Abstract

Globalization and technological developments are challenges in maintaining local wisdom and religious values. This study aims to explore the potential of Javanese community wisdom values, namely Memayu Hayuning Bawana (MHB) as a solution to increasing family resilience. In addition, MHB is also studied for its relevance to Islamic religious values through Al-Ghazali's perspective. The research method used is a mixed method with a Qual-quan sequential exploratory design. Quantitative analysis was conducted to determine the profile of family resilience, while qualitative analysis was used to examine the potential of MHB values as a solution to increasing family resilience and its relationship to Al-Ghazali's views. The study was conducted in Java, Indonesia, with 150 couples as participants. The results of the study found that the family resilience of Javanese society was 36.00% at a low level, 60.33% were in the medium category, and 3.67% were in the high category. In addition, the MBH values that can be used as a solution to increase family resilience are respecting each other's partners (Tepa Selira), pleasing the feelings of the partner (Karyenak tyasing sesama), being sincere in establishing a relationship (Sepi ing Pamrih, lan Rame ing Gawe), and being careful in acting (Eling lan Waspada). These values are in accordance with Al-Ghazali's perspective on the criteria for the nature of a partner. The characteristics of Al-Annanah, Al-Mananah, Al-Haddaqah, Al-Syaddaqah, Al-Barraqah, and Al-Hananah need to be avoided and are contrary to the MBH values and Al-Ghazali's perspective. Thus, the value of maintaining MBH can create a family that is orderly (tata), calm (titi), and peaceful (tentrem) or in Islamic literature it is called sakinah, mawadah, warahmah.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of inner peace on the dynamics of conflict experienced by university students, including both intrapersonal and interpersonal conflicts. The research employed a quantitative approach with a non-experimental correlational design. A total of 82 students participated, selected through purposive sampling, consisting of 35 students residing in Islamic boarding schools and 47 non-resident students. The Inner Peace Scale, covering the aspects of acceptance of loss, inner balance and calmness, and transcending hedonism and materialism, was tested on 438 students and produced 19 valid items based on Pearson correlation validity and a Cronbach’s Alpha reliability score of 0.764. The Decisional Conflict Scale (DCS), tested on 35 students, resulted in 15 valid items with a reliability of 0.914. The Interpersonal Conflict Scale, adapted from the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode, yielded 29 valid items with a reliability of 0.932. Normality testing using the Shapiro-Wilk test confirmed normal data distribution. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that inner balance and calmness had a significant positive correlation with intrapersonal conflict (r = 0.437; p = 0.009), while acceptance of loss had a significant negative correlation with interpersonal conflict (r = -0.433; p = 0.009). The regression analysis showed that the model significantly explained intrapersonal conflict (R² = 0.361, p < 0.001), with two dimensions of inner peace having significant effects: inner balance and calmness (β = 0.665, p < 0.001) and transcending hedonism and materialism (β = -0.489, p = 0.002). For interpersonal conflict, only the acceptance of loss dimension showed a significant negative effect (β = -0.364, p = 0.033). These findings suggest an opportunity to reinforce empathic and transformative communication approaches, emphasizing both conflict resolution and the personal transformation of those involved in the conflict.

Abstract

This study aims to explore in depth the role of moral critical thinking in facing contemporary challenges in da'wah, particularly in the context of spiritual counselling. Using a qualitative approach, this study examined the subjective experiences of da'wah practitioners, spiritual counsellors and religious leaders through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions and document analysis. Through thematic analysis, the study sought to identify major emergent  themes related to the application of moral critical thinking in da'wah practice. The primary goal of this study is to emphasise the importance of moral critical thinking in ensuring that da'wah remains an effective tool for social transformation in the modern era, particularly in the face of challenges such as globalisation, pluralism, and rapid technological development. The findings highlight the significance of moral critical thinking in tackling modern issues in da'wah from a spiritual counselling approach. Through in-depth analysis of data collected from interviews, focus group discussions, and document analysis, several key themes emerged, highlighting the need for da'wah practitioners to develop critical thinking skills in navigating the complexities of the digital age, addressing social injustices, and fostering peace and resilience. By integrating moral critical thinking with spiritual counselling, da'wah practitioners can effectively address contemporary challenges, promote ethical engagement, and make meaningful contributions to the spiritual and social well-being of individuals and communities.

Abstract

The global teacher shortage crisis, marked by high attrition rates within the first five years of service, highlights the importance of fostering flourishing in teacher professional education. This study aims to examine how the PERMA dimensions of flourishing are manifested among Indonesian teacher education students to generate culturally responsive and contextually grounded insights that support teacher readiness and retention. Using a sequential explanatory mixed-methods design, data were collected from 312 students across faculties and semesters. Phase 1 employed MANOVA to examine demographic variations in PERMA scores using validated instruments. Phase 2 involved thematic analysis of 24 in-depth interviews to explore students’ lived experiences of flourishing. Joint displays and meta-inferences were used to integrate quantitative and qualitative findings. Results showed no significant demographic differences in PERMA scores, challenging assumptions about variation based on gender, faculty, or semester. However, qualitative findings revealed culturally nuanced expressions of flourishing, including collective emotional experiences, relational engagement, service-oriented meaning-making, and communal celebration of individual success. These insights suggest that while the PERMA framework remains structurally relevant, its expression in collectivist cultures like Indonesia reflects unique cultural pathways. This study contributes to the global discourse on positive psychology by highlighting the need for culturally grounded applications of flourishing. The findings offer a foundation for developing teacher education programs that are both evidence-based and culturally responsive, enhancing well-being and long-term commitment among future educators.

Abstract

Adolescent mental health has become an increasingly urgent global concern, with schools recognised as strategic settings for mental health promotion, prevention, and early intervention. Over the past two decades, a wide range of school-based mental health initiatives have been developed, including mental health literacy programs, universal preventive interventions, teacher capacity-building, and whole-school approaches. However, existing evidence suggests that many initiatives remain fragmented and primarily focused on short-term outcomes. This article aims to synthesise international literature on school-based mental health initiatives in order to identify dominant trends, methodological limitations, and directions for sustainable development. A narrative thematic literature review was conducted using peer-reviewed studies published between 2004 and 2025 that examined mental health programs, frameworks, and assessment practices within school settings. The findings indicate that mental health literacy and universal preventive programs consistently improve students’ knowledge, attitudes, coping skills, and perceived readiness to seek help, while teacher-focused training enhances educators’ confidence and preparedness to support student mental health. Nevertheless, evidence of sustained behavioural change, system-level integration, and long-term effectiveness remains limited. In addition, considerable heterogeneity in assessment tools constrains comparability across studies and weakens cumulative evidence building. This review concludes that advancing sustainable school mental health systems requires integrated whole-school and multi-tiered approaches, strengthened teacher capacity embedded within supportive school structures, and the use of standardised, culturally adaptable assessment strategies.
