Abstract

The horticultural sector is growing and the need for its products is also increasing, including the need for green beans, but its availability is limited by land conditions that are poor in organic matter, so it needs to be treated with the addition of organic fertilizers such as vermicompost. This study aims to determine the effect of vermicompost and obtain the best dose for the growth and production of mung bean (Vigna radiata L.). The study was conducted using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of a single factor, namely the provision of vermicompost. From these factors, there were four levels of treatment (0, 5, 15, and 25 tons ha-1) and each treatment was given three replications so that there were 12 experimental units. The parameters reviewed were plant height, total productive branches, flower age, harvest age, total pods planted, percentage of pithy pods, weight of planted seeds, weight of seeds per plot, and weight of 100 seeds. The dose of vermicompost 25 ton.ha-1 was better than the dose of 0 ton.ha-1, the dose of 5 ton.ha-1, and the dose of 15 tons/ha. The treatment can increase plant height, total productive branches, total pods planted, percentage of pithy pods, weight of seeds planted, weight of seeds per plot, and weight of 100 seeds.

Abstract

Gold snail (Pomacea canaliculata L.) is the main pest of rice plants in Empat Balai Village, Kuok District, Kampar Regency. Farmers in Empat Balai Village experience gold snail infestation every year, which has an impact on production. The purpose of community service activities is to conduct community service by counseling and controlling carp pests in rice fields by utilizing local wisdom in Empat Balai Village. The methods in this service are survey, consolidation, counseling and field practice. The counseling was held at Mushallah Miftahul Jannah in Pulau Empat Hamlet, while the field practice was at the farmer’s house and rice fields in Empat Balai Village. The material provided was about bioecology and how to control the carp snail pest. It was emphasized that the recommended control carp pests are the management of carp pests in the egg phase, because one group of eggs has 500 eggs and control is easier in the egg phase. Control in the egg phase includes making drainage or small ditches, installing bamboo stakes so that the snails lay their eggs there, and collecting the eggs once a week. In the snail phase, involves setting up attractant plant traps (gadung tuber leaf, papaya leaf, and banana leaf), kalambuai traps (kaltrap), installing of irrigated nets, utilizing ducks, and vegetable molluscicides. In addition, preventive measure was taken, such as planting older seedlings. The farmers were very enthusiastic about this activity. As a result, farmers gained additional knowledge about gold snail pests and how to control them, improve farmers skills on gold snail pests control methods by utilizing local wisdom.

Abstract

Oil palm is a plantation commodity that plays a strategic role in the economic development of Kampar Regency. Sungai Pagar Sub-district, located in Kampar Kiri Hilir District, Kampar Regency, Riau Province, is an area where the majority of the population works as oil palm farmers. Cultivation activities in managing oil palm plantations are accompanied by an abundance of palm oil waste, particularly Empty Fruit Bunches (EFB). This waste is often considered an environmental problem due to its large volume and potential for pollution. Therefore, it needs to be processed into beneficial products such as organic fertiliser to support sustainable agriculture. This programme aimed to provide education and training on the production of vermicompost, thereby increasing public knowledge on managing oil palm EFB waste in an environmentally friendly and economically valuable way. The implementation methods included dissemination of information on vermicomposting, technical training and mentoring, and evaluation through pre- and post-tests. The training involved 25 participants. The results of the community engagement activity demonstrated a significant increase in participants’ knowledge regarding the use of palm fronds. Evaluation showed a notable improvement in understanding, application, and programme impact, with scores rising from an average of 38.96% in the pre-test to 100% in the post-test. Overall, this activity enhanced the awareness of Kampung Sialang Sakti residents regarding the transformation of EFB waste into vermicompost by 62.04%, from 38.96% to 100%.
