Abstract

A study entitled Analysis of Ammonia Levels and Heavy Metals (Fe and Mn) in Domestic Wastewater has been conducted. This research aimed to determine the concentrations of ammonia and heavy metals (Fe and Mn) in domestic wastewater from the drainage channel on Jalan H. M. Ardans (AL 1) and the wastewater treatment plant of PT. LAB (AL 2). Ammonia levels were analyzed using the phenate spectrophotometric method, while heavy metal concentrations (Fe and Mn) were determined using the Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) method. Based on the analysis results, ammonia levels were found to be 0.45 mg/L in AL 1 and 0.08 mg/L in AL 2. The concentration of iron (Fe) was 3.17 mg/L in AL 1 and 0.50 mg/L in AL 2. The concentration of manganese (Mn) was 15.07 mg/L in AL 1 and 0.30 mg/L in AL 2. The ammonia levels in both AL 1 and AL 2 complied with the quality standard of 10 mg/L. The Fe concentrations in AL 1 and AL 2 also met the quality standard of 5 mg/L. The Mn level in AL 2 met the quality standard of 2 mg/L, whereas the Mn level in AL 1 exceeded the permissible limit. Abstract

Prakonsentrasi ion Cd(II) dalam sampel pupuk nitrogen, fosfor dan kalium (NPK) menggunakan alumina teraktivasi sebagai material pengisi kolom telah dilakukan. Alumina terlebih dahulu diaktivasi dengan NaOH pada pH 8 sebelum dimasukkan ke dalam kolom. Beberapa parameter penting dalam tahapan prakonsentrasi yang dapat meningkatkan kinerja analitik pengukuran telah ditentukan menggunakan instrumen spektrofotometer serapan atom (SSA). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan kondisi optimum tahapan prakonsentrasi ion Cd(II), adalah pada volume sampel 10 mL, volume HNO3 adalah 4 mL pada konsentrasi 0,5 M, dengan nilai kapasitas retensi adalah 1,4113 mg Cd(II)/g alumina. Kinerja analitik pengukuran metode sangat baik, ditunjukkan dengan nilai batas deteksi metode adalah 2,7997 μg/L. Presisi metode dinyatakan sebagai persentase koefisien variansi adalah 4,03%. Penggunaan alumina sebagai bahan pengisi kolom dapat meningkatkan signal sebesar 2,5 kali dibandingkan dengan pengukuran ion Cd(II) secara langsung. Akurasi metode ini sangat baik, dengan nilai persen perolehan kembali adalah 91,67 – 103,49%, menunjukkan bahwa matriks sampel tidak  mempengaruhi hasil pengukuran, sehingga metode ini dapat digunakan untuk analisis ion Cd(II) dalam sampel pupuk NPK. Estimasi ketidakpastian metode ini juga telah dihitung dan ditunjukkan dengan nilai persen ketidakpastian adalah 14,16%.Preconcentration of Cd(II) Ion in Nitrogen, Phosphor, and Kalium (NPK) Fertilizer Sample Using Activated Alumina as a Column Filler Material. The research about preconcentration of Cd(II) in NPK fertilizer using activated alumina as a column filler material was done. The column used a filler material of alumina previously activated using NaOH at pH 8. Some important parameters in the preconcentration stage are able to increase the analytical performance, determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). The result of the research shows the optimum condition of preconcentration stage Cd(II) ion are volume of the sample was 10 mL, the volume of eluent HNO3 was 4 mL with a concentration of 0.5 M, with the retention of capacity value was 1.4113 mg Cd(II)/g alumina. The analytical performance of this method is good, shown with the limit of detection value was 2.7997 μg/L. The precision of this method was indicated by the percentage of the coefficient variance of 4.03%. Alumina used as a filler column can increase the signal up to 2.5 times for direct Cd(II) ions measurement. The accuracy of this method is excellent, with the recovery percentage value was 91.67 – 103.49%, indicating that the matrices of NPK fertilizer give no effect on the results of measurements, and this method was capable of analyzing Cd(II) ions in NPK fertilizer. The uncertainty of this method was estimated as the percentage of the uncertainty of 14.16%.

