Abstract

Due to the rapid development and dynamics of education, parents are becoming increasingly focused and concerned about their children’s education. Parents have a significant influence on students’ academic performance (AP) based on various perspectives, one of which is socio-economic status (SES). A systematic literature review is required to provide an overview for educators and policy makers in Indonesia to address problems that arise in students’ AP due to SES factors. However, there are limited research studies that systematically review the literature on SES in regards to students’ AP. This study was guided by the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) review protocol employing two databases: Scopus and Google Scholar, regarding students’ SES and student AP. There were 316 articles were screened and 51 articles that met the predetermined criteria were obtained. This study performed content analysis to codify, organize categories, and develop themes. Based on the thematic analysis, this study grouped three main themes: SES based on student roles, SES based on teacher roles, and SES based on family roles. This review contributes to the existing literature by providing direction for further research and as a catalyst for developing new literacy related to SES in education.

Abstract

Metaverse—an incredible medium that combines features of virtual reality platforms such as online games, social media, and the Internet—is predicted to bring significant changes to human behavior. It is believed that social interaction and the quality of mental health can be at risk once Metaverse becomes more prevalent with adolescents predicted to be the most vulnerable group. This study intends to prove this prediction by examining the effect of online game addiction and social media addiction on the mental health quality of adolescents as the majority group with Metaverse access. This correlational study involved 700 students from 14 schools in the greater Malang area. Data were collected through the Metaverse Impact Instrument (MII) and analyzed partially using the T-test and simultaneously using the F-test to know the contribution of gender using an independent sample T-test. Previously, the assumptions of multicollinearity and heteroscedasticity assumption were also tested. The results indicate that online games and social media negatively affect mental health at a rate of 31.5%. These results provide empirical evidence for theoretical predictions regarding the impact of Metaverse on mental health quality in adolescents. As a follow-up, research is needed to develop educational intervention strategies, appropriate guidance, and counseling services that purpose is to: 1) integrate cultural and religious values into character education; 2) anticipate the potential risks of metaverse among adolescents.

Abstract

The successful transition process in early childhood led to future school outcomes. The aim of the research was to explore the experiences of parents of children with special needs in transitioning their children to school. The study used a qualitative approach involving 17 parents of young children with special needs receiving education in special schools in Yogyakarta. Focus group discussion was used to collect the data. Data collected from Focus Group Discussion was analysed using thematic analysis. Findings from the study show that parents of children with mild special needs do not have specific preparation in transitioning their children to school, school provided a week at the beginning of the school period for parents to stay and assist their children in the classes. Parents believe that there is no adequate support for transitioning their children to school and that condition exaggerates their anxieties when leaving their children at school. A structured transition program is needed as the implication of this study.

Abstract

This study aims to examine bullying tendencies among students in Indonesia. A sample of 689 male and female students was selected using a simple random sampling technique. Data were collected through the Bullying Behavior Tendency Scale (BBTS), which consisted of 45 questions using a Likert scale, and were analyzed descriptively. The results showed that the bullying tendencies were in a low category. However, it was discovered that 32.08, 4.06, and 0.87% of students were in the moderate, high, and very high categories, respectively. Additionally, it was observed that there are significant differences in bullying behavior between male and female students. These results provide a basis for understanding the role of school counseling services in reducing bullying behavior which is prevalent and can cause trauma. Therefore, it is essential to implement preventive programs to address the tendencies of some students engaging in this act at school.

Abstract

The meaning in life is a fundamental human behavior that plays an essential role in self-development. The concept of meaning in life continues to focus on researchers using various theoretical perspectives. This study explored the construct of meaning in life from the vantage point of undergraduate students in their final year. They were chosen by considering the severity of the developmental tasks that must be completed during this time. By using the mixed-method approach, the study found the concept of meaning in life through the qualitative method. Some themes were related to the meaning of life, namely: experiencing a number of important events, being devoted to religion, learning from life, feeling positive emotions, benefiting others, interacting socially, and caring for oneself. The study was followed by a quantitative method through exploratory factor analysis and found that the construct of the meaning in life consisted of three factors, namely: facing difficult and severe situations, getting lessons from unpleasant situations, and thinking flexibly when dealing with various situations. This measurement model could be used in the development of meaning in life theory. Practically, it becomes the reference in solving the life problems.

Abstract

Group guidance services play a crucial role in developing students' potential, but their implementation often fails to conform to established standards. This study aims to evaluate the gap between the standards and actual practices of group guidance services in private junior high schools in Yogyakarta City. Using a mixed-methods approach with a discrepancy model, the study involved ten BK teachers who were selected through purposive sampling techniques. Data were collected through evaluation questionnaires and in-depth interviews, and then analyzed using descriptive statistics and content analysis. The results showed that most BK teachers did not regularly carry out services and that these services were not based on a systematic needs assessment. Key findings suggest that structural barriers such as administrative burdens and the absence of schedules remain key factors. Recommendations include the need for needs assessment training, innovative service strategies, and the regular inclusion of special hours for BK services in the school curriculum. Keywords: discrepancy model, guidance and counseling teacher, group guidance service
