to be more objective. On the other hand, the witness tends to use medium and low modality system. In answering the questions, subjectivity is employed more by the witness which indicates that he has a personal attitude toward the state of affairs. It can be indicated that the lawyer has more linguistic power by applying more high value of modality system which means that he makes the facts strongly clearer toward the state of affairs at the time. The implication of this research is expected to give the information to the reader on how language can provide power to the user especially for the lawyer in order to examine the facts given by the witness

Abstract

This study explores the representation of social actors, both in the Indonesian and Australian governments on the Trade and Economic Partnership through Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The issue focuses on both governments partnership published in the Jakarta Post during 2014-2018. Using Critical Discourse Analysis as an approach, this article analyses the media exclusion and inclusion strategies of social actors. By applying descriptive qualitative methods, result shows that the dominant strategy is the inclusion strategy. The use of inclusion strategy indicates specifications, individualization and categorization of positive reaction and support of The Jakarta Post towards the Indonesian government on trade and economic partnership between Indonesia and Australia. However, the use of exclusion strategy is aim to hide the social actors in the discourse and to divert reader's attention to the object rather than the subject discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the memes created by Nurhadi-Aldo, a fictional presidential candidate. Data is collected from Nurhadi-Aldo’s Instagram profile. The descriptive qualitative approach was used and the sampling procedure carried out was purposive sampling. To analyze the data and to uncover the hidden values, the three-dimension analysis proposed by Fairclough (2001) was used. The first dimension was textual analysis where the textual and visual sign of the presidential memes were examined. The second dimension was the analysis of the discursive practice surrounding the production of Nurhadi-Aldo memes. And the last was the sociocultural practice analysis that deals with how Indonesian internet users reacted to this viral phenomenon. The result points out that the memes represent the visualization of public social critics toward a political condition in Indonesia. With regards to the content creator, Nurhadi-Aldo’s memes further indicate the scepticism value of Indonesian youth. These findings further confirm that the function of the meme is not limited to entertainment purpose only, but also to deliver political criticism. Hence, it is expected that the findings will give more insights into how certain values can be delivered through the use of everyday text, such as memes.

This study is a part of discourse analysis which aims to discover types of intertextuality in the article and to reveal its social practice (discursive practice). The study follows Fairclough (2003) view of language in use: as an element of social life which is closely interconnected with other elements, therefore this study applied descriptive qualitative method. The results show Implicit Quotation and Indirect Quotation are dominantly used in the articles. Implicit Quotation used as strategy to throw arguments, and Indirect Quotation is used to bring authoritative voice from outside into the articles. The discursive practice of intertextuality in the articles is showing an informal discussion, but still having an academic sense in newspaper article to make it sounds such an authoritative discussion. Therefore, people who read the article would acknowledge the writers’ idea and believe their argument and opinion.  Keywords: intertextuality, discursive practice, discourse, online newspaper, opinion article

Abstract

Google Translate is widely used among students for translation purposes, but its Arabic-Indonesian translations often require significant re-editing due to issues with accuracy and quality. These limitations highlight the need for improved translation learning methods to enhance the quality of Arabic-Indonesian translations. This study aims to analyze the types of errors found in Arabic-Indonesian machine translation and introduce the Ngalodern method, rooted in Indonesian local wisdom, to improve translation quality. A descriptive analysis method was employed, combining eclectic theories to achieve the study’s objectives. The research was conducted in three stages; first, data collection through questionnaires and interviews; second, data analysis using the translational equivalent method to identify accurate meanings and the distributional method to describe grammatical errors; and third presenting the data in tables showing the percentage of translation errors in Islamic studies texts. The Ngalodern method was described in a descriptive framework. The study identified translation errors at the levels of morphemes, words, phrases, and clauses. Additionally, Ngalodern learning, based on Sundanese cultural wisdom and critical literacy, was developed as a teaching strategy for Arabic-Indonesian translation improvement in educational contexts. The findings demonstrate that Ngalodern learning significantly enhances students’ ability to edit and improve Arabic-Indonesian machine translation results. This method offers a culturally relevant and effective approach to developing translation skills.