Abstract

The determination of organic carbon (C-organic) content in soil is an important indicator for evaluating soil fertility and environmental quality. This study aims to validate the Walkley–Black method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry for the determination of C-organic content in oil palm plantation soil. The analysis was carried out through the oxidation of organic matter using K₂Cr₂O₇ under acidic conditions, and the reduction of Cr⁶⁺ to Cr³⁺ ions was measured at a wavelength of 587 nm. The validation parameters evaluated included linearity, accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). The calibration curve produced a linear regression equation of y = 0.0016x + 0.0044 with an R² value of 0.9967, indicating excellent linearity. The accuracy test resulted in an average recovery of 98.09%, which falls within the AOAC acceptance range (80–115%), while the precision test yielded an RSD value of 1.50%, showing high repeatability. The calculated LOD and LOQ values were 1.3669 ppm and 3.3407 ppm, respectively, indicating good sensitivity. Based on these results, the Walkley–Black method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry meets analytical validation criteria and is reliable and efficient for determining organic carbon content in oil palm plantation soil. Abstract

Preparation and characterization of Cd2+ ion selective electrode membrane using sodium sulfide (Na2S) as an ionophore has been conducted. This research aims to create and characterize Cd2+ ion selective electrode membrane as a chemical sensors. Membrane of ion selective electrode was made with the optimum composition with ratio of Na2S : PVC : DOP was 6 : 3 : 1. The membrane was doped using 1 M Cd2+ solution for 7 days, and characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy. FT-IR characterization used to determine the shift of wave number from absorption spectrum, the results showed the absorption 851 cm-1 wave lenght is Cd–S bond. ion selective electrode Cd2+-Na2S characterization show that ion selective electrode worked well with an internal solution composition 1:3 with the linear concentration range 1×10-4 - 1×10-1 M, with Nernst factor was 29.87 mV/decade and the limit of detection was 5.71×10-5 M as a Cd(CH3COO)2 concentration or equivalent to Cd2+ concentration of 0.6422 ppm. Ion selective electrode worked optimally in the pH range 4-6, with the response time was 10-60 seconds and can be used up to 5 days. The presence of interfere ions such as Cu2+, Zn2+, Cl-, NO3-, and SO42- didn’t affect the performance of ion selective electrode Cd2+-Na2S determining Cd2+ ions in the samples. Abstract

The increasing global production of plastics has caused serious environmental impacts due to their non-degradable nature. Therefore, eco-friendly packaging alternatives such as edible films (EF) based on natural biopolymers are needed. Glucomannan derived from porang tubers (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume), also known as Konjac Glucomannan (KGM), is one of the most promising biomaterials because it is biodegradable, non-toxic, and easily forms elastic films. The purpose of this review is to examine the potential of glucomannan as a base biomaterial for EF and the role of adding plant extracts as antibacterial and antioxidant agents. The review was conducted through an analysis of recent literature on the physical, chemical, and functional characteristics of KGM-based EF with the addition of natural bioactive compounds. The results show that the combination of glucomannan and plant extracts enhances the mechanical properties, water vapor resistance, and antibacterial activity of the film. In addition, the antioxidant activity increases with the incorporation of phenolic and flavonoid compounds, which effectively suppress oxidation and extend the shelf life of food products. Overall, KGM-based EF enriched with plant extracts has strong potential as an active and functional packaging material that supports sustainability and could replace conventional plastics in the future Keywords: glucomannan; tuber porang; edible film; antimicrobial; antioxidant.

Abstract

Edible packaging based on biopolymers offers an innovative solution to the problem of conventional plastic packaging waste that is difficult to degrade. Glucomannan from porang tuber (Amorphophallus muelleri Blume) is a natural biopolymer with great potential as a material for making edible packaging because it is biodegradable, safe, has good mechanical properties, and is sustainable. Glucomannan-based films can maintain the quality and extend the shelf life of food products. Further development is carried out through the integration of plant extracts containing anthocyanins as smart indicators to detect the freshness of food materials. Anthocyanins have high sensitivity to pH changes, allowing color changes in the packaging as the food quality degrades due to microbial activity. Thus, the combination of glucomannan and anthocyanins can produce smart edible packaging that is not only environmentally friendly but also capable of providing real-time visual information on the freshness of food products. Abstract

