Abstract

The use of coal in power plant activities will produce solid waste in the form of fly ash and bottom ash. Alternative management to reduce the volume of ash waste is through utilization. Therefore, this study aims to determine the toxic characteristics of bottom ash fly ash waste, determine the physical properties of the compressive strength of paving blocks and bricks from the substitution of fly ash and bottom ash, as well as the most optimal proportion of substitution of the product based on the compressive strength parameter. Compatibility of Toxic Waste Characteristics is carried out through the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching Procedure (TCLP) test. Variation of optimal substitution for compressive strength is known through variations of fly ash and bottom ash substitution, for brick products which are 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, and for paving blocks which are 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%. Through the TCLP test, it is known that the waste is below the TCLP A and TCLP B quality standards so it can be categorized as non toxic and hazardous waste. The results of using fly ash and bottom ash in brick products meet the requirements for compressive strength according to SNI 03-0349-1989. The results of using fly ash and bottom ash in paving block products meet the requirements for compressive strength according to SNI 03-0691-1996. Abstract

Seaweed is a type of multicellular organism with fast growth. Seaweed is quite abundant and is in great demand in several fields, both industrial and pharmaceutical. There are 3 types of seaweed, including brown with polysaccharides such as alginate, fucoidan and laminarin. Green seaweed with polysaccharides such as ulvan. Red with polysaccharides such as agar and carrageenan. Carrageenan is a hydrocolloid of Kappaphycus alvarezii/Eucheuma cottonii which has been extracted with an alkaline solution or water. Carrageenan has the property of being able to form a stable gel, is edible, renewable and rich in fiber so it has the potential to be used as an edible film. Edible film is a layer that can be eaten and has a role as a barrier to moisture. Based on the literature, making edible film from seaweed carrageenan with a higher concentration of seaweed results in a decrease in the transmittance value and transparency level of the edible film. The addition of a higher concentration also produces edible film with a lower water content, namely 21.16%, and has a tendency for slower dissolution compared to lower seaweed concentrations. The higher the concentration of carrageenan used in making edible film, the higher its solubility, the stronger its tensile strength, the thicker and more resistant it is, and the lower the vapor transmission rate or the higher the ability to hold water. Keywords: Seaweed (Eucheuma cottonii), carrageenan, edible film

Abstract

Coal is one of the main fuel sources for electricity generation in Indonesia. Coal contains inherent moisture water content and chemical calorific value. The Inherent Moisture value in coal is one of the main characteristics of coal that determines the quality of the coal. The calorific value of coal was determined from the values of Total Moisture, Ash Content and Total Sulfur which are the determining parameters for coal quality. The aim of this research is to determine the correlation between the Inherent Moisture value and the Calorific Value of coal with ASTM standards. This research was conducted at PT Triyasa Pirsa Utama Samarinda using 10 different coal samples to analyze the Inherent Moisture value and Calorific Value. Based on the data from the analysis and graphs, a correlation between the Inherent Moisture (IM) and Calorific Value (CV) values is inversely proportional, where the higher the IM value, the lower the CV value in the coal sample. The factors that influence changes in IM and CV values are climate, weather, coal storage time and coal grain size degradation. Keywords: Coal, Moisture, Calorific Value, ASTM Standard.

Abstract

Preparation and characterization of Cu(II) ion selective electrode membranes based on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) using sodium sulfide (Na2S) as the ionophore has been done. The use of PVC polymer functions as a material that strengthens the properties of the membrane mixed with Na2S to form a homogeneous membrane and can reduce the risk of leaks in the membrane used. However, PVC has stiff properties, so a plasticizer in the form of DOP was needed to reduce intermolecular forces and make the membrane elastic. The preparation was carried out with the composition Na2S : PVC : DOP, namely 6 : 3 : 1. The membrane was doped with CuSO4 solution for 7 days and the Cu2+ ESI performance was measured to increase the optimal conductivity of the membrane, it is done by doping the membrane, namely by inserting 1 M Cu2+ dopant metal. The ESI Cu2+ performance results show a solution composition of 1:2 CuSO4:KNO3 and works well in the composition range 10-5 - 10-1 M, with a Nernst factor value of 28.9 mV/decade and a detection limit of 1.01×10-5 M. The response time of ESI Cu2+ was 10-60 seconds and can be used for 3 days. ESI Cu2+ works in the pH range 4-6 and the presence of interfering ions Cd2+, Zn2+, Cl-, NO3- and SO42- does not affect the performance of ESI Cu2+.
