Abstract

In the pandemic of covid-19 that has spread worldwide, health workers become heroes that stand on the frontline of the battle to fight the coronavirus, and ‘public enemies’ as well, they are also the people who interact directly with the virus through their patients. The case of nurses’ expulsion from boarding house, has proved that society around them is afraid of being contaminated by the virus through their interaction with health workers. This study was conducted using Critical Discourse Analysis study (CDA) through the three dimensions by Van Dijk (1997) upon the texts to describe and to analyze the social actors involved in the case of nurses’ expulsion from boarding house along with their roles in constructing public opinion through online news; to describe and to analyze the forms of power abuses and social inequality used by the social actors involved in this case which construct public opinions. The object of the study is taken from online article about a review about the nurses’ expulsion from boarding house in Solo, central Java, in pikiran-rakyat.com. The source of data analysis was the text of the review itself, and the public comments about the issue. The analysis upon the social actors’ attitudes and utterances, including the public’s comment about the issue showed that the bad person can be the victim as well, depends on the construction upon public opinion.

Abstract

This research focuses on the material processes that are applied in the text of Life Insurance. The data is obtained from the brochures of Life Insurance in several companies. The collected data are taken randomly. This research discusses two main points: 1) the lexical verb describes the type of material process, and 2) the role of participants are used in the material process within the text. They are analyzed based on the theory of systemic functional linguistic focus on transitivity (material process) by Halliday (2014). This research applies the descriptive qualitative method that uses two techniques. First, selects and collects the clauses. Second, analyze and describes the clause based on the research questions. The result of the research reveals that the lexical verb describes the type of material processes in the text of life insurance. The verbs are an offer, receive, protect, provide, customize, request, access, earn, allow, decrease, increase, lock, change, add, choose, take, pay, buy, build, work, help, and give. Then, the roles of participants are involved in the text such as actor, goal, and recipient.

Abstract

COVID-19 information is massively reported by media and social network focus not only on the spreading and infection but also on the government’s prevention in handling the pandemic. Thus this study, under Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA) and by using Appraisal System as a tool for textual analysis, is aimed to gain insight and understanding regarding how Indonesia government’s prevention of COVID-19 in the beginning of pandemic crisis are presented in media, specifically The Jakarta Post. The result shows to some extents. Firstly Appraisal System used in the text analysis level presents that the news report published by The Jakarta Post is overridden by the voice placing the government as the target of negative JUDGMENT. Secondly, Appraisal System analysis leads to explanatory critique of the news text regarding reader positioning. The lack of representations of other choice positively or neutrally on the text strongly give the dynamic-negative meaning to the target audience.

Abstract

This research is entitled “Inclusion Strategies Used by The United States Newspapers Published in COCA in Representing Islam”. The data of this research are sentences containing inclusion strategies in the news related to Islam, and those news are taken from the United States newspapers published in Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA). The objectives of this research are to describe and analyze the inclusion strategies used by the United States newspapers published in COCA in representing Islam. The analysis of this research was done by using qualitative and descriptive research methods proposed by Nassaji (2015). This study uses the theory of inclusion strategies proposed by Van Leeuwen (2008). This study shows that the use of inclusion strategies such as differentiation-indifferentiation, nomination-identification, abstraction-objectivation, determination-indetermination, and association-dissociation are commonly used by US newspapers in representing Islam as a social actor in the news. The use of inclusion strategies mostly appear in negative news relating to Islam, and this causes Islam as a social actor often poorly represented in the media. Abstract

The use of Systemic Functional Linguistics proposed by Halliday and Matthiessen (2004) is rarely applied mostly in courtroom discourse analysis. This article presents the analysis of modality system used in the lawyer and witness’s utterances on courtroom questioning in cross-examination. The main focus is to explore the lawyer’s linguistic power to examine the facts given by the witness. Applying the interpersonal grammatical metaphor, the utterances are evaluated based on the different types, orientations, and values of modality in order to show a powerful position and to convince the jury toward the facts.  This is a case study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The data are taken from the transcriptions of the courtroom questioning between the lawyer and the witness of Michigan V Charles Warren’s case from YouTube (2015). This case study revealed that most of the utterances produced by the lawyer contain a higher and more medium value of modality system. Then, the way he states the argument tends to be more objective. On the other hand, the witness tends to use medium and low modality system. In answering the questions, subjectivity is employed more by the witness which indicates that he has a personal attitude toward the state of affairs. It can be indicated that the lawyer has more linguistic power by applying more high value of modality system which means that he makes the facts strongly clearer toward the state of affairs at the time. The implication of this research is expected to give the information to the reader on how language can provide power to the user especially for the lawyer in order to examine the facts given by the witness

Abstract

Human’s head takes the most important part in human’s part of body which leads to the frequent use of  head in language uses. This study therefore aims to investigate how head is conceptualized through the use of metaphor in Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and how the conceptual metaphors are projected through image schemas. The data were obtained  from Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) as a rich data sources relevant to the study. This study applied qualitative descriptive study through the framework of the Conceptual Metaphor Theory (CMT)  proposed by Lakoff and Johnson (2008). Sentences which contain head metaphors were selected, analyzed, and categorized to relevant conceptual metaphors through the bridge of mappings to characterize the relationship between two concepts (source and target domains) in the metaphorical process and image schemas.  The findings of the study showed that head is mostly metaphorically used as a container which is conceptualized as a head is a container. The most image schemas used are containment schemas which show in-out,  full-empty,  and surface schemas. The image-schemas have indeed been shown to likely become the basis of numerous metaphorical constructions and have been helpful to understand how people cognize their world.

Abstract

This study is preliminary research of lexical bundles in the corpus of Indonesian and English research articles that focuses on analysis of frequency and distribution. This study aims to acquire list of common lexical bundles in applied linguistics articles and describes the patterns of bundle use. The most frequent lexical bundles investigated by frequency criteria reflect the common pattern of bundle use in each corpus. Frequency-based approach to multi-word combination enables us to acquire reliable results because of its statistical test in authentic language data. The result shows that the most numerous bundles are 3-word length and surprisingly, 5-word bundles it can be concluded that occurs in the top 20 rank in Indonesian corpus. The comparison between corpora reflects that the bundles across text section are identical. Although there are the same bundles used in both corpora, the typical bundles with high score of frequency and range are found to characterize the different group of writers. The distributional patterns show that there is the presence of popular bundles in English and Indonesian writers. The top rank lists emphasize that the common lexical bundle structures are phrase-based in expert level. Practically, this study can play role in English for Academic Purposes (EAP) to recommend prevalent patterns of lexical bundle use in the form of pedagogically useful list of word combination. The findings can also be used for non-native writers or scholars especially Indonesian writers to enrich the use of lexical bundles across sections in language and linguistics field.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of social actors, both in the Indonesian and Australian governments on the Trade and Economic Partnership through Critical Discourse Analysis approach. The issue focuses on both governments partnership published in the Jakarta Post during 2014-2018. Using Critical Discourse Analysis as an approach, this article analyses the media exclusion and inclusion strategies of social actors. By applying descriptive qualitative methods, result shows that the dominant strategy is the inclusion strategy. The use of inclusion strategy indicates specifications, individualization and categorization of positive reaction and support of The Jakarta Post towards the Indonesian government on trade and economic partnership between Indonesia and Australia. However, the use of exclusion strategy is aim to hide the social actors in the discourse and to divert reader's attention to the object rather than the subject discourse.
