Abstract

Abstract: This study investigated students’ perceptions of integrating local wisdom into English language skills courses, focusing on its impact on engagement, understanding, and learning experience. The research employed a survey design, collecting data through closed-ended questionnaire with insights from open-ended responses. The participants were pre-service teachers, students enrolled in the English Education Study Program. Descriptive statistics, including means, standard deviations, and frequencies, were used to summarize the responses for each section of the questionnaire in the data analysis. The questionnaire results revealed that students felt more motivated and reported a deeper comprehension of the cultural and social nuances within language use when local wisdom was incorporated into the curriculum.. Qualitative responses highlighted the significance of three main areas: relevant course materials, instructional expertise, and diverse pedagogical approaches. The study recommends ongoing curriculum adaptation to ensure a meaningful, effective blend of language and local cultural knowledge

Abstract

This qualitative study investigates the motivations of parents choosing English language education for their children at SMP Alam Lubuklinggau, a school increasingly integrating English into its curriculum. Focusing on 34 independent parents, who enrolled their children without expecting tangible incentives such as tuition fee reductions or housing provisions, the study explores the rationale behind these educational choices. Data were gathered through a combination of observations and one-to-one semi-standardized interviews, offering in-depth insights into parental perspectives. Thematic analysis was employed to interpret the findings, highlighting the parents’ emphasis on language acquisition, particularly in enhancing their children's English proficiency. The results demonstrate that parents predominantly view the enrollment at SMP Alam Lubuklinggau as an investment in their children's future language skills. This investment decision was found to be significantly influenced by the parents' unique characteristics, social roles, affiliations, and financial standing. The study concludes that the primary driving force behind these educational decisions is the desire to equip children with essential language skills in an increasingly globalized world, rather than short-term benefits or financial incentives

Abstract

Developing Higher-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and effective information transfer is crucial for nursing students, impacting their academic and professional competence. This study aims to identify the gaps in English reading materials used by nursing students at a Health Polytechnic, assessing their adequacy in supporting these critical cognitive skills. The research focused on 79 second-semester nursing students during the 2022/2023 academic year and employed a 25-item questionnaire to analyze target situations, deficiencies, current situations, and strategies. The results reveal that existing general English coursebooks need to meet the specialized needs of nursing education. Notably, these materials lack content that promotes HOTS and aids in information transfer, essential elements for nurturing the cognitive and professional skills required in nursing. The study underscores a significant need for more appropriate materials that support HOTS, highlighting the need for strategically revised material development. It is recommended that custom English reading materials integrating HOTS and effective information transfer techniques be developed to enhance comprehension and relevance in the nursing curriculum, thereby better preparing nursing students for their future roles.

Abstract

Addressing Indonesia's vulnerability to climate-related disasters, this study explores the development of English reading materials on climate change for secondary high school students. The goal is to tailor these materials to the students' specific needs, considering their English proficiency levels and the challenges they face in reading comprehension. Through a mixed-method approach involving questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, the study captures insights from students, English teachers, and stakeholders. The findings highlight the critical role of English in students' future careers. However, most students are beginners in English, and they experience significant difficulties in understanding reading materials. There is a clear need for descriptive texts that are accessible at their English level and integrate climate change topics relevant to their context. The study identifies a gap in current educational resources, emphasizing the necessity of incorporating climate change content in a manner that both informs and is comprehensible to students. In conclusion, this study advocates for the creation of supplementary descriptive texts about climate change, customized to align with the students' linguistic abilities and educational curriculum. This initiative aims not only to enhance students' English skills but also to increase their awareness and understanding of crucial environmental issues.

The analysis revealed that English teachers demonstrate commendable digital competence, predominantly classified as "Integrators" in five of the six DigCompEdu domains, and as "Experts" in the Empowering Learners domain. More experienced teachers showcase superior skills in personalizing learning and utilizing diverse digital tools like WhatsApp, Google Forms, Canva, and TikTok. Conversely, less experienced teachers primarily rely on conventional tools, highlighting the need for effective mentorship and structured guidance. The findings have significant implications for school leaders, policymakers, and teacher education institutions, advocating for mentorship systems, enhanced professional development programs that integrate pedagogical strategies, and practical training in adaptive digital resource development. Ultimately, this study emphasizes the necessity of ongoing support to foster sustainable digital competence in educators, contributing to the global discourse on digital pedagogy in 21st-century education.
