Abstract

This study aims to describe how the Middle East Media represent the Indonesian government and the executed Indonesian migrant workers in the case of Indonesian migrant workers’ executions in Saudi Arabia. The data are analyzed through Critical Discourse Analysis focuses on the representation of social actors by Van Leeuwen (2008). This theory examines how the social actors are presented or excluded in the representation. In addition, the analysis of this study is also supported by the lexical analysis based on Richardson’s theory (2007) of analyzing news text: level of analysis. This study uses descriptive analysis method since the data are analyzed based on the indicators, categories or strategies in the theories which are used to analyze the data. This study found that the Indonesian government is represented as the party who has done many efforts to save Indonesian migrant workers from the executions abroad but on the other side, Indonesian government is also represented as hypocritical party since Middle East Media nominate the Indonesian government as the party that still implement the death penalty. Generally, the lexical analysis show that the executed Indonesian migrant workers are represented as the cruel killers although several media present another information which show their reasons to do the crimes such as self-defense and suffering mental-illness.

The presence of heteroglossic as the most type indicates that the petitioners not only made themselves as references or data sources, but also they tried to add many references and other brackets as data and facts that strengthen their statements. In addition, the presence of 'pronounce' type as the most type in heteroglossic as contract shows that the petitioners made many straightforward and assertive statements. These statements are representative of the assured feeling of the petitioners after seeing the fact that the same-sex marriage was discriminated. The presence of 'entertain' type as the most type in heteroglossic as expand shows us that the petitioners support same-sex marriages so that their rights can be recognized in the United States. Abstract

Teacher as the main role in learning process tend to communicate with student directly in the classroom. The utterances are categorized as directive illocutionary acts. This can be analyzed by using a sociopragmatics approach. This descriptive research is titled “Directive Illocutionary Acts as Teaching Method Relating to Status Scale Dimension in Sociopragmatics Study”. The object of this research is utterances that contain directive illocutionary acts. The aim of this research is to describe and analyze types of directive illocutionary acts uttered by teachers in the classroom in relation to status scale dimension. The research method used in the research is descriptive.  The writer uses a theory about types of directive illocutionary acts proposed by Searle in Cutting (2002). This research also relates directive illocutionary acts with status scale dimension as proposed by Holmes (2002). Another supporting theory is context theory put forward by McManis, et al. (1987) and direct and indirect speech theory by Yule (1996). The result shows that teachers tend to use commanding, requesting, and forbidding directive illocutionary acts. The dominant status scale dimension is superior in a teacher-student relationship which shows that the teacher has power in the classroom. The contexts that influence the utterance are physical, linguistic, epistemic and social contexts.