This study introduces optimized Ca-Alg-EDTA microcapsules specifically designed as a high-performance column filler for the preconcentration and sensitive detection of toxic Cr(VI) in aquatic systems. Monitoring Cr(VI) at trace levels is critical due to its high toxicity and environmental persistence. Unlike previous alginate-based sorbents, this work focuses on a synergistic EDTA integration within a column-switching framework to enhance retention efficiency (74.73 %) and capacity (0.3995 mg/g). Analytical validation using UV-Vis spectrophotometry demonstrated excellent linearity (R2 = 0.9995) with a low detection limit of 0.014 mg/L, ensuring reliability for samples with minimal analyte concentrations. The method’s robustness was confirmed through Mahakam River water analysis, yielding a 93.05 % recovery in compliance with AOAC 2002 standards. This optimized microencapsulation approach provides a cost-effective and sustainable solution for routine environmental monitoring of heavy metal contamination.

Abstract

Penelitian tentang validasi metode penentuan kadar benzena, toluena dan xilena pada sampel udara dan tanah dengan menggunakan kromatografi gas telah dilakukan. Untuk mendapatkan hasil pengukuran yang valid, beberapa parameter penting yang berpengaruh dalam validasi metode telah ditentukan. Beberapa parameter penting yang dilakukan adalah penentuan besaran dasar kromatografi yang meliputi: waktu retensi, kapasitas (k’), faktor selektivitas (α) dan kinerja analitik yang meliputi: penentuan linearitas (r), limit deteksi (LOD), limit kuantitasi (LOQ), presisi dan akurasi. Hasil penelitian penentuan kinerja analitik sangat baik ditunjukkan oleh nilai presisi sebagai % KV < 2/3 nilai KV Horwitz, LOD untuk masing-masing senyawa benzena, toluena dan xilena adalah 0,02 mg/L; 0,59 mg/L dan 0,08 mg/L serta LOQ untuk masing-masing senyawa benzena, toluena dan xilena adalah 0,07 mg/L; 1,99 mg/L dan 0,27 mg/L. Akurasi  metode ini sangat baik ditunjukkan dengan nilai presentase perolehan kembali masing-masing senyawa benzena, toluena dan xilena untuk sampel tanah sebesar 102,61 ± 4,61%; 101,65 ± 7,41%; 102,15 ± 4,15%, dan untuk sampel udara masing-masing senyawa sebesar 101,69 ± 5,77%; 102,08 ± 5,43% dan 98,55 ± 5,11%. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini, metode kromatografi gas dapat digunakan dalam penentuan benzena, toluena dan xilena pada sampel udara dan tanah dengan memberikan hasil yang valid.Validation Method on The Determination of Benzene, Toluene and Xylene in Air and Soil Samples Using Gas Chromatography. The present study investigated the method for the determination of the content of benzene, toluene, and xylene in air and soil samples using gas chromatography. To obtain a valid measurement result, several important parameters that influence the method validation have been determined. The several important parameters carried out are the determination of the basic chromatographic such as retention time, capacity factor (k'), selectivity (α) and analytical performance measurement includes: the determination of linearity (r), limit of detection (LOD), limit of quantitation (LOQ), precision and accuracy. The result of analytical performance of the research are well verified, in which the value of precision was % CV < 2/3 CV Horwitz value, LOD for benzene, toluene, and xylene compound were 0.02 mg/L, 0.59 mg/L, 0.08 mg/L, respectively, and LOQ for benzene, toluene and xylene compounds was 0.07 mg/L, 1.99 mg/L and 0.27 mg/L respectively. This method achieved high accuration, indicated by a percentage of recovery value of benzene, toluene, and xylene for soil samples of 102.61 ± 4.61%; 101.65 ± 7.41%; 102.15 ± 4.15%, and for air samples was 101.69 ± 5.77%, 102.08 ± 5.43%, and 98.55 ± 5.11% respectively. Based on the results of this research, the method presented in this study can be applied for the determination of benzene, toluene, and xylene using gas chromatography in air and soil samples with valid results.
