The result shows that all types of Themes and Thematic Progressions are found in both writings. The Unmarked Topical Theme and Constant Theme Patterns are most frequently used. The conclusion is that Low Achiever's Descriptive Writings cannot be considered as a low-coherent text based on School's rubric only, Theme and Thematic Progression analysis is suggested to be conducted for extra observation and evaluation despite of the easy and common themes many constant types used to start the clauses in both of their writings. Keywords: descriptive text, low achiever's writings systemic functional linguistics, theme, and thematic progression

Abstract

Wonderful Indonesia is the trademark of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (Kementerian Pariwisata dan Ekonomi Kreatif or Kemenparekraf), responsible for producing videos aimed at promoting tourism to national and international tourists. Consequently, this study seeks to examine the representation of identity in the construction of Indonesian nature and culture. Based on this perspective, the selected video for analysis was Wonderful Indonesia Challenge: Borobudur, and the use of the multimodal discourse analysis showed that Indonesian nature and culture were constructed uniquely in this video. Additionally, the selected video represented nature in diverse tourist destinations as exotic, beautiful, friendly, comfortable, and pleasant. Traditional culture was also portrayed as preserved by the local community, even in daily activities. The glorification of locality was increasingly felt when tourists were proven to be actively engaged and happy. Simultaneously, local people in the video were shown to be passive but friendly. However, this video did not portray traditional culture as being close to tourists. The entire scenario was relatively open, enjoyable, and experienced, and even recorded by tourists, despite the sacred nature of the ritual performed. This condition gave the impression that Indonesian nature and culture were exotic, beautiful, unrestricted, comfortable, safe, and enjoyable.

Abstract

Clear pronunciation is a critical component of successful communication, essential for developing both speaking and listening skills. However, pronunciation challenges often arise due to differences between written and spoken forms of a language, as well as the influence of a speaker's native language. This study examines the production of English dental fricative consonant sounds by Sundanese students from English and non-English departments at Widyatama University, Indonesia. The study aims to identify common pronunciation errors and their causes, comparing students who have extensive English training with those who do not. A qualitative descriptive method was employed, supported by content analysis, to analyze the pronunciation of 10 students—five from each department. The findings reveal significant differences in pronunciation accuracy between the two groups, with English Department students generally performing better. Common errors include the substitution of dental fricatives with alveolar stops and labiodental fricatives with bilabial plosives. The primary causes of these errors are attributed to insufficient practice, lack of phonetic awareness, and interference from the native Sundanese language. This research highlights the need for targeted pronunciation training and increased phonetic awareness to improve English pronunciation skills among non-English majors.

This study conducts an in-depth analysis of the various topics presented on the account that showcase the multifaceted nature of Sundanese culinary traditions. The researchers collected culinary information from 642 posts on Instagram feeds, resulting in 118 data points considering various cuisines, both traditional and modern. The focus of this study is on 86 data points related to traditional meals and beverages in 2022. Employing van Dijks Critical Discourse Analysis within the micro-structure theory, the descriptive qualitative method was used for the analysis. The findings reveal four distinct classifications of topics related to culinary diversity. They are the diversity of traditional Sundanese meals (66 data), the diversity of traditional Sundanese beverages (2 data), restaurants offering traditional foods and beverages (16 data), and ingredients for traditional pastries (2 data). Additionally, the analysis uncovers the use of interrogative sentences, declarative sentences, and lexical choices that effectively support and describe the promotion of culinary diversity as a prominent tourist attraction in Bandung. Interrogative sentences engaged followers, declarative sentences provided factual insights, and diverse lexical choices enticed readers to appreciate Bandungs culinary offerings.

Abstract

Sayang Village in Jatinangor Subdistrict is one of the villages whose agricultural products produce tuber variants, one of which is sweet potato. The processing agricultural products into culinary products is one of the factors that can help improve the community's economy. In addition to processing ingredients into food variants that have been known, modification of these types of preparations is quite important to maintain the selling power of these products. This PPM activity aims to introduce modifications to the variation of processed sweet potatoes that have been carried out by the people in Japan as well as to introduce ways of food marketing. This activity is conducted through the method of observation in the field with the technique of tapping records and the method of plunging directly into the field through direct practice (education and socialization) of making food. The theory used to study this problem comes from Setiawan Sabana (2001). Conditions in the field show that the community, especially women, consisting of mothers and young children, shows a high interest in the creation of new foods and education on the marketing of these products.

Abstract

Entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) is quite essential for starting a business. Many MSIB participants are interning at companies, which concerns the UNPAD Career Development Center regarding students' ESE. The study was conducted using a survey method: distributing a Google Forms questionnaire to the interns. The online process was used considering the location of the participants, who were spread out because they were undergoing an internship. The survey results showed that most students had relatively high ESE scores. The analysis of the difference test showed no significant difference in the scientific cluster and parental background, but the Science and Technology and Agrocomplex clusters had the highest average interest. Students with parents who work as entrepreneurs also have a higher level of confidence than students with parents who work as civil servants or private employees, BUMN and BUMD. Students' interest in entrepreneurship and ESE also show a significant relationship so that self-confidence will impact their interest in entrepreneurship, and they are expected to survive and develop. Parents' jobs and asking students to influence students' confidence in entrepreneurship. In addition, the Science and Technology and Agrocomplex clusters showed higher self-confidence in entrepreneurship. This study suggests providing entrepreneurial containers/opportunities for students to improve their entrepreneurial skills. In addition, a mentoring program is also needed to help students survive in their businesses and develop them into bigger businesses.
